“Kill shelters” are the shelters you need to donate to.

“Kill shelter” is a colloquial term used primarily for Town/City (aka municipal) shelters that rely on incredibly limited government grant funding to operate.
These shelters, by the very nature of their existence, DO NOT HAVE the funds to operate like private rescues do.
On top of this, they’re also *legally required* to take in ANY animal that comes to them. Even if they’re full. Or they’ll lose all of their funding.
This is what leads them to needing to euthanize for space. Is euthanizing for space sad? Yes. But due to the current crisis, it’s also NECESSARY.
These shelters are constantly overfull. They’re STRUGGLING. They don’t have the funds to operate properly. And yet these municipal, government funded, struggling shelters are the same ones that are most likely to be providing care for owned animals in the community
Municipal (“kill”) shelters are the ones hosting low cost spay and neuter clinics. They’re the ones discounting vaccination appointments and microchipping. They’re the ones that have pet food banks so struggling pet owners can feed their pets that week.
These shelters are not evil. They’re doing the absolute best they can with the bare minimum funding they get.
These people are incredibly resourceful and care very deeply about the animals in their care. It breaks their heart every time they have to euthanize an animal that couldn’t get adopted.
These underfunded shelters need your money significantly more than that fancy private rescue you see on TikTok or instagram that has a beautiful facility and has never had to euthanize an animal ever.
Support your local shelters and they will give back to the community thousand fold.

My favorite thing about this is that the “traditional” woman isn’t always on the left. By switching it up the artist is really committing to the idea that the right way for a woman to be is however she wants.

hey if you wanna be an ally to aromantic people listen up: you need to start looking for subtle arophobia in posts. Because it feels like aro people are the only ones to notice when a post is targeting aro people without saying it.
Like, a post about how “love is everything and if you read that as "romantic love is everything” you’re stupid and missing the point"? That’s generally targeting the discussion around loveless aros and how many aromantics are uncomfortable with the usage of the word “love”. The post isn’t gonna directly target aros (because aros are chronically invisible and seen as childish and not real), but aros who see that are going to know that the op of that post doesn’t respect aromantics and doesn’t like us discussing our own experiences, and thinks our opinions and terms are stupid and immature.
Like, I’ve seen so. many. posts. clearly referencing aromantic community discussions that get passed around eagerly by people, because nobody fucking talks about aromantics in the queer community. Nobody outside of our community cares about red flags or amatonormativity, or, i don’t know, taking our feelings on the word “love” seriously and not mocking us for our terms.
Like, I am begging you at this point. Please start listening to aromantics. Listen to our conversations and our theories on amatonormativity. Our community is valuable and our experiences matter just as much as every other queer persons.
@dullahandame absolutely amazing tags, and I really like that you brought up how aros are more likely to examine the concept of love than alloros.
I think most people understand how trans people, by virtue of having to question our own genders, generally have a deeper understanding of gender as a social construct than cis people, who (especially before trans people had our current visibility and voice) never thought of gender in that way. And it’s the same thing with aromantics: because we have to question ourselves on our feelings of love, we develop an understanding of love as a construct. But because we have such a nonexistent voice in the wider community & world, people don’t really… take that into account? Amatonormativity isn’t a “real problem”, so our opinions on love are just online discourse nonsense, and not people criticizing a social construct based on the real life harm it’s done them and others.
Just like how many cis people get defensive and feel attacked when trans people question the construct of gender, many alloromantic people get defensive and feel attacked when aromantic people question the construct of love.

I’ve talked before about the strangeness of the ICZN’s official recommendations for assigning a latin grammatical gender to non-latin genus-group names but I’m legitimately considering writing a formal request to have them either change or clarify those rules. like why on earth does it say “a noun having a gender in a modern European language (without having to be transliterated from a non-Latin alphabet into the Latin alphabet)”. that is so needlessly specific
the genus name of an animal is treated like a latin noun, and species names are given suffixes like they’re latin adjectives so in order to know what suffixes a species name can use you have to know what gender the genus name is.
you can sometimes just use the gender from the source language, but the ICZN explicitly defines several cases where you don’t do that, which include:
if the person with naming dibs explicitly stated what gender the name they came up with is supposed to have (fair)
if the name was modified from its original form to end with a latin noun suffix (in which case the gender is determined by that suffix. fair)
if the source language doesn’t have grammatical gender (fair, but the ICZN doesn’t explicitly specify what to do for genders that are incompatible with latin’s three-gender system)
if the source language is “non-modern”, unless it’s specifically latin or greek (why?)
if the source language doesn’t use the latin alphabet, unless it’s specifically ancient greek (why?)
if the source language isn’t “european” (what?)
if an eastern european zoologist gives a genus a name borrowed from some grammatically feminine serbo-croatian noun, explicitly stating that it’s meant to be serbo-croatian but not saying what gender the name is supposed to have (thus letting the default rules apply), the rules outlined by the ICZN imply that future species discovered in this genus have to have names that are feminine if and only if serbo-croatian counts as a modern european language that natively uses the latin alphabet, but otherwise it would default to masculine.
I cannot imagine the organization that thinks banning people from naming a beetle after hitler would be too political would have a sensible resolution to this naming conflict if it ever happens.
