One of my friends is a piano tuner. Her dream, or at least her parents’ dream, was to be a concert pianist. Turns out she liked messing with the mechanisms more than she liked memorizing songs. It also turns out that “decent piano tuner” pays a lot more than “failed concert pianist,” which helped convince her parents as well.
In the same way, I don’t think there’s any shame in being a race car driver’s mechanic. Racing is a team effort. Everyone on that team has to contribute as best they can. From the crew chief who remembers things like “what weekend the race is on,” to the intern who puts air in the tires of the car-hauling trailer, they can all share in a victory.
Thing is, the media likes a hero. It’s hard to do a story about a whole bunch of people doing their job properly. Not much drama in it. They think we want to see a radical, a loner, a real protagonist. Even the TV news likes to ensure the happenings of the world are conveyed to you entirely by a cabal of all-knowing, handsome talking heads. More heroes, selling you the story of other heroes.
Those people don’t really exist, and when they do, they’re kind of unpleasant because they won’t help you with your shit. Race cars need mechanics; concert pianists need tuners; everyone needs somebody.
That’s why I’ve decided to more flagrantly violate the traffic laws. It’s only by stretching these laws to their maximum that the lawmakers will truly appreciate the hard work of the dedicated civil servants who anticipated things like not letting me pull my Volare with a bunch of sled dogs. And if I do manage to find something new, they will all get a great opportunity to come together as a team and ban it. No need to thank me; just doing my part.

I had a dream that I went to heaven and heaven had its own heaven-exclusive tv shows that were written and produced there in heaven and they showed me the most popular show in heaven and it was this really beautiful drama and, at the end of the episode, the credits said “Created by Mike Ehrmantraut” and they were like “oh yeah. fictional characters who die in earth media go to real heaven” and I’m like “sure but mike did some pretty fucked up stuff, wouldn’t he go to hell?” and they’re like “no, all the fucked up things he did were fictional. people only get judged for the real things they do and the only thing mike really did was bring joy to millions of viewers” and i think that’s beautiful

but yes, i do think “people like rapists” can become better people. their victims are not obligated to forgive them. their victims should not ever have to be anywhere near them, nor should they be allowed near their victims, unless for whatever reason said victims are engaging on their own for their own reasons
i do not believe in punitive justice. i do not believe that a person is Simply Bad or Permanently Bad. that is the kind of heavily christian-poisoned mindset that leads a lot of the insanity in this world and pure black and white thinking will not only hurt others but it will hurt you
allowing someone to improve themselves and also holding them accountable for what they’ve done is in fact something you can do. one does not cancel out the other.
if a rapist has realized what they did was terrible, and they wish to never do that again, and try and do better in this world, that is something they should be allowed to do.
if you are the kind of person who says ACAB and believes in prison abolition, which you may or may not be, you need to come to terms with the fact that that means people who have done terrible, unforgivable things, are going to be allowed to try and be better
i sincerely recommend looking into restorative justice if it is something that you have any investment in
this is the first anon hate i’ve gotten in several years. i was a little startled to open my tumblr and see someone telling me to jump off a bridge. when i allowed anon on my blog years ago, it was with the intent that ppl who were anxious or shy would not feel afraid to talk to me, but with the caveat that if anyone sent me anon hate, it would be turned off.

one of my favorite (read: least favorite) things about how people treat cleopatra is she’s so often called a slut or is only ever portrayed as being this incredibly sexy, often scantily-clad seductress, when in actuality 1. while some ancient sources describe her as somewhat pretty, it generally seems that what was attractive about her was her intellect, charm, and voice, and the sources that refer to her as extremely sexy/slutty are specifically out to condem her, 2. she was a brilliant politician who chose her affairs as a way of securing power for her country and not just so she could have a bunch of sex (which shouldn’t be an issue anyway), and 3. one of the men she had an affair with was mark antony, ancient roman super slut supreme, a man known for his love of sex and tendency to wear extremely short tunics for the sake of showing off his sexy legs/probably also his dick
