what happened to Shanidar 1? violence? large animal attack? fall from a great height? if a modern human survived his severe injuries, they probably would have been in the hospital for months and in physical therapy for years. and 60,000 years ago he lived to 45 with his head bashed in, partially deaf, two broken legs, a broken neck and one functioning arm. it’s amazing his community administered medical care to the best of their abilities and cared for him and kept him alive. but also on an individual level, that dude was a fucking tank. the indomitable human spirit contained within that Neanderthal was incredible. he must have been in agony but he didn’t give up.
