If a company writes off a product for a tax break it should be public domain. Made a movie but wrote it off? Then the whole public, who is subsidizing your taxes, should get a free public domain copy.
That distopian company that made bionic eyes that shut down leaving blind patients with useless tech and brain implants should have at least be given the programming so a community could form to keep it going. Protecting the code serves only to give the current owner an opportunity to profit from it if they wanted to (they said they don’t) and to keeps the victims with unsupported brain modifications.
Discontinued products should have their designs published for repair or modification purposes.
