my favorite thing is when murderbot has too many things going on and replies to a question with a canned buffer phrase. its so funny to me. you stressed out this poor robot so much it had no choice but to go into customer service mode.
The beauty of Murderbot being such an unreliable narrator in the books is that it is actually 100% plausible MB was hallucinating a self-insert Sanctuary Moon fanfic the entire time it was being rescued and left those details out of its narrative because they were too embarrassing.
I imagine that for MB, realizing it accidentally called Mensah “captain” out loud to her face like some star-struck ensign is a humiliation on par with a high school student realizing they accidentally called their favorite teacher “mom.”
i am literally the only person in my history class who has been turning in work consistently all year and i just got an email from my professor saying that if i’m not feeling up to it i dont have to bother writing the 18 page final paper he assigned i just have to not tell anybody god is real
For a while i thought you meant that you had to not tell people that god was real.
The main consequence of the majority of autism research being led by allistic scientists is that none of the questions we actually want answered will get answered.
Why do so many of us have gastrointestinal issues and food allergies?
What do normal brains vs brains with sensory processing issues look like via brain scans?
Etc etc
But noooooo, instead we have 800 fucking dehumanizing studies about the “cause of autism” and “autistic people have emotions apparently????”
I’d also say that we need more autistic scientists, but that would also require my rant about how academia discourages and alienates autistic people and others who don’t fit into a certain metaphorical box, despite science being ABOUT THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX.
Physical media is really awesome but please don’t discount sites like Bandcamp where you can buy DRM-free digital media. Buying raw media files lets you:
- Store a collection of millions of songs on a single hard drive (or burn them to CDs yourself!)
- Directly support artists, even those without the time/clout/resources to sell physical media
- With 20 minutes of effort, share your media library with anyone, anywhere, as much as you want.
Giant publishing companies are trying *really hard* to convince everyone that digital media is synonymous with you-don’t-own-shit streaming services, eternal subscription fees, and locked-down snoopscope video players. But there’s a reason so many artists sell their works online without those catches. Go support them!
Some more advice for fellow adults: set your ego aside and let younger people (even kids!) educate and teach you. There is no shame in looking to a younger person for education and knowledge. It is, actually, a big facet of humanity that we teach each other - why, then, does that teacher need to be the Right Age in order for you to be willing to learn from them?
What some of y'all call “recovery” and “healing” is just… growing up.
The theme I keep coming back to, the theme I keep writing about over and over, is the inextricability of ableism (specifically neurobigotry) and ageism.
The pathologizing of youth. The infantilizing of disabled adults. The structuring and micromanaging of childhood leading to ever more opportunities for “deviancy” to be classified as “disordered.” The “neurological” push to raise the age of majority. The constant framing of disabled parents and caregivers as “unfit” or “bad influences” on children. And on and on.
Ageism and neurobigotry are such an interconnected tangle loop mobius strip that people are using the “healing”/“recovery” framework for basic human maturation.
When you were little, you uncritically accepted the worldview of your parents and other adults in your life, but now that you’re older and “recovered,” you see it differently?
That’s called growing up. You grew up.
When you had less information and experience informing your worldview, you saw things one way, and now that you’ve “healed,” you see things differently?
That’s called learning. You learned new information and changed your perspective accordingly.
But. But. Changes in one’s relationship to oneself and one’s family of origin are especially common during times of major transition. That’s not pathological. That’s not even abnormal. If you see the world differently than you did before a major life transition, that does not mean that you went from a diseased state to a nondiseased state (“recovery”), or from an injured state to an uninjured state (“healing”). Time passed. You got older. Everyone else got older. You changed. Other people changed. Your family changed. The social context in which you live changed. The pathology paradigm has no place in this phenomenon.
People are out here saying that “People should heal themselves before they have their own children,” and then when asked, what they mean by “heal themselves” is “learn how to effectively communicate with children.” That. That is a skill. Learning a skill is not “healing.” Lack of a particular skill set is not a disorder you have to “recover” from. You just have to learn the skill.
My good bitch, what does change and growth have to do with recovery?
And this isn’t even a new observation, because people have talked about how parents of developmentally disabled children will credit “therapy” and “recovery” for their children’s natural developmental trajectory (if your child gained a skill after a year of intensive therapy, that doesn’t mean “the therapy worked,” that means they got older and developed the maturation to acquire that skill). A lot of the rhetoric around early childhood education does the same thing (the reason your 6 year old can hold a pencil now and he couldn’t last year is because his bones got stronger and his fine motor skills improved, not because his high-quality preschool made him ready to compete).
But this. This is adults doing it to themselves! And it’s so very original-sin-coded. You are born Unhealthy, but through continual effort and right practice, you can Recover and Heal.
I keep seeing the idea that teen members of Gen Z are the last generation to experience an actual childhood and honestly? I agree.
We as a society have made being a child so hostile, so miserable, that kids aren’t interested in being young anymore.
How children are constantly told to grow up, how the color has been sucked out of the world, how because of cringe culture children will be fucking torn apart by grown adults all over the internet, how children are experiencing crisis after crisis. Children are shamed for their interests and hobbies and style by grown ass adults and teens who are far too old to be doing this. How kids aren’t allowed to be anywhere without being made fun of by adults who are miserable.
Being a child is fucking hostile now, and I don’t blame this generation of kids for trying too hard to be mature/grown. Because people treat children like shit, so who would want to be one?
Privilege is when you lack barriers another person faces due to your identity (or perceived identity!) and social position, and it’s often unnoticeable that you’re experiencing it until someone points it out.
An example: I have privilege over my POC friends because I am perceived as white. My man friends have privilege over me because I am perceived as a woman. So my Puerto Rican man friend and I have privilege over each other in different ways, him because he doesn’t face sexism and misogyny the way I do, and me because I don’t face racism the way he does.
Relative Privilege is when one person with the same identity as another experiences discrimination or barriers to a lesser degree than the other.
An example: My friend and I are both Autistic, and we both experience discrimination due to that. Our autism presents differently, and (generally speaking!), I am more disabled by it than he is. Thus, he holds relative privilege over me. He is still discriminated against more than an allistic person is, but he is discriminated against for his autism less than I am for mine. This is relative privilege. This can also be applied more broadly, for example, I hold relative privilege over many disabled people who are not Autistic but are also otherwise disabled, because they experience more barriers than I do.
Also please note that privilege, because it’s given or denied from larger social structures, is often more about how people perceive your identities than your actual identities! For example, I am not a woman, but I am perceived as a woman, and thus experience discrimination based on that.
Experiencing privilege is not a morally bad thing, and experiencing discrimination is not a morally high thing. It’s easy to fall into the identity olympics, but it’s not helpful. Where you have privilege, use it to lift the voices of those who don’t. You are essential. Where you don’t have privilege, learn your history, find your community, and embrace yourself. You are essential.
I don’t know, the protest from adults of “you’re treating me like a child!” to point out that they’re being treated with disregard, or having their autonomy revoked, or being treated like a lesser person who doesn’t deserve to be treated like a human says something about the way we treat children. If you are being treated so poorly that you liken it to being treated like children, doesn’t that tell you something about the way children are, by and large, treated?
Every form of abuse commonly perpetuated by parents is also commonly perpetuated by teachers and therapists.
Every form of abuse commonly perpetuated by teachers is also commonly perpetuated by parents and therapists.
Every form of abuse commonly perpetuated by therapists is also commonly perpetuated by parents and teachers.
Yet discussion of abuse by any one of those agents is always met with the response that the other two agents can solve it, like a constant, depressing three-way loop.
If you respond to abuse by teachers with “This is why parents need to be more involved!” and respond to abuse by parents with “This is why therapists should be more involved!” and respond to abuse by therapists with “Parents and teachers should stop this!” then… what happens to kids who have parents, teachers, and therapists who are all abusive in the exact same way? Which is… quite a common scenario?
this obsession with physically birthing one’s “own” biological children, to the extent that other forms of kinship are understood as anything from pathetic to outright objectionable, is really fucking creepy. beyond the bizarre fixation on offspring not as other people to care for, but physical extensions of oneself and one’s supposed “genetic identity”, there is a sinister, bioessentialist current to this obsession which marks all non- and post-biological forms of family making as deviant - a deviation from “good” and “natural” kinship.
Suffused with ethnocentrism, nationalism, and cisheteropatriarchal privilege, this model of what it means to be close to one another cheapens deliberate, autonomous care, and turns to a “family” model that casts children as debtors and parents/~elders~ as lords, whose genetic proximity imbues them with the ability to preside over “their” children even after they reach adulthood via coercion (guilt, shame) and force.
(watching hardcore porn) derivative. it insists upon itself. not even a dutch angle could- hold on (cums) sorry. not even a dutch angle could save this trite
i can’t stop thinking about this. this kind of shit is not like milsim plane nerds with their own super-expensive desktop cockpit recreations. that kind of hardware makes sense to exist.
this does not. they’re playing world of tanks which is like the “call of duty” of tank games (casual, players only slightly bad-smelling). it also doesn’t have support for tank peripherals. no game does. no trainers do afaik. which means that (assuming this isn’t just a video editing) all of that shit they are fucking with translates into mouse/keyboard inputs that the game understands. that’s weird/hard and perplexing, uh, and considering that “tank peripherals” aren’t a thing that exist i can only guess they built them theirselves
which is fucking hilarious because why are they so good. why does the fucking cannon breech have a little dry ice smoke effect when the breech opens like they just shot a shell. what. manual turret traverse crank?? did they build a fucking ready rack!! they’re even using the correct phraseology which means one of these mofos read a PDF file
god im infected by that posting style that’s like “posting about my thing #my thing” i just got back to my apartment and my first thought had to go and formulate itself as damn im so sleepy i haven’t even had my tea #mytea
Reblog this post :) Especially if you’re on mobile, you’ll lose the post if you click the link without thinking. Take a note from your elders before you
Interesting note: It definitely uses whoever you’re following now, not at that date. Even the 2020 one includes a lot of people I was absolutely not following yet in Feb 2020, which is actually kind of cool, I can see what they were reblogging from this fandom before I got into it.
if you’re on desktop you can easily customize this and go back to a specific day on your dashboard. first, disable “endless scrolling” in your dashboard preferences, otherwise you’ll only see a handful of posts. next you have to find a post/reblog from that date (through your blog’s archive for example), copy its post id from the url (the long number at the end) and then attach it to this url:
One thousand years in the future, the human race has transcended the need for physical bodies. Out of a resurgence of nostalgia, companies are offering highly sought after timeshares to rent space in a body. Today your number is called and you and forty-nine other consciousnesses occupy a body; you get to run the nose for a week.
Humans are galactic cryptids. Though benevolent, they are known to appear out of nowhere to shower anything furry, or “Cute” with affection and gifts of food, or technology. They are known by their call, an unintelligible, though strangely affectionate noise - “Whoseagoodbooooy?”
desegregate all sports now. no more gendered sports. its stupid
if you absolutely must, in primarily muscle force-based sports, create competitive classes like in boxing except separated by body comp, not just pure body weight. i mean, if you must. this will eliminate any tiny advantages in muscle mass. some will say basketball should have height classes but frankly some of the NBA’s most impressive players were not tall so idk that this actually matters ever
the primary athletic impediment to all women is overwhelmingly cultural and psychological. i have won probably half the physical competitions with cis men that i have engaged in, friendly or otherwise. even without the benefit of a lifetime of people trying to make me throw or hit balls, i have won wrestling matches, sparring matches, funny backyard foam sword fights, video games, equestrian activities, dance, endurance tests of various kinds, etc. i’m small and weak. men think theyre stronger and more skilled than they are, women think the opposite about themselves
humans just arent that differently-sized or -shaped, as a species. we have almost no sexual dimorphism at all compared to the vast majority of other mammals.
animals that have similar levels of sexual dimorphism to humans, for example cats, dogs, and horses, do not generally have competitive events segregated by sex. the dog agility trials dont normally have separate leagues for male and female dogs (gendered competitions exist they’re just unusual). because it doesnt matter. there is no kentucky derby 2 just for girl horses. thats not a thing
remove all gendered categories from online shopping websites and universalize clothing and shoe sizing. im sick of having to search two entirely different sections of ebay when im just trying to find a nice velvet loafer in size 39 EU. what the hell is “women’s clothing”
I will never forget when I tried on a really nice coat at Goodwill and got all turned around because the buttons were on the wrong side. I thought it was because the brand name was very obviously Japanese, but I looked it up and it turns out my 6'1" 220lb frame is just a Japanese women’s XL. I still think about that coat, I wish I had bought it but I was so convinced that the buttons would drive me nuts and when I went back for it it was already gone. I hope some other large hairy man is happy with it 🥹
Tl;dr how you can personally make Neil Gaiman lose money (and not be a jerk to others.)
I see a lot of folks upset that NG will financially benefit from residuals and other compensation surrounding his involvement in the adaptation of Sandman and Good Omens (and he will.) But the answer isn’t “rage at the fans who are so emotionally attached to their blorbos because they grieve differently, and then somehow NG will be financially punished.” That’s lower-class/middle-class thinking. NG is too rich and financially diversified to really be hurt by little boycott or a couple of show cancellations (though said cancellations can cause life-changing poverty to the little guys who signed contracts and turned down other opportunities before all of this came out. Boy does NG love women in poverty 🤮)
So if you want to substantially reduce the wealth of someone at NG’s financial level—you need to do it with professional services fees.
I’ve reblogged this like 20 times but knowing he’s suing one of his victims has made me come back to do it some more because fuck him. How very fucking dare he.
if a sims movie is truly being made, i want it to be a horror movie where they do not acknowledge being sims and there is no evidence of them being sims except that they speak simlish and have plumbobs. i want ladders disappearing from pools and strangers breaking into houses and random basement prisons and people catching on fire while making macaroni. the whole thing must be in simlish with subtitles like a foreign film. that’s the only way you’ll get me to watch it.
