3 months into a genocide, going on 4, where almost 2 million Palestinians have had their homes, their livelihoods and their dignity stripped away and you type out the words “compassion fatigue” and hit post? After 75 years of occupation, the razing of the Gaza Strip to the ground along with their hospitals, their places of worship, their archives and you do that? A doctor who attempts to save his own daughter but is unable to operate with anesthesia being forced to watch as she passes away from the magnitude of the pain. Motaz, standing on a pile of rubble, holding a dismembered hand, reporting as a bullet whizzes past his head. Women being forced to cut off a piece of their tents to use as sanitary products as they endure their periods while the earth shakes around them.
When these people do their best to survive hell every waking day, while the world turns a blind eye, you sit there and type out the words “compassion fatigue”. Unimaginable.
swap out compassion fatigue for desensitization to violence and see how ugly that truth looks. your nervous system is now accustom to this bloodshed. it is numbing not exhausting.
