If he gets assassinated, you’ll stop him this election, but that’s what’ll happen, and it’ll extend his power beyond the grave. Right now, I’m fully convinced that he’s destroying the American conservative movement as we know it through the sheer power of his inability to care about anything that’s irrelevant to him. This man will say or do anything if it gets people to clap and cheer, and as he’s currently the strongest bastion of conservative thought, that means that he’s the ideological standards-bearer.
Except that Donald Trump doesn’t have an ideology. I’m fully convinced the man doesn’t actually believe in anything but his own glorification and not going to prison, and that he will say and do anything to facilitate that. Alive, Trump demonstrates that so frequently and so blatantly that by lifting him up, conservatives only hurt themselves. Alive, Trump goes into debates and gets stuck in a pissing contest about how big his crowds are and says batshit stuff about post-natal abortions.
Dead, he can say anything that they want. Dead, he can fully believe in their cause. Did he? No. Not at all. But that doesn’t matter.
If Trump gets assassinated, I figure in most cases, it’ll stop him from winning this election, but the movement he created will only become stronger.
If Trump loses the election, he’ll likely end up actually facing legal consequences from what he’s done, be financially ruined, and claim it’s all a conspiracy as his brand, his company and his wealth, everything that matters, crumble around him. Some people will believe him, demand this injustice be righted, blah blah blah, but the further away from his political relevance we get, the less people will care.
Meanwhile, without his cult of personality, what is there that conservative Americans still stand for? Anti-abortion? They killed Roe v. Wade like they’d been promising for years, and delivering on that promise actively weakened them. Family values? They’re currently dealing with a crisis because Trump and one of his greatest sycophants are acting like they’re fucking behind the scenes. About the only thing they have left is guns, and that’s a really weak position to stand on after two different pro-gun people have tried to assassinate your ex-president and in a country where according to Pew Research, 61 percent of Americans believe it’s too easy to get a gun. All they have is racist and transphobic fearmongering at this point, and that has a limited lifespan given that more and more are meeting people who are in the vulnerable groups that they’re targeting and those kinds of relationships are great at inoculating people against that fear. After all, if your buddy Marnie is trans, you’re not thinking of some nebulous hypothetical horror when they talk about trans people. You’re thinking of her.
If Donald Trump gets assassinated, his cult of personality does not die with him. It just becomes more flexible. And that cult of personality is more dangerous than Trump himself. Trump didn’t write Project 2025, after all. But it absolutely exists because of that cult of personality.
So please stop trying to kill this man. Alive, he’s a liability to conservative thought. Dead, he’s an asset. Let him get absolutely humiliated. That’ll not only be the worst fate imaginable for him, but it’ll also take all that power away.
