Shout out to the USA for pissing Canadians off so bad it flipped an entire election that was supposed to be a landslide for the center-right, forever in your debt o7

Shout out to the USA for pissing Australians off so bad it flipped an entire election that was supposed to be a landslide for the center-right, forever in your debt o7

For context, as of writing with ~70% of votes counted and 12/150 seats still not called, Labor has already delivered a LANDSLIDE victory even bigger than Canada’s.

The ALP currently holds 88 seats, which amounts to a 58% share of the parliament, up from 77 the last election.

Also, obligatory Destiel:

Next week I’ll start grimly accepting that a majority government isn’t an ideal outcome and a larger Green and leftie Independent presence would’ve been much better but for now let’s point and laugh at the right wing coalition pratfalling down the stairs because honestly this went a lot better than I expected it to.

Eat shit cunts. We’re a centre left country for now. By like, a ridiculous margin.

Knowing they’ll squander that mandate and still smooch around centre right and right wing policies is a heartbreaker

Yeah but we can celebrate for a week or so first. We avoided the worst possible outcome which seemed inevitable awhile ago. We did good. Then we can look at what we’ve got and get back to work trying to stop this party from turning us into America, But Much More Slowly And With Better PR.

Absolutely, the worst excesses of the coalition have been avoided and their leader dumped out by his electorate totally worth celebrating. Also nice to see the electoral process more or less tick along and work, conceding defeat wishing luck and not trying to implement some kind of coup.

There’s a guy in my local community Facebook group insisting on a recount and saying it’s sooo suspicious that they use pencil and not pen for the votes (we have always used pencil, this is normal) and about how pens are banned and they want it in pencil so they can edit your vote (this is not true; you can bring a pen to vote if you wish, the booths provide pencils because they’re cheaper and less prone to failure when you’re pumping a line of voters through the booth as efficiently as possible) and how these results must be fake (even though pencils are commonly used for Australian elections)

Which is expecting a lot of high level secrecy and truly astounding levels of coordination from the AEC to cheat for the most milquetoast party on the ballot, honestly. If I was in an organisation that could steal an election that smoothly and flawlessly I would’ve at least expected us to go for the Greens.

Someone should put the screws on him to sign up with the AEC for the next election I imagine it’ll crush any sense of grand conspiracy when he’s under pressure and hand counting and stacking senate ballot papers
