Lisa Simpson giving a mildly upset look at a display case showing "The Two from Team Fortress 2", with the very same floating 2 from the video above inside it.ALT

when you’re killed, the freezecam of the player who killed you, naturally, does not freeze the entire game for everyone. it instead overlays it as a graphic over your HUD, with its z-position (basically which layer of the HUD it’s on) pretty far forward since it’s supposed to take visual priority for the few seconds you’re seeing it.

in this particular map, the game mode is based around killing other players and collecting irradiated austrlium they drop, which you have to keep on yourself without dying until a set time where somewhere on the map opens up, and you can turn them in to get points for your team. during the time you have the australium, you receive a few benefits like being healed passively and being able to heal nearby teammates passively. however, this comes with the added downside of being outlined on everyones screen through walls, including a number count of how many bars of australium you have on you, making yourself a target.

the number which indicates your australium count has a higher zpos than the frozen death cam, i imagine because they set it super high to be sure players with australium on them were always visible no matter what. what you’re seeing is the scout that killed the person recording, moving in the same path you see them moving in when the screen freezes, picking up the item that was dropped by the medic in front of him after he was killed, and continuing to run through the hall, down some stairs, and through another hallway one floor down for a moment before the cam cuts. the 2 is always over top of his head, but since he’s frozen in the death cam, the 2 just looks like it’s buzzing around.
