So a big debate happening over on Mastodon and the fediverse as a whole is whether or not to federate with Threads – that is, whether or not to make it possible for people on Threads to see your posts, and to follow people on Threads. Some servers have decided no, they will not let Meta see their posts, out of fear this is an “embrace, expand, extinguish” plan on the part of Meta, and also out of the fear that this will allow Meta to scrape their posts for data, advertising, AI, etc.

However, this choice is being made on the server scale; this means some folks have had to move servers when an artist they liked joined Threads, and the only way to follow them was to be on a server that did not cut ties with Threads. One of my favorite servers, CortextImplant, cut ties. The biggest server, Mastodon.Social, did not.

And WAFRN, bless its heart, is doing one better: it’s giving the control to the users. This, I think, is the ideal solution.

A screenshot with a checkbox that reads "Enable federation with Threads (meta/facebook). Threads is a platform created by meta (formerly facebook). We understand both the fact that you might want to federate with them, and also that you may not. Hence why, unlike in other places, this kind of decisions are for you to make. By default meta will not see you unless you mark this option in your profile."ALT

Just click a checkbox, and you’re in. By default, you’re not. It’s the absolute best solution I’ve seen out there, and Mastodon/Akkoma/Calckey should take notes.
