Excuse the state of my microwave but here’s my $30, 20-year-old microwave from college (which still works fine!)
I use 5 of these buttons. 10sec, +1min/start, pause/cancel, and then RARELY, popcorn or defrost and honestly if I had neither it would be fine. I could cook popcorn with my air popper or just cook it by listening to the popping interval if it was a bag, and I usually thaw stuff in the sink or fridge. I could see leaving power level on there for fussy people, but I can’t recall a time I’ve ever used it for any reason. The rest are definitely superfluous.

I appreciate the defrost/power level bc it makes it easy to soften butter/warms precooked sandwiches better and more evenly.
I like my devices as stupid as possible. This thing is made to heat up food, it doesn’t need to be able to tell what time it is. It should have zero insights into anything outside of its shelf. It cannot communicate with any other device to learn more. My microwave is in the garden of eden and it has no idea where the apple tree is. Let it think the time is 2:68.
