i hold werewolves as both a symbol of transformation and of self-actualization; they are the other, and the beast, and they are us. this art was created for october’s print club; it was also created for me (and for you).
Had the funniest kid on a field trip today who had obviously been on my tour before but wouldn’t fess up to it and instead just pretended to be deducing and intuiting the answer to every question on the spot. I didn’t rat him out because I didn’t want to embarrass him and because I was really impressed with his recall. He’d clearly learned and retained a lot and I was flattered!
I was like “does anyone know why fire might be important to a prairie ecosystem?” and he raised his and said, with this theatrically exaggerated air of thoughtful consideration: “I think it might be because many native prairie plants have deep roots and keep most of their biomass safe beneath the soil, so that when a fire burns the dead plant matter above ground, the roots stay alive and can grow back stronger on the nutrients from the fire?”
like yeah dude it’s like you read my mind or are receiving my whole spiel from memory with suspiciously exact phrasing… good job
people keep tagging this Tim Drake and I’m trying to wrap my head around the concept of “Batfam, but they’re public park rangers”
Hidden object games are a fascinating demonstration of the arbitrariness of genre as a marketing tool because sometimes a game with “hidden object” on the cover is basically a digital version of Where’s Waldo, and sometimes a game with “hidden object” on the cover is a full-featured point and click adventure game that just doesn’t call itself that because its target audience is your middle-aged mom and the phrase “adventure game” doesn’t sell for that demographic, and there’s absolutely no way to predict from looking at the promotional material which of those it’s going to be.
I love nonfiction that I simply cannot relate to at all. “it’s easy to get addicted to buying fast fashion! I used to spend thousands of dollars on it a year!” okay. you’re a space alien.
Why do we constantly have to have “humans get transported to another world” storylines when it comes to live action adaptations? Why can’t it just be in-media-res? Why can’t the Minecraft movie follow the novelization where a guy randomly awakens in Minecraft with no idea who he is and just needs to learn how to survive… you know… LIKE HOW THE GAME IS. Why do we gotta bring people from outside the game world into Minecraft? Why do they look human but everything else is a CGI nightmare? You couldn’t pull a Detective Pikachu and just set your god damn plot IN Minecraft from the start?
And most importantly …
WHY CAN’T THE WHOLE MOVIE JUST BE ANIMATED? You’re already animating like 95% of the film already, just fucking make an animated film.
This comic from Lilo the Autistic Queer (@A_Silent_Queer on Twitter) made me smile today. There is no one way to look trans, and no one way to transition. However you choose to express your authentic self is good and doing what makes you happy regardless of what cis people think is good.
when i say i’m from ukraine, people assume i live somewhere else now. when i say i live in ukraine, they assume i’m somehow immune to war, and there’s a logical division between a ukrainian they chat with on discord and a ukrainian on the news. bitches my yaoi is written from the bomb shelter
Just an ordinary day in Ukraine. You live on the very edge of being killed at any moment.
In case foreign people wonder how is it possible to keep living under attacks. Well, I remind you air defence systems work. But that doesn’t normalise the existence of course.
The tag is awesome, I apply it to everything I draw.
one of the formative memories from war for me was when i was having a work meeting and someone asked “hey Coffee, what’s that odd noise in your background? can you tune it off?” and my sleep deprived self cheery replied “sorry, this is shooting and detonation from an air raid, I can mute myself if it’s too noticeable, I’m almost done with this report”.
for me, it was so common it was… well. just there. only when the meeting fell into shocked silenceand then i received a couple of questions i realized that people just assumed “i’m from Ukraine” doesn’t actually mean “i’m in Ukraine still”
also yeah, creating something to keep oneself sane is very, very, very crucial nowadays…
also keeping on living is the best fuck you to ruzzians considering they want us all dead
I think the reason that social media has become as toxic as it is, is because a lot of people view accounts as the person, and not just some journal where the person occasionally jots down an incomplete thought.
Like, not every post is an eternal, declarative manifesto. Some of us are just thinking out loud, Mary.
Just because you have a window into my soul doesn’t mean you know the entire floor plan.
The inscription probably doesn’t help much, but it’s something. I love these guys, but they killed me several times when I interrupted their meal with poor lizards.
“depiction is not automatically glorification” can and should coexist with “some depiction is glorification and you need to be able to tell the difference”
Please add to that list “apparent glorification in the first 15% of the thing does not constitute real glorification if the remaining 85% is dedicated to suffering the consequences, deconstructing the damage and changing ways” because some people around here don’t understand how the three act structure works.
Y'know yeah i will absolutely add this especially since people keep saying fight club is an example of glorification. Genuinely thanks for having one of the few good additions to this post
as Pettis keeps pointing out, everything looks good when prices are going up, then it turns out that many laws have been broken once the prices start going down, but it wasn’t really the law breaking that was the problem.
Is there any substantive difference between how it works in China and in America? It seems like white collar criminals in the US also only get busted when the scam goes bust and prices start to go down rather than up.
the details differ but yes the same general principle applies to all financial markets generally I think, nobody wants to look too closely when everybody thinks they’re getting rich and then later when it all evaporates everyone gets mad about it.
tbh no april fools gag tumblr ever pulls will ever be as good as the lizard election of 2016 staff put more effort into that than the rest of this website combined and it shows
for those of you who werent here in 2016 on april fools that year the entire fucking website was transformed and there was an election for a position that wasnt even ever specified and the candidates were four lizards (or three lizards and a salamander as a scandal would later prove) and it was called decision2016
each lizard had their own 3d models and tumblr blog and campaign and there was also a tumblr blog dedicated to reporting on the election and they made like whole ass news broadcasts with a guy in front of a green screen
you could vote for your favorite candidate and there was a built-in function that let you make and post a campaign poster
in case anyone was wondering the winner of the election was mop. relatable and reliable. #Mop Could
lest we forget
This was absolutely the biggest April Fools effort I ever witnessed while on staff. I already posted about this in an ask but here’s more of the shit that went down behind the scenes.
- Like all April Fools, this was done entirely through volunteer work on Staff. No one was forced to work on April Fools, it’s always employee-initiated and driven, even if it needs approval from leadership.
- The prank almost didn’t go through because leadership felt that the lizards weren’t relatable enough, so the compromise was to give them hats.
- The video updates on the Decision 2016 blog were greenscreen Fiverr actors that were all recorded months? Weeks? in advance? I wasn’t on creative so I don’t know all the deets about how those were made.
- As mentioned in my post, the victory speech by Mop was one of our designers screaming as loud as she could in a closet near the end of the day. The full audio was never posted but staff kept passing around the scream on slack and laughing about it for months afterwards
- There was a “war room” dedicated to advancing the election narrative as votes came in, posting updates in real time and also pushing changes to code as necessary (for bug fixes and what not)
- The votes were real and the “election” was decided by real users, even if the graphics and whatnot were exaggerated for comical effect. Mop won because Mop won. Democracy at work
- Someone brought in their own lizard to celebrate the proceedings. It was a bearded dragon
- This was the culmination of what was probably the most cohesive and imaginative (and largest) creative team Tumblr ever had. Unfortunately almost all of them are now long gone, and Tumblr Creative is now just a skeleton crew compared to their peak
- Wretched Tooth Doesn’t Like To Talk About Himself
- People drew porn of the lizards and posted it on Tumblr. Staff saw it and were sending it to each other on the company Slack. We thought it was great. I mean, terrifying, but great
- This picture of David Karp is my favorite photo of David Karp I have on my phone
a whole chapter of my tumblr memoir will be “lizard election 2016”
it was the first project i ever led myself, and i thought i’d be fired for sure by the end of it. completely worth it. would do it all again.
my only regret, echoed by @zacksultan and a few of the other creatives, was that we didn’t get BuzzFeed and other press in the war room with us at the time. it was magical.
i have a new theory called alive internet theory where i propose that the internet is full of real people and you can befriend some of them even and maybe actually kiss them and more
Daily reminder: Transphobia actively contributes to sexism. If you don’t fit the beauty standard and are seen as masculine in any way shape or form, you are seen as transgender and as a “problem”
I think it’s incredibly important here to not overlook the fact that she is a Black woman. Transphobia, racism, and sexism overlap significantly because of the incredibly eurocentric beauty standards women are judged on.
because I’m about to be on the job market, I’m like very aware of how good it would feel to believe in this MAGA stuff, at least until the promised revival of manufacturing just doesn’t happen
like idk if the MAGA people really get that
If you keep out imports, domestic manufacturing doesn’t have to raise production. They can just raise prices. I think some have noticed this and don’t like it, but idk what they’ll do about it.
You’re probably not going to incentivize a firm to invest in manufacturing by putting tariffs on their suppliers.
The kind of people who get an extra x% efficiency out of chemical vapor deposition in Asia tend to try and make a billion dollar app here, and who can blame them? Even Elon Musk went and became a dotcom millionaire first.
But it doesn’t take any explicit agreement for domestic companies to raise prices when the overseas competing product has gone up like 30% or more. It’s not illegal to do it, just to talk about it
you can ban prosecute an oligopoly for making an explicit cartel agreement, but you can’t legally compel them to “vigorously compete”
yeah a typical cartel of say a dozen organisations requires regular meetings in the stereotypical smoke-filled rooms to figure out exactly how best to stiff consumers – how many members does OPEC have, oh huh exactly twelve, neat – but if market concentration whittles that cartel down to two or three “competitors”, well it’s easy enough for them to keep an eye on each other and “compete” in ways that don’t involve cutting prices without any need to explicitly coordinate at all!
“can we normalize-” NO!!!!!! we do not need to expand whats considered normal!!! we need to teach people to stop reacting judgmentally when encountering something new and weird!!!! things dont need to be normal to be respected!!!!!!!!!!

the thing about using modern labels to describe and delimit historical identities and relationships is that it implies that modern labels describe all of the types of identities and relationships that are possible for people to have. but actually there were more possibilities in the past and there are more possibilities in the present and the future than those that can be neatly defined and put into our current limited boxes. allowing ambiguity in isn’t about denying possibility or solidarity or history, it’s about embracing it
people are getting high as fuck on new stupid drug called “night drawing” its making them stay iup all the goddamn night drawing. and brother let me tell you. the drawings. not even good
