You used to have to do this to get FEMA funds as well, but those requirements have changed, so now they’ll cover repairs/replacements even if things are already damaged! FEMA funds can be applied if your insurance does not cover everything AND can be used to distaster-proof your home once you return. The application is much easier to fill out and to get approved now.
