This may be a bold reach, but I was researching McCarthyism and the Red Scare for history and this is sounding awfully familiar to me…
Ok sorry for reblogging this one post constantly but this is kinda important.
People in the comments are pointing out that it’s specified that these symbols aren’t stated to be acts of terrorism themselves but rather are used by violent groups and may be something to look out for, but the thing is that this is still dangerous.
These symbols are related to specific political ideologies or important movements, often civil rights movements. These movements often involve calling out the government on its bullshit and calling for a large-scale change in how things are run, and have historically faced opposition from law enforcement, sometimes to violent extremes.
By classifying these symbols and phrases as domestic terrorism symbols, they’re associating these movements with terrorism. They’re framing groups that support or follow these ideals as potential terrorists. People who say or wear these things will be met with suspicion and may be faced with accusations or unfair treatment simply because of the symbols. People will view the people who use them as terrorists due to the association.
They’re framing people who call to defund the police as terrorists. They’re framing anti capitalists as terrorists. THEY’RE FRAMING ANTI-NAZI IDEOLOGIES AS FUCKING TERRORISTS.
This has happened before. During the Red Scare, many prominent parts of the government framed specific beliefs, behaviors, and movements as potential signs of communism and therefore potentially dangerous. Even though very few accusations made against people had any evidence and most fell through, these accusations left the people affected with a diminished reputation and in some cases lost them their jobs and had them blacklisted from their respective industries. Conservatism was at an all-time high, and some even tried to use accusations of communism to discredit the Civil Rights movement and MLK.
It hasn’t gotten nearly that far yet, but the signs are beginning to show. This could potentially be very dangerous and ruin many lives if things progress further in this direction. Please, fucking listen to reason.
