fuckin wild that the government has straight up blocked internet porn in florida unless you submit your government ID and NOBODY’S talking about it
Whoever stores that info is gonna get hacked and it’s going to ruin people. I give it less than a year.
This is part of why a bunch of porn sites (like pornhub) are just blocking Florida instead of having to deal with this shit: if they had to store a bunch of data, they would get hackers trying to hack them to steal it. They don’t want to deal with that shit!
For the record, this was the goal of those laws. Not to “protect children from seeing adult materials”. The legislators who wrote those laws knew full well that the requirements to access and store that information are too dangerous for most sites to bother implementing, so they’d just sooner block IPs from that state. It’s a de facto porn ban, because the right has been trying to ban porn for years and can’t due to the First Amendment.
This is a bad thing, even if the porn industry at large is a shitty industry that’s awful to its workers. It impacts independent sex workers as well and sets a bad precedent that the government can just censor whatever the hell it wants as long as it technically allows it but makes accessing it a big enough of a pain in the ass that the people hosting it just give up and quit.
How is this legal? The US is clearly not a liberal democracy and the fact that these laws haven’t been struck down by the supreme court a long time ago is definitive and undeniable proof.
This is beyond hypocrisy.
