we lost the plot on “slur reclamation” the second people started boldly claiming once they personally reclaim one nobody else is allowed to have negative feelings about it. speaking as a self identified faggot i wouldn’t go around telling people faggot isn’t a slur just because i like to call myself one..and yet in 2024 we’re still seeing people raked over the coals for saying “call yourself whatever you want but i don’t want to be called queer” like where is the basic respect. childish behavior.
“#slur discourse and slur reclamation within the queer community is so deeply white to me tbh
#like it wouldn’t exist if white people knew how slurs work beyond ‘nono [word] people can’t say’
#and then they go and use nigga as an example when queer is very much not like nigga lmao”
hey i want more people to reblog this version of the post. while my original post was specifically about lgbt slur discourse, as i am white and have never been the target of a racial slur, it’s undeniable that said discourse is predominantly led by white people with a fundamental lack of understanding of the history of slurs and their violent applications. it’s a discussion i don’t believe can be held without being informed on the topic and listening to black voices. i’m really grateful to everyone who’s added to this version of the post in the tags as well and hope it’s alright that i share a couple of them here for others to read.
[image ID: tumblr tags that read “#honestly so much of slur reclamation amongst white people at least is derived from a desire to say slurs #and it’s starting to spread to other communities #I’m watching white disabled people insist upon slur reclamation to non white disabled people #white also a pattern of those white disabled people either only just recently became or found out they’re disabled”. end ID]
[image ID: tumblr tags that read “#reminds me of that white person who was arguing that not Reclaiming slurs gives oppressors more power…. are you hearing yourself? #slur reclaimation to white people barely ever has nuance because their only exposure to it is seeing people people reclaim it #and they arent black obvs so they will never understand how and why it works when it comes to the n word #all they know is black ppl say the n and nobody else should say it. thats all they know #and theyre excited to fucking say slurs with no repercussions.” end ID]
