“listen to such-and-such voices” is a requisite first-step in understanding any situation, of course–find out, before anything else, what some of the people who are directly affected have to say. unfortunately after that you still have to actually make up your mind on the issue because the such-and-such voices will in 100% of cases say different and contradicting things. however there’s a quick fix: if you just want to validate your own preexisting perspectives and feel like a good person in the process you can find someone who agrees with the thing you already think is true, stop there, and then yell at everyone else that they’re not centering lived experience

this lets you feel smug and superior about the correctness and righteousness of your viewpoint without any of the scary intellectual honesty of having to own it
