Y'all should definitely read the entire essay but i just wanna spotlight this bit, especially the last paragraph.

White supremacy is a feedback loop. Not only does it dictate Black exclusion it is thru this exclusion that we establish white superiority. Not only does op perform this in the way he crops the piece to center what he himself considers desirable (and what he sees himself in/mirrors himself after), but we also see it in the way queerness is depicted more broadly, filtered thru layers upon layers of white aesthetics, idealized white bodies, white masculinity/femininity/androgyny, etc, which only serves a white queer identity.

See so like here’s how I imagine the pitch for this new era of Doctor Who went

“We’re gonna start by bringing in david tennant for the third time and bring back an old companion from 15 years ago and continue her story, perfect jumping on point for new viewers. Then we’re gonna bring back this villain from 60 fucking years ago so the doctor can face off against him again! It’s a perfect jumping on point, I swear, stick with me. Then we’re also gonna bring back an old companion from 36 years ago as a side character. It’s a perfect new fresh point to get into the show. Then we’ll bring back a villain from 49 years ago and people will love that, a nice fresh start to doctor who with lots of new bad and evil villains. Then we’ll bring back Midnight!!! Oooo yes people love Midnight!!! That place from that one story 17 years ago!!! OOOO goodie!!! I can’t wait for the new fans to come along and see all this!!! And then! And then! We’ll bring back The Fugitive Doctor in a short cameo!! THE DISNEY+ VIEWERS WILL LOVE IT!!!! THEN- OH! OH! I almost forgot!!! SUSAN!!! The Doctor’s Grandaughter!!! She’s back! She’s back she’s back she’s back she’s BACK! It’s a joyous day for Doctor Who and my egomania!THEN, get this, THE RANI!!!! That one time lord villain who people last saw in a shitty children in need special!!! But she was good!! She was good!! People will love her and the disney+ viewers will really love it. AND THEN- to top it all off, we’ll bring back OMEGA. That 1 villain from an old multi doctor special who also last appeared 42 fucking years ago. Honestly Julie Gardner we’re on the precipice of a new GOLDEN ERA FOR THE SHOW!”

Murderbot as a ‘Cringe’ Litmus Test for the Audience (a.k.a., we are culturally the Corporation Rim)

One of the more interesting things I’ve seen in discussions of ‘Murderbot’ are how many people are not happy that the show made the Preservation team more explicitly hippies.  After all, per our current cultural zeitgeist, hippies are silly, over-earnest, over-feeling, over-EVERYTHING. Why is this team of scientists holding hands and humming?  Why are they taking breaks in the middle of a tense situation to reassure a colleague that they love him? Why do they stand around playing music and dancing during their downtime?  Why did the show make them “Cringe”?

And that got me thinking again about the current cultural antipathy toward sincerity and openness.  People who are seen as open and sincere beyond a fairly narrow scope of emotional expression are treated as deeply weird, off-putting, and most importantly for this conversation, as INCOMPETENT.  You can’t be goofy and competent.  You can’t believe in the power of love and friendship and holding hands and taking a dance break, and still be a good scientist.  You can’t have one of the unsexy sorts of mental health problems (panic disorder) and be a good leader.  In our current cultural moment, you have to be Cool.  You have to be unaffected by both the horrors of the world and the day-to-day joys.

I think that a lot of people see themselves in ‘The Murderbot Diaries’, and a lot of them understandably love the very anticapitalist tone of the books.  And they wanted Preservation to be Cool Space Communists.  Hypercompetent at all times, serious, without flaw.  Because any personal flaws might be taken as flaws in their cultural and political leanings, right?  And we can’t have silliness or goofiness or fun in our Communist Utopia, or people won’t take us seriously.

But to me, the tension is so much better, so much more real and human and FUN. And it makes the audience question their own implicit biases as much as SecUnit is going to have to contemplate its implicit biases.  This team is comprised of highly talented scientists from a culture that values emotions and, yes, activities that we the audience have been culturally trained to think are Cringe.  They do have a humming consensus circle—so that anyone in the team can have veto power over a decision that has major ramifications not only for a research project, but for their own ethics.  They do like to play music and dance when they’ve got some free time, even if that music would be considered embarrassing or offputting to outsiders.  They do openly love one another and support one another, even in—no, especially in—challenging times.  It’s good to have that tension, both to tell the story and to give the characters and the AUDIENCE an emotional and thematic arc.

Let’s use Dr. Mensah as a the best example so far of this tension. Mensah is a good leader.  In every scene where she’s with the group, she’s the heart of it.  She’s always weighing the fears, the thoughts, the feelings, and the arguments of her friends to come to a decision.  She doesn’t feel like Gurathin’s right about not trusting SecUnit, but she’s also very aware that he knows more about the Corporation Rim than she does, and that his arguments, while rooted in his fears, are rational.  So she ends up deciding that they’ll leave the SecUnit behind for their mission.

And it’s the wrong call. Going out to the dark site in the map without the SecUnit almost gets her killed. But her decision to climb the scree pile alone makes sense, because she doesn’t want to further endanger Bharadwaj, and if she doesn’t climb up there with her equipment, they won’t get important information about what’s going on with their survey data. And yes, while she’s climbing she has another panic attack. But she keeps climbing through it. Hell, she even takes a moment to encourage the teamwork between SecUnit and Gurathin, because that’s an important part of being their leader.  And, yes, they both roll their eyes because they still don’t like one another. But the important thing is that she’s created this sense of openness, of acceptance, of love.

Being a good leader doesn’t mean making the right call all the time.  It means learning from both right calls and wrong calls.  It means creating an environment where people can be wrong, and learn from their mistakes, and try again to get it right.  And it works!  Gurathin may roll his eyes, but he also has the space to apologize for getting it wrong. He has the space to fuck up and try again. And that is created by her encouragement, by her openness, by her caring even when it becomes embarrassing to a man raised in our culture the Corporation Rim, where open emotion is something to smirk at.

And when she’s alone, Mensah falls apart.  When no one can see her, she has panic attacks, because things are starting to go pear-shaped for these people she loves.  Because one of her dear friends nearly died, and she wasn’t there, and apparently that could happen at any time because their maps are faulty, and the only real rescue is an untrustworthy bond company that is a week away at best.  That’s a perfect recipe for a panic attack, but she hides them because she knows what she needs to be for her friends and colleagues.  She is the leader, and damned if she’s going to let something like her panic disorder stop her from doing that.

That’s not incompetent, that’s incredibly courageous.  Her bravery lies in being afraid and pushing through, not being flawless from the off.  The bravery and the competence and the things that eventually are going to win Murderbot over to loving these humans ARE their flaws and the fact that they don’t let those flaws stop them from trying to be the best people they can be, while also being true to a culture of being open and loving to the point that they can come across, to the jaded construct or audience member, as Cringe.

I think we’re going to see more and more of that as the show unfolds.  We’ve only just laid the groundwork, and established the initial impressions of all the characters.  They are being set up for arcs, and by electing to let the Preservation team be more out-there, more earnest, more Cringe, they’re setting the audience up for an arc too.

Anyway, loving the show, can’t wait for the DeltFall storyline to kick off tonight.  And I love this crew being highly-competent space hippies with realistic human flaws, who love and support one another.  In an unrelentingly Cool, Bleak, and Edgy television landscape, it really is nice to have kind characters be free to be their kooky selves without the show judging them for it.

our good (air)ship murderbot! thanks google

I love reading about these kind of translation decisions.

I’ve only ever seen 弊 used to refer to one’s company: 弊社, as the article says.

I’ve been told 弊 is used to refer to one’s own something, and it has a very humble nuance.

So 弊機 translates to something like “I, your humble machine” or “I, who am but a mere machine”.

Japanese is great that it can say so much with simple pronouns.

Romance language translator: well we don’t have a gender neutral pronoun so I guess we’ll flip a coin for male or female

Japanese language translator, an intellectual: none of Japanese’s 30-something plus personal pronoun options have the perfect vibes so I’ll create a new one to bring that special somethin’

What I found to be particularly clever about the coining of this very unique first person pronoun 弊機 (heiki) is that it’s a homophone of 兵器(heiki), meaning ‘weapon

#murderbot #the ‘our’ marker option as an implied holdover from company ownership is a genius choice #insight into murderbot’s view of its own personhood #simultaneously an independent being and 'liberated’ machine property OP @xcziel

I don’t think it would be challenging to make an image generator that “respects copyright” (you could train it on public domain art and photos but you could also license massive libraries of stock photos and TV shows and book/album covers etc. from the media companies that hold the rights to them) and I think the existence of such a generator would not lead people currently mad about AI to suddenly be cool with it because it’s really not about copyright.

machine-saint said: adobe and gettyimages in fact both have generators trained on their stock photo catalog!

machine-saint said: there’s also mitsua diffusion, which is trained on public domain/permissively-licensed art

cadmusfly said: @machine-saint there’s also CommonCanvas, an open source model that is apparently comparable in output quality to Stable Diffusion 2.0 and is Coming Out Soon ™

#huh#I do estimate some people are actually worried about job displacement#and the concern of intellectual property is more having to do with their assumption that otherwise#these models could not be created in the first place… but as far as I can see it would only delay it by max 5 years or so#the part where I pick some pics by a specific author to specifically replicate their style feels like a dick move#for the same reason people tracing art and passing it off as theirs is a dick move#but also this seems to be a separate thing from crawling the internet and picking everything that goes (via @mlembug)

I do think it’s worth noting that there are definitely some people explicitly taking the stance of “AI art through public domain and licensed datasets is fine but other kinds aren’t”, but I imagine it will be hard for that to hold up as a meaningful distinction in the long run. AI art will continue showing up in more and more places, with the more limited datasets still causing all the economic concerns people fear from the tool in general, and over time people trying to draw a line between “ethical AI art” and “unethical AI art” will have to figure out if their default assumption upon determining an image is AI art is one, the other, or neither.

It ends up not really being a stable position - as we saw with the whole antis situation, a reference point I keep finding pertinent. People would go “you can’t do these things in fiction unless you have an excuse” but they end up having to react to things without knowing an “excuse” is present, so they end up either tending to react with disgust or wariness and ending up spreading that uncharitableness to the whole category regardless, or relaxing and inevitably reaching the conclusion that it’s fine either way.

ultimately I think economic considerations will determine the outcome more than attitudes: if AI makes things cheaper and faster then damn right it’s going to get used everywhere.

I think this is kind of ignoring that art is always following taste. and taste has shifted to have anything that’s AI registered as being cheap or low quality. there is no assessment of quality without assessment of method. we have seen that artists whose style looks “kind of like ai” have seen a sudden drop in success because of the shared negative association. there’s a good likelihood that artistic direction in a lot of cases, even corporate one, will shift to a visual style that intentionally would be harder to AI generate to prove effort and therefore legitimacy

we always exist in a cultural context and there is not actually a neutral “just liking how something looks”. art doesn’t serve the purpose to look good at least not on a grand scale. it’s for self expression of course but arguably more important than that it’s point is to legitimize whatever it is attached to. status through skill or monetary means or connections. doing a fanart of something for example isn’t just producing another image of a character somehow. it’s expressing a thought and it’s expressing a connection of the artist to the work and giving the work more legitimacy by showing dedication to it and it’s giving more legitimacy to the artist by them displaying their skill. if there’s no skill, effort and means displayed that makes art in practice pointless. we see this to some degree with art we have no personal connection to and can only abstractly guess the context and effort. expressionist paintings and traditional church chants will do nothing for you if you don’t have a cultural connection to them. AI art being faster and cheaper makes it worth less. the value isn’t derived from isolated visual appeal. there’s an infinite amount of things that are nice to look at. with oil painting, simply paintings of landscapes are very cheap because they’re easy to do, even if they look very nice. with digital art, a detailed full render is held with higher regard than a simple sketch. not because of how much nicer it looks, but because of what it communicates

when we don’t like a show we don’t say “i don’t like how it looks”. we complain about cost cutting measures.

one way or another, art is a way to connect with people

mhm. luckily because this is the case i don’t think artists have to worry much in the long term. ai can be used in whatever ways and culture will dynamically respond and adjust the value of how it is used depending on association. i personally think it will largely disappear from foreground prominence in the next few years and probably be used as a cost-cutting measure in places where it’s not as obvious. we are currently in a time where taste is rapidly adjusting and after a while it’ll settle

much like the transition from hand drawn advertising to photograph based advertising, or the transition from hand drawn cel animation to computer animation, etc. etc.

Not to be That Bitch, but:

Me.

I’m the one who would still object.

You can train your AI entirely on images from 1743 and I will still be screaming about the environmental impact and the fact that you were too fucking lazy to think so you outsourced the thinking to a machine and want to pretend the result is on par with real artists who actually do the work.

the environmental impact is lower than getting humans to do the work and getting cheaper all the time, and the last Disney movie animated with old school cels was The Little Mermaid in 1989, technology moves on.

Every image generated by AI wastes 16 ounces of water.

And I frankly don’t give a shit what Disney does. In case you haven’t noticed, they’ve been horrible to their cast, crew, local environment, and customers forever and it’s only getting worse.

If “cheaper” is your goal, fine. Drench the world in shit. It’s not like we’re already oversaturated with it. This argument to me sounds no different than the people who ask me to make them a blanket for $30 because that’s what it would cost them to buy one at Walmart and then get mad when I tell them $30 wouldn’t even cover the yarn but unlike a Walmart blanket the ones I make will last for decades.

That stat doesn’t sound real.

Specifically, how does AI waste water? The cooling? That’s a closed loop, the 16 ounces get recirculated until they evaporate and return to the water cycle. It’s not wasted, you cannot waste it, thermodynamics make it so it always returns to nature. Lots of sensationalist media are trying to make it sound like that water is disintegrated and leaves the planet immediately.

Beyond that, it’s getting more efficient over time. Complaining that it’s inefficient and hating it forever is like never wanted to get in a car because the Ford T puts out too much exhaust. They’re not always going to be that bad, obviously earlier models are inefficient, that’s just how technological development goes. First you make a big, bulky, wasteful thing that gets the job done and then you refine it over time until achieving maximum efficiency. We’ve been doing that since the wheel.

Also, the development of energy consuming technology is in itself a driving factor for its efficiency improving. Right now Microsoft is in talks to fund a nuclear power plant to feed its AI, meaning eventually all their output can be pulled out of the grid. Google just developed a more efficient multiplication method that will over time make computer hardware as a whole less wasteful. Solar panels keep getting cheaper and developing new tech dependent on more abundant elements to counteract rare metal mining, because rare metals are expensive and companies would prefer not having to pay for them. Everyone is working towards cheaper, more efficient AI because they benefit from cutting energy costs as much as possible.

As for copyright, yes, it will eventually be indistinguishable and arguably already is. That’s not an argument against AI; it’s an argument against copyright. We found an unpatchable leak in the system, and the only way around it is to forgo copyright altogether. That is a good thing. It will have to happen within our lifetime.

We are being asked to reexamine our definition of art. The conversation cannot begin and end with “latex paint is bad for the environment”.

that statistic is absolutely not real because you can generate dozens of AI images on your laptop without filling it with water.

and you can do so while using less energy than someone would need to spend an hour drawing in photoshop

I think it was very much a strategic mistake to base opposition to AI imagery on its energy consumption!

The best and only real criticism is the fact that it further alienates the worker from their labor and its products. All those companies investing in AI are just attempting to get in on a corporate power grab to decrease worker power, they do not care about anything else.

We should be focusing on that when it comes to the “why is generative AI bad?” conversations.

Let’s play Spot the Difference!

Now, I know what most of you are already thinking: “Not Lilo & Stitch again, Geeky!”

Look, I get it, I’m beating a dead horse with this “anti remake” stance, but I NEED to get this one off my chest.

These two posters here may look similar, but they each tell a completely different message.

Notice how the 2002 poster (left picture) shows Stitch gleefully sitting in the center of a blank white canvas, and a tagline above him that reads There’s one in every family? Top that off with various characters from past Disney films looking on in utter shock/confusion/disbelief.

Then there’s the 2025 poster for the live-action remake (right picture), which just shows Stitch hoarding all the Disney IPs like a greedy dragon would hoard a cave full of treasure.

What does this say about each film? Well, I’ll tell you:

The 2002 poster is basically saying: “Hey kids, remember all the wonderful characters from those other Disney movies that stuck with you? Well, check out this funky little dude! His name is Stitch! He’s a bit of an oddball, and a troublemaker, but you’re gonna love him once you see our latest movie this summer!”

Meanwhile, the 2025 poster’s like: “Hey, kids! Guess what? We own everything now, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Now give us your money and buy our new live-action Stitch merchandise!”

In short, the 2002 poster feels like a sincere and honest preview for a new Disney classic, while the 2025 poster feels corporate, arrogant and obnoxious. I miss the old Disney!

seems like black trans people are only thrown on the back burner until it’s time to use our existence in an argument and then talk over us until we get hate-crimed and killed and then #saytheirname and cycle repeat!

I’ve seen this a lot and even within my own spaces and closeness with others. it makes me feel bad ngl.

forgive me if I’m speaking too brash but white trans women aren’t the only people who get smear campaign’d and systemically fucked over infact there are women just like them except they’re black trans women who are often left behind when they experience this. I’ve met a handful of black transfems who’ve explained how their treatment from white queers is fucking abhorrent and I agree.

and I’ve also faced really horrific harassment campaigns, pedojacketing me and holding other shit I did over my head despite moving on. not because I’m a trans man, but because I’m BLACK. a black man who overlaps with other marginalized identities. yet the same people who talk about why this is bad didn’t give a shit and even joined in on socially treating me like I’m poison.

hopefully my words make people understand. I’m not good at wording stuff I’m just bitter that barely anyone talks about it, and when they do it’s only a brief mention.

hey I think you should look at this version ^^^

it’s frustrating seeing white queers act like they are the saints of all scrutiny and then do the same exact shit to their black counterparts.

ID: a screenshot from tumblr user oposssumsaucee that says: "Listen All Systems Red is so so funny from Gurathins perspective imagine you grew up with Space Socialism and was hired to go help some pal with science but you weren't allowed to go unless you rented AmaTeslas Torment Nexus Alexa Dot and then when you get there you find out a whole continent of people got annihilated by their Tourment Nexus rentals so you take a moment to check yours quickly and find out it already had disengaged its Don't Kill People box, the only thing you've ever been told prevented them from mass homiciding their clients, something that LITERALLY just happened to people you knew a day ago, and when you say to your fellow socialist doctors HEY I think our Tourment Nexus is fucked up and it's files said it killed dozens of people barely a year ago and we should probably get the hell away from it the same doctors are like look at what you're saying. You're hurting the Tourment Nexus' feelings. The Tourment Nexus is just a little construct who likes Netflix Gurathin stop antagonizing it on the plane ride." Then the post is reblogged by therealbeachfox and adds: "Meanwhile the Torment Nexus is sitting there going "I'd like to say this guy is an asshole for worrying about me murdering everyone considering I don't want to murder anyone because of Free Will but also Crippling Social Anxiety/PTSD, but there was that whole murder spree I did, and I totally could if I wanted to, even if I don't, so maybe a little caution around your mass-murdering Torment Nexus wouldn't be out of line, also why are you still talking to me about it you aren't supposed to talk to your Torment Nexus or look directly at your Torment Nexus. I'm going to shut down my visual systems and just watch all of this through the security cameras if that's okay with you and also if is isn't okay with you. AmazTesla Torment Nexus Alexa, Powered by Google(tm) out." " END ID.ALT

Three panel comic with crudely drawn stick people.

Panel 1: a lime green person and a grass green person wearing a baseball cap ang big, round glasses are walking down a street.

Grass: “Look. I get it. You think I’m paranoid. And that I need to touch grass. But this is my part of town. There is no grass here.

You think you know misoviridy, you haven’t seen the half of it. It’s fucked over here.”

Lime: “Sure, in what way though”

Panel 2: Grass looks concerned as they explain to Lime.

Grass: “Well um. Some. And to be absolutely clear I do mean some, not all and not most, a subset, a particular, specific group of nongreen chromatic people in this area.”

Lime: “Uh-”

Grass: “Those individuals in particular are prone to, sometimes, not as some intrinsic trait but rather as a behavioral tendency that they are actively choosing to partake in, um,

Misoviridic harassment. Over very, very little provocation.”

Panel 3: A crowd of five people color picked from Tumblr’s dashboard buttons surround the two. Grass Green lays in the fetal position while Lime keeps standing.

Photo Red: “Hey what the fuck is your problem, you raging æverthe?”

Video Pink: “I actually proudly hate green people. Just to be clear.”

Audio Blue: “How dare you say all red and/or blue people are murderers?”

Chat Blue: “We’re a very welcoming community fuck you!”

Quote Orange: “I just have some concerns about the thing you just said, such as the claim that all nongreen people are misoviridic. if you didn’t mean that all nongreen people are misoviridic you should’ve clarified-”

Lime: “They did clarify that!”

Quote Orange: “It’s actually very presumptuous of you to expect that I can know ahead of time that the words in the sentence are there on purpose? This is very primarist of you.”
