The old CYC artificial intelligence engine used that example as one of many sample test cases used to debug the thing. Another was, “I saw the mountains flying over the ocean”.

Shit, CYC still exists!

It was memorable (to me) because unlike LLM AI, it relies on millions of human-defined rules as its knowledge base. Thus it took literal decades to train but theoretically doesn’t hallucinate like LLMs do.

I thought they’d abandoned the project. Wow.

Good Old-Fashioned AI as it was termed; it never worked but it was a tempting concept.
