happy st. patrick’s day, here’s a reminder that the english invaded and colonized our country, attempted genocide, when that didnt work punished us for speaking our own language and enjoying our culture to the point where precious few even speak Gaeilge as a primary language, brutally crushed those who attempted to rebel, ignited a civil war intentionally so they could keep the north, fanned the flames of the Troubles, allowed prisoners to starve to death on hunger strike to send a message, treated us like 2nd class citizens in both our own country and in the UK for years, CONTINUE to fuck over the north, and now attempt to profit off our national holiday by getting really drunk even though the alcohol issues that my country is famous for are due to the above reasons. have a good one
I made this post in 2017. I feel it’s important to re-add the fact that all this happening to the irish does not make reverse racism real. white people are not oppressed. who do you think did all this to the irish? white british people. and the irish ended up using racism to their advantage particularly in the US to claim whiteness for ourselves. ireland is a deeply racist country today. our colonisation and genocide does not excuse our and our diaspora’s treatment of people of colour.
instead of leaving stupid comments on this post, please donate to the choctaw nation, especially if you are a white american claiming any irish heritage. if you’re in ireland, petition for an end to direct provision, as well as finding out what you can about asylum seekers rights groups in our country (I am most familiar with MASI, but there are plenty within easily googleable reach.) and listen to and support people of colour when they talk about the racism they experience, instead of using the irish as justification for your victim complex. any irish person that encourages that is just a racist using our history of violence, genocide and displacement as their weapon.
