It’s kind of aggravating that online discussions of medicine as an institution suck so bad. I want to be able to call the whole thing evil bullshit without being accused of believing “bathtub” medicine is the solution to all of our problems.
There are so many issues with medicine that you’d expect the left to be concerned about… over reliance on single use plastics… certain treatment, medication, or equipment being obtained through unethical/exploitative means… doctors sexually exploiting patients… racism, fatphobia, & transphobia leading to medical neglect… elder abuse… mistreatment of addicts and anyone perceived to be “drug seeking”… pathologizing radical political beliefs & occasionally institutionalization of these individuals… & many more issues
If you make the observation that a lot of these issues are caused or exacerbated by hierarchies then people assume you want every sick and disabled person to die. It’s such an unimaginative response to defend the status quo that, currently, kills sick and disabled people, rather than take these issues seriously & encourage people to find ways that make life saving treatment for accessible and sustainable.
