trans women will be like “ah yeah I have some weird feelings about how my ex treated me” and then describe the most batshit insane acts of emotional cruelty I’ve ever heard in my life

You deserve?? To be treated?? Normally??

Your partner should not Insult you. Your partner should not make you feel bad about your appearance. Your partner should not ever physically hurt you (outside of sex, and only when discussed beforehand!). Your partner should not pressure you to engage in kinks or sex acts you’re uncomfortable with. Your partner should not control who you hang out with. Your partner should not cheat on you.

You deserve to be treated with respect and dignity! Jesus Christ!

For context from someone with chronic migraines: short reply in large font means I dont have to look at the screen longer than a second to see what the professor said.

Extremely considerate and I assume the professor probably has migraines sometimes too or someone close to them does.

So we’ve been having a bit of a debate in the office because we wanted to do the headline “Local man gives up sugar for 12 minutes” but then overdoing the “local man” trope is a bit male-centric, so we considered “Local woman” but then that sounds like we’re typecasting women so that wasn’t great either, but I think we’ve finally found a worthy compromise:

here’s the story. i know expressvpn has been recommended in some 🏴‍☠️ how-to posts but it is not trustworthy. the parent company, kape technologies, not only used to distribute malate but has ties to multiple state surveillance agencies. and be careful where you look for info about good vpns, because kape technologies owns a bunch of “vpn review” sites too

In case anyone can’t read the article for whatever reasons, the VPNs acquired are:

ExpressVPN

Private Internet Access

Zenmate

CyberGhost

And the VPN review sites they purchased are:

vpnMentor

Wizcase

So if you use any of those, time to look for other options.

A screenshot of Dollmare, showing a safety sign with a "no" symbol over a Multiocular O symbolALT

(INCORRECT) MULTIOCULAR O SPOTTED IN DOLLMARE!

SHOUT OUT TO THE OBSCURE UNICODE FANDOM!

So the Cyrillic letter O is sometimes written with a dot inside (Ꙩ) in 14-15th century texts, primarily in the word “eye”. There’s also a double-dotted version (Ꙫ) and double eyed- version (Ꙭ) .

And single manuscript in Old Church Slavonic from the 15th century uses a multi-ocular O.

Handwritten cyrillic text featuring a 10-eyed OALT

in the sentence “many-eyed seraphim”.

So in 2007 this symbol was proposed for inclusion in unicode, then added the next year, but it was done incorrectly. We got the 7-eyed version!

A seven-eyed multiocular-OALT

in 2020, there was a twitter thread talking about this symbol, and a linguist notices that the symbol didn’t match the one in the manuscript, and it was fixed in Unicode 15, released in 2020. Finally, the 10-eyed seraphim!

A ten-eyed Multiocular O ALT

But it takes time for fonts to be updated. Yours probably still draws it as 7-eyed. Here it is:

like, okay, consent does literally just mean agree. which is what enables this little rhetorical trick. because there’s all this cultural emphasis on sexual consent, which is just expressed as consent, a lot of phrases whose intended meanings are “rape is bad” can be taken literally to mean “i should get to agree to everything that happens in my vicinity.”

for an example, “i didn’t agree to seeing you wear that shirt” is straightforwardly a fucking insane thing for someone to say, but people regularly make use of this trick to make the (functionally identical) statement “i didn’t consent to seeing that”

Strongly recommend that people familiarize themselves with the white supremacist concept of “right to comfort” because of how scarily that concept aligns with this behavior

THIS is where the logic comes from that drives misogynistic control of what women wear, how fat people exist in public, how disabled people exist in public, miscontrues kink-related fashion as the same as sex itself, and prevents people breastfeeding their children in clean environments.

Its interesting what demographics are effected most negatively by this huh

idk who needs to hear this rn but suffering is not noble. take the tylenol

One time when I was younger I was refusing to take headache medicine and my mom said “the person who invented that medicine is probably so sad you won’t let them help you” and now every time I find myself denying medicine I just imagine the saddest scientist making those big wet eyes like “why won’t you let me help” and whoop then I take the medicine

scientist when you don’t take the medicine they developed to help your pain

As long as you are taking a SAFE dose of it, then it’s *good* for you. Pain is bad for the body. The inflammation from prolonged pain can worsen chronic issues and make it harder to heal.

Ibuprofen is best for pain that has inflammation, while acetaminophen doesn’t help with inflammation but is more broadly effective on other types of pain. As long as you are taking the recommended dose, you can even take them TOGETHER, since they have different mechanisms of action.

You do need to be aware of how much and how often you are taking any pain medication. Overdoses can be very painful (even lethal.) And if you are in chronic pain often enough that you need more than the safe dose, then you need to look into other medications to manage that pain.

(Also, if you are specifically taking Acetaminophen/Tylenol for your go-to pain management, getting some NAC and taking that with it reduces the risk of overdose AND may strengthen the effect.)

One other thing: NSAIDS (ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen being the three big ones) can cause digestive issues with chronic use, including stomach ulcers. That doesn’t mean “don’t take them,” it means “if you’re at the point where you’re on them all the time, every day, constantly, you should talk to a doctor about either reducing that risk or switching to another medication that doesn’t have those side effects.”

I don’t have the source for this table anymore but I felt it should be added to this post.

Also please please please consult your doctor if you are on any other type of medication that put large strains on your liver or kidneys before taking any kind of NSAIDs as they can recommend alternatives.

Yes Chronic Kidney Disease and liver disease prevent the use of NSAIDS entirely. Please remember this. Tylenol is the least harmful to these organs. If migraines are your problem, ask neurologist about the triptan drug family. Downside with these is nausea.

I feel that it is worth bringing up again:

As a scientist, this is the way I feel when people in pain don’t take the medication that was developed to help with pain:

Especially because as a scientist, I know that pain sensitization is a thing, and that experiencing pain for long periods of time can even train your whole nervous system to be even more reactive to potential pain. So if at all possible, I want my friends who are experiencing pain to try to control that pain as much as possible.

So if you are in pain, and you do not have any massive kidney and liver strain that prohibits you from taking a NSAID or paracetamol/Tylenol?

Please take the pain medicine. Please. Pleeeaaaaaase. I’m a scientist.

yeah i’m a scientist who specializes in designing new pain meds. suffering is not noble, this is exactly how i look when y'all don’t manage your pain:

take the meds! i became a scientist in this field explicitly to help people! i became a scientist because i too experience chronic pain and i failed out of literally all pain meds on the market. those of us in this field, we make these things to be used. be safe, follow doses, and if you have questions, ask your doc and pharmacist!

as someone who’s on a shitload of ibuprofen normally: Talk to your doctor about epramazole or similar. It will work wonders on the gastric front.

It reveals very deep flaws in your ideological framework if you consistently take the position that “Pedojacketing harassment campaigns against trans women are good if happen to be actual Pedos”, especially when your definition of “actual Pedo” is “watches the bad sort of Japanese Cartoons”. Like from a coherent materialist point of view, these sorts of campaigns aren’t bad because they happen to get wrongly weaponised against innocent transfems. They’re bad because this sort of interpersonal harassment is completely useless for both dismantling the systems that make child abuse possible and meaningfully rectifying specific cases of abuse on an individual scale, even in the relatively rare* cases where the target does legitimately support or even engage in this abuse.

This ineffectiveness is especially egregious when the criteria for involvement in abuse isn’t based off any actual social relations but merely public engagement with sufficiently reactionary media; determining threat through a usually tenuous and always idealist association. And it’s even more egregious when the media being cited isn’t “reactionary” by any standard beyond the ignorant homogenisation of an entire nation’s media supported by various incorrect assumptions about its general social and legal conditions. The fact that an ostensible “Marxist-Leninist” can hold a position even remotely favourable to these tactics simply demonstrates how detached knowledge of Dialectical Materialism does not automatically translate into an ability to apply it.

*by the nature of these campaigns being most common and effective against those who are least able to defend themselves i.e. those who are most structurally disadvantaged by the very systems that create this abuse in the first place. One a structural level these tactics are oriented towards hurting the vulnerable by rhetorically exploiting the spectre of abuse, not at protecting the vulnerable from actual abuse

Look y'all, this reveal means so much to me. So many times in movies these days there are big reveals for the audience’s benefit that mean absolutely nothing in the context of the story or to the characters in it. I’m talking the Thanos cameo in the Avengers’ stinger, I’m talking Benedict CumberKhan in Star Trek, I’m talking about every hackneyed “This character is actually this other character” when in universe nobody knows nor cares about their true identity.

But here? This reveal? This is a Big Reveal for us, Peter B Parker, and Miles, all on different levels. We and Peter both know Doc Ock is a portly dude, not a woman. We know the name Octavius… Otto Octavius. But when she says her name is Olivia Octavius we’re clued in to the fact that Doctor Octopus is a woman in this universe. And she has Peter captive.

Miles, if he was paying attention in science class earlier in the movie, would have known her name was Olivia Octavius, but that doesn’t mean anything to him, why would it? Liv has apparently been very good about keeping her supervillainy a secret. She’s in educational videos shown in high-schools. So to Miles, the reveal here is this scientist lady, who he knew enough about to know was the head scientist at Alchemax, is a supervillain. He gets the reveal a second or two after Peter.

And the movie? It was dropping hints the entire time, confident in our expectations blinding is to the truth. Olivia’s name was partially visible when Miles got to science class. Her glasses are octagonal. The lights in her lab are octagonal. We know she’s working with the Kingpin. Why wouldn’t she be a supervillain? Because she’s hot? Hell, Peter even says he needs to reexamine his internal biases. Maybe he was telling us that we should too.

It’s a reveal for us, and for our heroes. It means something, both in-universe and out. And that makes it infinitely better than other similar reveals.

Gustave Caillebotte, The Floor Planers, 1875

All hail Gustave Caillebotte, the only Impressionist who bothered to say “You know what this art movement doesn’t have enough of? Shirtless rough trade, that’s what!” And then he became the change he wanted to see in the world, and I think that’s beautiful.

i saw this in a museum once and i gotta go off on this for a second– not only is it a gorgeous display of technical mastery over light, darkness, composition, form. it’s also a slap in the face to artistic conventions at the time. at the time, you could have nudes but they had to be heroic. they had to be virtuous. 1875, paris– art was supposed to be elevating. it was for the wealthy, it was to be uplifting, it was so everyone who commissioned the pictures could flex their classics education. okay?

so here’s the floor planers. they’re workmen. they’re workmen. they’re not some rent boy you dolled up with a helmet to be achilles or adonis. artists have been hornily painting working-class models (and sex-worker boyfriends) into their portraits forever, but you’re supposed to frame your appreciation for the male form as an intellectually irreproachable appreciation for the heroic body from literature, or, conversely you could depict the humble beauty of peasants, if you must, but it had to be a sort of ode to nature and the simple life. peasants could be art, as long as they were… out there, you know. in a field. being a metaphor. so there’s your options for looking at a shirtless guy: he’s got to be mythic.

but no. look, here, at the workmen. the floor planers. the workmen’s bodies not dressed up in sandals and helmet, in flowers, on a pedestal. the workmen not employed as some distant paean to an arcadian countryside, not stacking sheaves or holding a lamb or elevating the beauty of nature. they’re here, they’re urban, they’re in a room just like you might have. the workers of your world, in your home, in this reality. the male body as a very real, very nonfigurative tool, humble and employed, but still gorgeous. the beauty of the men that the patrician class pays not to see. the men who come into your mansion through the back door and work unseen and leave unseen. those men. there, right there, this painting, glowing and beautiful.

not adonis. but beautiful.

anyway at the time everyone fucking hated this picture because it’s a direct slap across the classist chops. they were BIG MAD, this was filthy, it was an affront. they hated it. the paris salon rejected it. established intellectuals didn’t want anything to do with this kind of confrontation. it wasn’t art.

i just love that.

like, look at those hot guys go. look at the shine on the floor and the way their arms are. no virtuous framing, no classic allusions. just some regular guys making the floors nice for a rich fucker who never laid eyes on them at all. but here they are: look at them.

they’re still beautiful.

#if youd ever walked barefoot on a floor that isnt planed youd think this is heroic too
