Community Fridges (”Freedges”)
One of many mutual aid tactics that’s blown up during the pandemic, a freedge is simply a refrigerator set up in a public space to be filled and utilized by the community, typically cared for by a group of volunteers who clean, stock, and check up on the freedge every so often
freedge.org has a map of existing freedges (shown above), guides to start your own, and even gives microgrants to people who want to set up a freedge in their area
If you have excess produce from your garden, space in your front yard, or even an old working fridge you’re trying to get rid of, look for a freedge organization in your community - or start your own!
