So. At least two of these are federal holidays BY LAW:

MLK Day: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/STATUTE-97/pdf/STATUTE-97-Pg917.pdf

Juneteenth Day:

HOWEVER. What that actually MEANS is that federal government employees get that day, or a makeup day, off.

It does NOT mean that the federal government is required to hold any kind of celebration for said holiday:

So what this appears to be to me, is an attempt to kill off the meaning behind these holidays; later they can change the law without much pushback.

However.

I would give it at least a week before you panic or fall into hopelessness, because:

  1. THIS IS STILL BREAKING NEWS AS OF TODAY, 30 JANUARY 2025. Nobody has had time to react to this properly; effective organization takes TIME.
  2. Many organizations are pushing back against Trump’s executive orders and keeping them tied up in the courts. I’m sure someone will pick this one up as well.
  3. You can still celebrate these holidays in your personal life, and in fact you should! DON’T OBEY IN ADVANCE
  4. This executive order doesn’t impact STATE government entities, since celebration of the holiday would be up to the laws governing their state. However, I would not be surprised if some states follow suit, and cancel celebrations where allowed by the laws of their state. So see what your laws are in your state, and see if you can support or attend a celebration from your state!
