In fact the organic protest was carried out by a teenage Claudette Colvin. She was dark skinned and pregnant so the NAACP didn’t want to use her as the face for the movement. It was mostly for their image-based activism but also it protected her. She still got involved with the movement though just not front and center.
She’s alive today. None of the horrors and indignities we faced are that long ago and many are still ongoing.
