Back when they were starting to dabble in direct to DVD animation, DC put a movie Superman: Doomsday. In order to establish quickly what kind of people both Superman and Lex Luthor are, they did two scenes back to back:
Superman lamenting his efforts to find a cure for AIDS have failed.
Lex Luthor casually developing a one-use instant for muscular dystrophy and then ordering his research department to turn it into an expensive, lifelong treatment, so he can gouge as much money as possible out of people.
They actually felt having Luthor do this with HIV or AIDS would be too cartoonishly evil. And yet here we are
