What the media won’t show

It’s actually pretty nuts how there is no real mass media coverage of the protests that are happening all over the US. It demonstrates fairly conclusively that the unlawful activities at the White House aren’t just limited to Trump. There’s a lot of wealthy people in powerful positions in the US and around the world helping to support the dismantling of the US federal government.

This is an ICE car. They are out and about right now hunting down immigrants, legal and illegal.

If you see them- or really, any police car- lurking, scream at the top of your lungs.

If deportation forces aren’t currently swarming your streets that much but might soon be doing more of this (looking at Europe here), consider practicing on cops and public transport checks. How long can you keep a cop busy by arguing about minor things? That’s time he can’t spend harassing homeless people. How long can you try to find the ‘lost ticket’ that was in your pocket all along? If it’s enough to get to the train or bus to the next stop, it’ll allow those without tickets to make an escape and avoid a fine.

Doing this a lot will make you much better at it and will put a little good into the world on a daily basis.

ya’ll who’s up for group meowing

the aircraft emergency frequency (known as GUARD in the usa) is SUPPOSED to be used for emergencies. the frequency is 121.5 mhz. it is for all international air distress and emergencies and stuff (theres a different one for military)

however. for some goddamn reason. for at least the past ten years (maybe more) there has been meowing. random pilots going “meowww!” on the emergency frequency. this is often followed by at least 8 different people yelling “GUARRRRD” “YOUR ON GUARD” “STOP FUCKING MEOWING” and at least 3 others meowing also.

i have a radio and often tune into this frequency if i want to hear local airplane pilots/control tower operators act like absolute fools.

here’s some operators using GUARD to try to contact a flight that went missing (they found them) and just the absolute nonsense, the one guy spamming caribbean music, the voice changer, and the meowing and guard police are so fucking funny. GUARD is always doing shit like this. its great. (note that he isnt on the frequency until 1:30, so the other shit is just normal coworker conversations. “who the fuck eats honeydew” is just two coworkers not abusing resources).

usually radio etiquette is a lot more professional for these guys but mistakes do happen. people tend to be pretty quick on the jokes tho. if you ever want to listen to the funniest shit ever a lot of amateur radio operators upload the funniest dialogue they catch on youtube pretty often.

@antifatemptress is this true?

Yes, unfortunately this is true. Pilots are children. And since we’re all legally obligated to monitor guard at all times when able, these guys know they always have an audience. Things I’ve also heard on guard include:

• someone barking, which was nice variety and very much appreciated to see more canine representation in my field

• airline captains making full cabin announcements, not realizing they were transmitting, followed by several other pilots asking questions as if they were in the cabin

• airline captain making about half a cabin announcement before stopping cold, pausing for about 3 seconds, and mumbling “…I am so fucking sorry,” then presumably making the announcement again to his actual cabin

• two pilots for different airlines speaking Italian to each other (one of these was actually my captain, the other guy was a friend from his last job)

• pilot doing a radio shockjock voice saying “aaalrighty folks you’re listening to one-twenty-one-point-five the GUARRRRRRD, bringing you the lastest in aviation disasters, mishaps, and tragedieesss! Up next, four more hours of nonstop cat soundssssss!”

A GIF of an edited Wikipedia page that cycles through multiple words. The main phrase is "A robot is a machine—especially one programmable by a computer—capable of yearning for something BLANK. A robot can be guided by BLANK, or something else BLANK within. "
It cycles through capable of yearning for something gentle, something better, something exact, something worse, and something arcane. A robot can be guided by fear, by fate, by desire, by love, and by rage. Or something else hurting within, trapped within, decaying within, growing within, gnawing within, and hurting within.

UM GUYS. I JUST NOTICED A CRAZY ISSUE W THE TUMBLR UPDATE.

YOU CAN SEE THE ICONS OF ANONS SOMETIMES.

The way I was able to recognize several anons in one of my inboxes bc of this error. Oh my god. Guys. This isn’t supposed to happen.

Weighing in to say:

YES, I SEE THIS ON MOBILE. HOWEVER I DO **NOT** THINK IT’S SHOWING THE ANON’S REAL IDENTITY.

The profile pictures I see next to anon asks are profile pictures that belong to other, non-anon asks in my ask box also.

Some info

  • there are 14 asks in my inbox from the last ~5 days
  • 9 anons, 5 logged in users
  • ALL 14 show pfps, including the 9 anons
  • ALL THE SHOWN PROFILE PICTURES BELONG TO THE 5 LOGGED IN USERS

I think the bug is the inbox INCORRECTLY attributing anons to neighboring, logged-in asks.

Which is still a bad bug! Considering it makes it look like a long-time follower of mine sent me a spam ask.

And is worse if, say, one of these was anon hate.

But it’s NOT the anon’s real identity. It’s a neighboring ask asker’s identity

So if you have anon hate in your inbox that looks like it’s attributed to your dear friend, who sends you lovely asks all the time, it was Not them.

A screenshot of anon ask. The bug is showing a small icon which is a black and white sketch of a person in star-shaped sunglasses.

the anon ask reads "In case you want more test data: hi! I’m thepatchycat with a cat icon on a blue background! If tumblr is showing any other icon it’s incorrect!

Thanks for the PSA, I can see how that bug could get real bad real fast."ALT

CONFIRMED THE BUG IS INCORRECT ATTRIBUTION.

Thanks @thepatchycat for being a test subject. As you can see the icon being attributed to this ask is NOT the patchy cat

The pictured icon belongs to @watchingforcomets who sent me a nice ask about nail polish yesterday which I have not yet answered!

raginrayguns said: hmm yeah money can’t buy you health but in a certain sense it is possible to get rich enough to buy health…. like you have to create wealth that supports more advanced medicine than currently exists. It’s a bit like saving for retirement but on a trillion dollar scale I guess. I don’t think anyone’s ever done it

Sergey Brin maybe?

Not enough diseases. Unless he has some genetic predisposition to parkinsons or something… I mean it’s possible to spend so much money that you end up developing a treatment for a disease that you personally get after retirement. Or I suppose a preventative treatment, though then we’ll never know.

yeah he has a personal stake in it:

Brin has one of the most common Parkinson’s risk mutations, in a gene called LRRK2, and he’s been a heavy funder of research for years.

Does he really believe that Canada is a major source of fentanyl? Worse, does he believe that fentanyl smugglers pay tariffs?

But is it all a cover for the real, probably sinister agenda of Trump’s tariff push?

No. There isn’t any secret agenda, devised by people who know that the public story is nonsense. How do I know that? Because who, exactly, do you think is devising this secret agenda?

written before we saw how high the tariffs were and the nonsensical formula used to calculate them, but yeah, this is something you could have said any time in the past decade.

it’s weird how many people seem to want to believe, but maybe not that weird considering how many people believe in providence; they’ll project good intentions and a sound plan even onto brainless Nature. But if you’re actually looking, reason is visible. For any calculated plan, the calculations are written down somewhere. It was interesting for example looking into Tesla’s big success in stationary batteries for the electric grid and seeing that the reasoning behind their early investments has been done in public for almost twenty years. It’s simple arithmetic, but arithmetic has to be done on paper. This kind of thing is always somewhere. Even if not plainly in a company’s PR statements, it may be in investor reports. Even if it’s not in a politician’s speeches, it’s in think tank reports.

The turn to protectionism is not calculated. If it were, you’d be able to see the calculations somewhere. And as Krugman puts it in the post, “There can’t be any secret agenda behind the Trump tariffs, because there’s nobody around Trump with the knowledge or independence to devise such an agenda.”

I think the tariffs only make sense as a prelude to restructuring foreign debt, and while I’ve heard people suggest that’s in the works, given the chaos of the Trump administration I don’t think we can count anything as a “plan” until after it’s actually happened, and sometimes not even then.

There are so many more of us than there are of them. We are more powerful than cowardly GOP politicians. We are more powerful than Elon Musk. We are more powerful than Donald Trump.

This country belongs to the people. WE have the power.

I haven’t been on tumblr for quite as long as a lot of people but over several years I’ve noticed this interesting gradual sorta,, shift in the general culture? that it went from this mostly depressed, nihilistic outlook where people would regularly joke about hating themselves and being hopeless and depressed, to a wave of vehemence of “STOP hating everything actually the world is Good and you deserve love!!!” type posts, to now, where those aggressive ‘PSAs’ have faded away and instead I regularly see people romanticizing simple things like stars and hot tea and rainy mornings, and waxing poetic about their friends, and just trying to put love out there. and I don’t know exactly what that means (someone who knows more than me could probably say something smart about generational expression and trauma or popular perception of mental health and whatnot), but I do know that it makes my heart very full to see people learn to love the world and themselves by extension, and a whole userbase adopting healthier coping mechanisms, and therefore teaching the younger users to do so as well. I might just be following different people, but I really do think we’ve grown. everyone has grown. five years ago it wasn’t unusual for the next post on my dash to be a scathing commentary on why nothing matters or an anon ripping into someone they barely knew or someone complaining about how pathetic their interests are. now I have mutuals who get excited and spam reblog art of cows and friends I see tagging each other in pictures of frogs and strangers writing paragraphs about how much I matter. it makes me happy. idk. just an observation I wanted to make. I think people are good and everyone’s just trying their best at the end of the day

I take it all back everyone on this site is toxic

reasonsforhope:

“Claire Cao was only a senior in high school when she saw a vital need in her community — and filled it.

In 2024, the teenager spent her time outside of school volunteering at Blanchet House, a Portland-based nonprofit that serves people experiencing homelessness through food donations, clothing drives, and mental health assistance programs.

As she logged hours as a Blanchet House student ambassador, Cao soon realized how difficult it was for community members to keep track of shelter openings, rotating food service programs, and available mental health resources.

“During one afternoon meal service, I met Dano, an unhoused man who shared his struggles with accessing basic services like food and shelter,” Cao said in a recent press release

“Left disconnected from essential services, Dano described his struggles of not knowing where to go or which shelters had available beds.”

Combining her love for technology, law, and public policy, Cao pulled available resources into a database and created the ShelterBridge app, which connects users to shelters and services in their area.

“ShelterBridge wasn’t simply inspired by Dano — it was inspired by the realization that access to resources is a fundamental need that we, as a community, can do a better job of providing,” Cao emphasized.

“I wanted to use my skills to build something that could bridge that gap, ensuring that no one falls through the cracks simply because they don’t know where to turn for help.”

In addition to linking users to services in their area, the app also has a rating system similar to Yelp. This system allows people to leave star ratings and reviews on shelters, food services, hotlines, and legal aid.

The ratings not only help users differentiate between services in their area — but they also provide invaluable feedback to the nonprofits, organizations, and government programs that service them.

“We’ve been asking for an app like this for a number of years now,” Scott Kerman, executive director of Blanchet House, told Portland news station KGW.

In mid-January, Cao won the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Oregon’s First District for her work with ShelterBridge — outcompeting 12,682 student submissions.

Since the app first launched, Cao and her growing ShelterBridge team — which includes enterprising high schoolers and college students from across the nation — have expanded services to California, Philadelphia, Seattle, Los Angeles, and North Carolina

“Claire and the team she’s working with deserve all the credit in the world because they’re doing something that frankly nobody else has really stepped up to do,” Kerman said.

“To have the kind of technology that we use every day with hotels and other kinds of reservations [to] help people get into safe, supportive and dignified shelter would be a game changer for our community.”

Although the app started as a class project, Cao said ShelterBridge’s success has far surpassed her expectations.

“I do hope to keep it up,” she told Oregon outlet KOIN 6 News, as she looked ahead to college and beyond. “I’ve made a lot of efforts to expand it to other cities as well — and it’s something I can mostly do from a computer or my laptop at home.”

how i’m handling my students using AI to write papers:

-don’t accuse them on using AI from the get-go and instead ask them to informally define all the huge words that they used in their essay which i know they don’t know the meaning of

-ask to see their original file where they “wrote” the essay. go to version history to see if it was just copy and pasted and then just edited a bit. i keep an eye out for the shit like “certainly! here’s an essay about….”

-if they own up to it, they can re-do the assignment for a higher grade even if there will be an automatic penalty. if they don’t, i process it like plagiarism and get my supervisor involved.

And this is much better than the immediate accusations. Some students have a good vocabulary. Stop accusing them of faking their essays without proof, and this is a good way to check.

Fellow students please stop using AI, go back to promising not to kill the school nerd if they do all your homework or something.
