i am looking at you, new ttrpg players. i am looking you in the eyes. you do not need to be like the professional players. it’s okay if you can’t do voices or stutter or need to pause to think about what you’re going to say or how your character would act. we are doing this for fun. gaming should never stop being fun

You do not need to be like professional players

im to going to pgrade one of those.

you SHOULD pause to think about how your character will act. Both in a ‘what would they do as a character’ way and in a 'what will make a better story’ way

speaking as somebody who has been on actual play shows - those professional players *are* pausing. A lot. And discussing their choices with each other, debating how their character would handle things, getting up for drinks in the middle of an in-character conversation, and straight up retconning in conversations in some scenarios. It’s just that almost every show always edits that out to create a singular strong narrative that is better to listen to, but obscuring the reality that improvised play is hard and needs to be thought through

#yet another reason why I love friends at the table! because you’re actually there for that process
#you’re actually with the players as they go okay what would make sense for my character right now?
#what kind of direction do we want this story to take? what would be most interesting to play through as a group?
#and honestly I think that’s playing to the strengths of ttrpgs as a medium so much more than in illusion of perfection
