never forgive trigger for what they cut

marcille's hair is SO important to her. like. every couple of chapters we see her with a new hairstyle. she takes SUCH GOOD CARE OF HER HAIR, BECAUSE IT'S THAT IMPORTANT TO HER MAGIC. it's more than just her magic though; she's very deliberate about her appearance, going to great lengths to be clean, tidy, etc. she's a clean freak! ordinarily she would be really upset about being grimy and dirty like this; just look at her response to just a few chapters/episodes ago when she had to put on the frog suit. she HATED that.

but here, she's singularly determined; she doesn't have time to gripe about how she's covered in blood, sweat, and dragon viscera. she's doing this for falin, so it doesn't matter what lengths she needs to go to. and this panel spells it all out for you without any words. the gravity of this situation, that marcille is willing to go to any lengths for falin. her devotion is stronger than any fear she may have of being punished for her use of forbidden magic. THAT'S LOVE!!!ALT

started ranting abt this to a friend… i’m still so irritated that they didn’t include this

It also emphasizes how different this is from the magic we’ve seen from her before. Like, it was a major, albeit comedic, plot point that her water walking spell doesn’t even work if your hair is too dirty. She isn’t super particular about hygiene just because she likes to be clean, or thinks it’s icky otherwise, this is a serious practical concern that her magic doesn’t work as well without that purity. A difficult spell, requiring precision and with high stakes for failure, you would expect her to spend an hour beforehand fastidiously sterilizing everything involved like she’s about to do brain surgery.

But this isn’t that kind of spell. This spell is playing by an entirely different set of rules. This is magic that was created by, and for, people who are soaked in blood.
