Millennials of Tumblr dot com, what was your weird niche fandom that you were part of a community dedicated to in the mid/late 2000s? Not Harry Potter or LOTR or Ouran or something, it has to be niche. Something where when you talk about it, you have to spend at least 3 minutes just explaining why this Was Even A Thing. Where someone who doesn’t know just how intensely balkanized 2000s messageboard culture was, would be shocked at how this thing had whole websites dedicated to it.

Mine was “teenage girls who were obsessed with The Who.” I specify the age/gender because we specifically had our own forums (if anyone by chance on here was a regular on Cobwebs & Strange circa 2005-6, hi! I forgot what username I had there, but on Xanga I was harddaysafternoon / postcardsofthehanging) that were separate from wherever middle-aged dads were talking about The Who in the mid-2000s. We’d occasionally have such a guy show up on one of ours because he found it on Google, and make an introduction, maybe one more very confused post, and then leave.

This wasn’t an RPF or shipping centric fandom, either. I cannot explain it; the classic rock bandom circles I was into around 2005 were not into that. But they were a thing. There was a girl who quit Xanga/LiveJournal because she decided that to be a true fan she needed to live like she was in the 1960s and therefore couldn’t use any technology that did not exist in 1965.

Anyway, tell me about your super-niche 2000s fandom and its drama
