I fundamentally just don’t think that there are any circumstances under which making a copy of digital data can be accurately described as “theft” (yeah not even the one you’re thinking of) and this is linguistic ground that should have never been ceded and ceding it has only ever led to bad things πŸ‘

When you “steal” a digital file, it’s like stealing a book. Except instead of taking the whole book, you copy down the contents into your own blank book. The original still exists.

That is in no way stealing. That is copying. Maybe it’s unauthorized copying, maybe that book owner wanted to sell you their own copy of that book, so maybe they missed out on money… But that’s a problem with their business model (they’re selling something that can be copied for free), not a problem with you taking something from them. They lost nothing but an opportunity for profit that you were probably never going to make them.

It’s absolutely not stealing.
