i can’t wait for when chatGPT and ai image generation also crashes and each prompt cost $50 an attempt. oh you can’t get your stolen big tiddy anime ghibli art for free anymore? you want to buy real big boy art from real artists now? beg for it. beg for it like a dog.

To inject a bit of realism,

OpenAI is losing mind boggling amounts of money every week. Not month, not year. Every week. Every second that passes, every prompt that is fulfilled, they lose a bit more of those tens of billions they have to raise every quarter from investors to prevent bankruptcy. The second investors stop increasing the amount they additionally invest on top of what they’ve already invested every time an opportunity presents itself and actually ask for a return instead, OpenAI will be forced to increase the price of their APIs threefold just to prevent imminent bankruptcy.

As you can imagine such a price increase would probably induce bankruptcy in the dozens of “AI startups” serving as OpenAIs demand, or would at least force them to decrease use significantly.

Additionally, OpenAI would need to cut expenditures related to projected higher demand (that due to the price increase would collapse), forcing them to cancel commitments to companies like CoreWeave. The problem is that CoreWeave pretty much only exists to serve OpenAI. Thus it and other OpenAI partners would either die or massively downsize and go into bankruptcy proceedings, meaning that all the big investors and banks which overextended themselves with these AI investments would suddenly have disasters on their hands. The Japanese SoftBank is literally taking out loans (money they do not have) just to invest more in this stuff because they literally could not afford it otherwise.

With the giant financial institutions, like Vanguard and BlackRock (you know, the ones that use the big companies and politicians like marionettes), suddenly having their opinions on AI soured, Big Tech will probably be forced to divest as well.

Generating a thousand images of stolen big tiddy anime ghibli art may take 0.06–0.29 kWh of electricity (a few cents) and 5 hours of GPU wear (like 3 dollars assuming the GPUs cost only $5000) in Microsoft’s cloud when they’re selling it with 0 profit margin, but it will surely take far far more on your computer if it’s even powerful enough.

Would people be as enthusiastic if every time they tweak the prompt it costs them a cent or three per image that is generated (they often generate several at a time for each prompt)? Because that’s how it would look (assuming you have a good enough PC to put the GPUs in). With the time, cost, and initial investment you would have to put in to get exactly what you imagined you might as well commission a cheap artist.

Generative AI will, in my opinion, become a niche hobby for people with latest generation gaming PCs and a ghoulish corporation or another that wants to break an artists strike and doesn’t know how. I mean, if copyright law doesn’t catch up, if it does, then it’s pretty much over.

Oh also, training the models. That’s not calculated in here, but it’s the most expensive part though you only need to do it to improve it or to make it generate new stuff that only recently started existing.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but please please please please please explore the settings. Of your phone, computer, of every app you use. Investigate the UI, toggle some things around and see what happens. You won’t break anything irreperably without a confirmation box asking you if you really mean to do that thing. And you can just look up what a setting will do before touching it if you’re really worried ok?

Worst case scenario you just have to change the settings back if you don’t like what happened but it is so so so important to explore the tools available to you and gain a better understanding for how the stuff you use works.

Even if you already know. Even if you’re comfortable with how you use it now. You don’t just have to accept whtever experience has been handed to you by default and it’s good for you to at least know what’s available to you.

Yeah. I’ve been “good at computers” since I was a kid and since I was a kid I’ve been telling people that all it is is a willingness to look at settings and push buttons.

Computers are good at “are you sure?” and “reset to defaults”. There’s a safety net. Go look at the options, and push ‘em if you’re not sure. That’s like 90% of being “good at computers” : not being scared to push buttons and fiddle with options when something is broken or you need to learn a new thing

My mom treated me like a computer wizard because I knew where in the settings menu to look up her pc’s specs to see if she had a graphics card or not. It’s literally behind like two menus max. Please investigate your technology, capitalism wants you in a walled garden, one of the best ways you can fight back is spending some time finding the weak bricks.

im american and i knew that like in kindergarten so i think some of you are just stupid sorry

“US curriculums don’t talk about-” ok? And? Are you guys not absorbing literally any information from the outside world? Tv, movies, books, people talking around you? Hello????

I’m sorry do people need to be taught that other countries have metropolitan cities in school or is that information you can kinda infer from like. existing in real life

Absurd that people will just say shit like this with their whole chest. If I had somehow gotten through life to age 21 believing that my country had cities but my silly primitive sepia-toned neighbours didn’t then when contrary information came up I’d keep my mouth shut and head right to wikipedia. I’d take that misconception to the fucking grave.

For USAmericans who care to listen; the issue here is not that you were never taught or exposed to facts about the world but rather that ignorance is used as a shield for criticism. This is considered a dick move as you’re basically saying you know you’re ignorant, you’re saying you don’t want to learn.

If you’re older than fifteen and not currently trapped in or recently escaped from a very overbearing cult then “I wasn’t taught that at school” isn’t an excuse for beliefs that reveal that you fundamentally don’t think of other places as real or important. “It wouldn’t occur to me to put ‘USA’ on my address for international shipping because I just expect everyone in other countries to know where my state is even though I don’t know theirs” “I just assumed that other countries on my continent wouldn’t have cities for some reason” “naturally I just assume that having states is a US thing and other countries either don’t have them or they don’t mean anything, other places don’t have regional differences like we do, we’re so varied and everywhere else is a Country Of Hats” THIS IS A YOU PROBLEM. We all have shitty education systems, yours isn’t special. We all have racist governments and nationalist propoganda machines, yours isn’t special. Your American exceptionalism isn’t suddenly cute and humble if you try to make it about your country being extra bad instead of extra good. You just learned you made a stupid assumption due to inherent racist or nationalist or whatever beliefs? Now you have better information. Maybe think QUIETLY TO YOURSELF about what other dumb assumptions you have because of that and spend some time on wikipedia or watching foreign movies or something instead of crying to the internet that it’s your fourth grade teacher’s fault for not making you memorise a list of foreign cities.

We all believe dumb shit and don’t know anything. You think I know anything about your states? I don’t. When people from non-English-speaking countries started buying my books online I couldn’t understand the address formats to post them; I had to learn. I don’t automatically know which countries in the world are larger than mine, I look up the info if I need it. Sometimes I say make a bad assumption and dumb shit and people are like “Derin what you said is wrong actually” and tell me otherwise and then I learn that. This is not an issue of having information. Everyone can be wrong about stuff, but your “uphill in the snow both ways” ranting about how nobody should expect better from you because Your Uniquely Bad Culture And Schooling is at fault for every problem is getting old.

Y'all don’t seem to understand that, for a lot of Americans, the first time they experience truly global thinking is University.

That’s why Universities are so dangerous to certain political factions.

It’s not rocket science, but education is IMPORTANT and not all educations are created the same. I would encourage you to try to understand that an alarming % of the USA is illiterate or has a very low level of education. That’s not necessarily their fault.

Be kind. Understand that the world SUCKS and some people need a little help seeing that the world is this huge, complicated, interconnected machine that runs BETTER with kindness.

I cannot believe there’s absolutely no way to watch free shows and movies anymore, there are too many paid streaming platforms and pirating websites have viruses and ads preventing you from watching it uninterrupted((.)) id rather follow the rules and purchase media moving forward because it is too inconvenient. Seriously, free and no ads or viruses with 1080p streaming is DEAD.

Exactly! It’s freaking annoying when I want to watch movies but I would have to subscribe to like 24 different services . Just to watch the shows that I like.

Oh and wouldn’t it be nice for cartoons? Just anything animated. I just wanna stream things without getting conned. Must I be cartoonless forever?

i like using streaming apps but there are waaaay too many and they’re all stealing my data .i wish there was a secure and organized way to have millions of shows and movies available one one app. but alas. we’ve truly gone full circle back to cable + now it spies on you. its a real shame. i dont want to fill my device storage with tons of boring and stupid cash grabs.

i know, it’s so annoying for everything to be paid nowadays, especially movies and tv shows. it would be perfect if i could watch them without getting infected by some virus or some shit. i’m fine with ads, they gotta run themselves somehow, but i want to watch stuff and .live! if they have to use different domains i’m okay with that too, because free media is .top dog either way.

for mobile users, it especially sucks, because you can’t just use websites and you have to not only pay, but you have to download a billion apps just to find what the thing you wanna watch is on. it doesn’t help that the streaming services take up...so much space. so much.

“US curriculums don’t talk about-” ok? And? Are you guys not absorbing literally any information from the outside world? Tv, movies, books, people talking around you? Hello????

*sigh*

No.

Just… no. Don’t be a dick about this. This is not a situation where being a dick will help.

First, people do not just know things. There’s a LOT out there that you - and yes, that’s you, too - simply don’t know. And you don’t even know you don’t know! You never asked!

And that’s the second thing. Not everyone is equally interested in every aspect of the world. I know more about the rules of Chunkey than Scrimmage, and people still play scrimmage! But I’ve never cared. So, yes, it’s entirely possible for someone to not know about metropolitan centers in Mexico because they never asked.

Which is the third thing. You basically assume that media depictions are correct. Not because you think TV, films, &c are authoritative sources of information, but because why would they lie to you? You’re not applying critical thinking to these things because there’s no apparent reason behind it. It’s like… your friend is telling you about this boss he had named Ted, and afterwards he says he punked you since the boss’s name was actually Bill. And you’re going… okay, but why did you change that? Why would you lie about that? What did you accomplish?
So you don’t ask “Are there really a lot of pine trees near DC like you see in the X-Files?” It’s just not something a reasonable person asks about.

And yes, it’s true - a lot of people aren’t all that intellectually curious. They just aren’t interested. You’re not going to make them more curious by being a dick to them. You’re going to make them learn One(1) new thing: intellectually curious people are assholes. And they don’t want to be an asshole, so….

So, yeah. Don’t be a dick about this. The American education system is an awful patchwork which just doesn’t talk about a lot of important stuff and misrepresents things. And it’s not all the same stuff, either. And availability and accuracy of supplementary knowledge varies wildly. You will not improve this by being a dick about it, especially to people who are admitting there are gaps in their knowledge.

That’s fine and all, but that’s not the problem. The problem is that, even if people don’t just know things, it’s always americans that admit their ignorance of life in the global south and rather than saying “good to know” or just learning quietly about the world outside their bubble, make themselves victims of the abhorrent American Education System. As if the gaps in their knowledge are solely the education system’s fault, and they should be validated by us, the people of the global south who have to be informed about what goes on in the US because it impacts us dierctly.

It’s just frustrating to always have americans (because europeans, even when they’re as ignorant don’t victimize themselves) come into conversations about somewhere other than the US and try to make it about themselves, about how bad they have it, about how terrible their education system is. People shouldn’t be dicks in general, but when the issue is as widespread as it is, some snap back in frustration, and asking us to keep coddling american’s feelings even in such minor issues as these is not an actual solution to the widespread ignorance about the rest of the world present in the US.

I don’t think anyone can say they had a truly healthy childhood. I feel like there’s a baseline level of trauma that comes with the fact that you’re the legal property of someone else for your most vulnerable years, no matter how great your parents are, and this only gets exponentially worse for every degree away from perfect experts with principled objections to normative child abuse your parents are.

The simple presence of this factoid causes damage proportional to how aware you are of it at the time. I know that even if my parents had done things better, I don’t know how they’d reconcile the fact that my perspective always included thoughts such as, “I don’t have a choice because they are currently my life support”

“Are you saying that Jesus isn’t fully man” he’s literally not. He’s half deity. Why did you word it like that?

“Jesus was fully human and fully divine” is conventionally accepted doctrine. It’s called the hypostatic union. It’s in the Athanasian creed.

Sounds like wormnoodless is recapitulating Eutychianism (Christ exists in one nature and of two), which was rejected by the Fourth Ecumenical Council in 451, instead adopting Dyophysitism (Jesus Christ is one person of one substance and one hypostasis, with two distinct, inseparable natures: divine and human), which is still the main belief of most major denominations.

The bimbo feminism girls who love Legally Blonde really missed like the whole point of the movie. The point is that she’s not a brainless bimbo. She saves the day with her knowledge of haircare, sure, but she got in the room by going to law school. You cannot reduce that movie down to “Girl knowledge saves the day!” because the perm wouldn’t have mattered if she hadn’t spent the entire rest of the movie working her ass off in an unrelated field. The feminist angle is that she can have girly interests and also be smart, not that having girly interests is feminist in itself

I think it’s also worth adding that the main reason Elle is so effective is because she’s sweet to everyone and finds ways to connect with people. She’s not sitting around judging other women for knowing less about beauty than she does. So if you’re making tiktoks about being That Girl or snarking at other girls, you did NOT learn your lesson from Elle Woods.

Oh, we really can’t be keeping THAT gem in the tags.
