there’s a fine line between being wary of manipulation and becoming completely paranoid because you get very close to the realisation that pretty much all human interaction involves doing things we hope will lead to a result we like

this post is about a lot of things. it’s about my ex saying it was manipulative to talk to them in a cute voice because that influenced their emotions. it’s also about someone on this webbed site saying being funny is “engagement farming”. like yeah every single conversation you have is going to be “manipulative” if your standard for that is “did something with the goal of eliciting a response”. if that bothers you go live in a hut in the forest and speak only to the trees. I’ll be over here manipulating my friends into being happy by giving them compliments

Unrelated to the op but the backlash to this post has gotten me thinking about how there’s such an anti-atheism slant in society. Mention you don’t think “souls” should be used when discussing actual policy affecting people across the nation/world and people want to regulate you to being gross fat slob from reddit and itching to misgender you or steal a man’s personal selfie that’s been used time and time again to ridicule him and others for the crime of being fat and existing. Say that you don’t want people’s politics to solely be religious concepts and you get compared to the “Amazing Atheist” (is he even still around?) and harassed and mocked endlessly like. How does this not prove that you’re all uber religious? You make jokes about how cringe Catholics are and how funny it is the pope’s form chicago but yall are just protestants ready to snap on a tranny the moment she says she doesn’t believe in souls.

come on

humans want to believe in souls so bad it makes them stupid

Ok, sorry, so what’s the word then?

The entire concept of soul/spirit/etc is to explain why the heck some living beings have a personality/morality but also why we’re alive not just to go around to survive so we can procreate before dying, but also to experience things, discover them etc etc.

Like what is the word then, to explain why we’re not mindlessly alive???

I’m at a complete lost here, and with your logic spirit isn’t the answer since it’s also religious (if not way more).

Because our brains are complex organs that developed through millions of years of evolution. Other animals have personalities, we are not alone in that. We are animals that developed our traits through continued evolution, “we’re not alive to just procreate” we are alive because our ancestors did procreate. Everything we are now is because of passing on certain genes that survive in the environment best, and having brains that operate like this is part of that.

“Why we’re alive” there isn’t a why. It just happened. That is how the world works. If you want to be religious and believe in something putting us here, that’s a-ok, but there is science behind why we are the way we are. Not everything has clean cut perfect answers, but that is the way of the world.

The soul is a religious concept that has no basis in reality. There is no way to physically measure it, there is no evidence it exists. If you choose to believe in souls then that’s cool for you, but “souls” is not an adequate way to base your politics around - especially when “souls” is a huge thing for right wing bigots.

Okay. But subjects like history are also important. Finding, analyzing, and putting primary sources in context is a skill. Understanding and thinking about the past is a skill—especially as we swim in misinformation. The humanities should also not be phoned in either even if that means classes look different in the future.

By using antibodies from a human donor with a self-induced hyper-immunity to snake venom, scientists have developed the most broadly effective antivenom to date, which is protective against the likes of the black mamba, king cobra, and tiger snakes in mouse trials. Described in the journal Cell, the antivenom combines protective antibodies and a small molecule inhibitor and opens a path toward a universal antiserum.

Ok, that’s fucking wild.

This guy Tim Friede wasn’t any kind of researcher or doctor. He was just a snake collector who thought it would be cool to try and become immune to snake venom by injecting small amounts and working up. For 18 goddamn years. He nearly died at least once.

Later, actual scientists heard about him and realized that since he survived his blood must be full of antibodies that neutralize many kinds of snake venoms. Using a sample of his blood they were able to develop an antibody cocktail that seems to be effective against many types of tropical snake bites, a sort of universal antivenom.

Absolute mad lad benefiting humanity.

From the last article:

“There’s a tremendous treatment industry that needs this to be a disease — a thing they can charge people to treat,” Prause says.
But promoting certain therapies may be ill-advised. “You can harm patients by using treatment models that aren’t research-supported,” Prause says.

“Porn Addiction” isn’t a real thing. Medical research has repeatedly tried and failed to define such a syndrome. The only people who do are “spiritual healing” quacks and people who want to send their kids to conversion therapy “reform camps”.

Y'all are repeating far-right purity-culture sex shaming propaganda.

I’m so tired of having this debate over and over.

It’s somewhat missed in this discussion, but treating something that they consider an “immoral bad habit” as equivalent to physiological dependency to a substance is kind of gross, because it means that they are also saying that people who have chemical dependencies are morally deficient.

This belief, that drug addiction is associated with moral deficiency is not only a source of a lot of the prejudice and oppression that face recreational drug users and any other groups that can be associated with drug-use, but has also lead to a rejection of actually effective interventions and treatments in favor of ineffective, moralistic ones (i.e. 12-step programs)

Also? A memo from the Department of Justice doesn’t mean shit. That’s not a law. That’s not a legal precedent. It’s just telling you how they’re going to ignore your rights without any legal standing to do so. It’s gonna get someone killed when ICE decides they’re going to force their way into a house one day and the person inside decides to use their legal rights to defend themselves. And then the fascists will want to use that to further escalate.

always great to hear my boss say “we’re living through the collapse of the american library system” while I’m at my american library system job

anyway if you hadn’t heard the current administration is trying to entirely defund and dissolve the IMLS which provides libraries with funding, especially useful for rural libraries and very small systems that don’t have access to private funding to keep them afloat. This will absolutely devastate many many libraries across the country.

my mum has severe knee problems and needs a replacement. Today she was told she’s too fat to be operated on and the knee specialist suggested she gets a gastric band - which also involves surgery. So my mum was like first of all you didn’t read my file because it explains that I’m not fat because I eat too much second of all you said it’s impossible for me to get surgery and then suggested I get a surgery about it? He then asked her her weight and height, didn’t believe her answer, and made her prove it to him because she “looks fatter than that”. So she was like so you also just entirely based this on looks instead of actual numbers?

My mom went through something similar. She needed a knee replacement and her doctor wouldn’t okay it until she lost weight, which was difficult given the whole knee problem preventing her from walking thing. He told her she was too dangerous to operate on and that there were just too many risks.

My mom tried to lose weight in vain for months before she finally gave into my begging her to get a second opinion. The first doctor she saw next scheduled her for surgery the same day she met him. When my mom asked about the risk of operating on her he told her that there was some minor risks for complication and that all she would need to do to alleviate the risk was spend an extra night in the hospital so that they could keep a look out for any complications.

There were zero. There were also zero complications when she had her other knee done, her hip replaced and her gallbladder removed.

Almost like the first doctor was entirely full of shit and just trying to coerce his patient to lose weight by scaring her for fucking nothing, even when she was living day to day in excruciating pain and desperately needed a surgery.
