Pet peeve: activism posts that are like “you should feel angry and sad!” but don’t suggest anything to, you know, actually do. Like OK, I followed your advice, now I’m angry and sad. It sucks. The problem is exactly as bad as it was before. How was this helpful at all
I think the people who make these posts think that if people are angry and sad, it will motivate them to help solve the problem. But being motivated doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll know how to solve the problem, so even if you do take action (instead of just feeling defeated and giving up), it might be the wrong action because you’re misinformed. So you can be motivated and still not be helpful at all.
The people making these posts would be more effective at solving the problems they talk about if they skipped the whole “you should feel bad” part and just gave information about things people can do. Donation links, protests, groups to volunteer with, whatever.
But they never do. They seem to think their job begins and ends at getting people to feel bad, which is both unnecessary and unhelpful! Way to put suffering in the world for literally no benefit whatsoever.
