Never forget that not only did she get banned because of staff’s transphobia, the CEO of this site followed her to Twitter and posted her account information publicly.

As much as we meme about the hammer car thing, this was a real instance of staff personally terrorizing a trans woman.

GO BABY GO

I love this. I *love* this.

Not only does the child have the rhythm and their part down precisely, but also, they are clearly doing the very-small-child thing of reserving exactly nothing.

Children have to learn not to use all of the force they’re capable of, adults mostly never use all of the force they are capable of, but here someone has given this child exactly the opportunity to use all of the force their body can produce, and do it musically.

The glee of that all-out effort in a context where clearly the people around them approve and appreciate their contribution? Amazing.

Took some searching, but I found him!

His name is Hinata and he’s a 5th generation Taiko drummer who was born in September (maybe October) 2020, so he’s about 3 ½ in this video.

THAT is hitting your feelings with sticks!!!!!

Lynn Conway, pioneer computer scientist and transgender activist, has passed away

Lynn Conway has passed away at the age of 86.

Born in 1938, Conway made significant contributions to the field of computer science. She was fired by IBM in 1968 after transitioning, but she went on to make major advances in her field, including revolutionizing the chip design process.

She was a trailblazer for transgender individuals in the tech industry and fought against discrimination and the pathologization of gender variance.

Trans activist Andrea James writes:

In keeping with her passion for innovation, Lynn was also a pioneer in online transgender resources. Among her most valuable early contributions were lists of successful trans people that inspired many in their own transitions.

Installing Linux (Mint) as a Non-Techy Person

I’ve wanted Linux for various reasons since college. I tried it once when I no longer had to worry about having specific programs for school, but it did not go well. It was a dedicated PC that was, I believe, poorly made. Anyway.

In the process of deGoogling and deWindows365'ing, I started to think about Linux again. Here is my experience.

Pre-Work: Take Stock

List out the programs you use regularly and those you need. Look up whether or not they work on Linux. For those that don’t, look up alternatives.

If the alternative works on Windows/Mac, try it out first.

Make sure you have your files backed up somewhere.

Also, pick up a 5GB minimum USB drive.

Oh and make a system restore point (look it up in your Start menu) and back-up your files.

Step One: Choose a Distro

Dear god do Linux people like to talk about distros. Basically, from what all I’ve read, if you don’t want to fuss a lot with your OS, you’ve got two options: Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Ubuntu is better known and run by a company called Canonical. Linux Mint is run by a small team and paid for via donations.

I chose Linux Mint. Some of the stuff I read about Ubuntu reminded me too much of my reasons for wanting to leave Windows, basically. Did I second-guess this a half-dozen times? Yes, yes I did.

The rest of this is true for Linux Mint Cinnamon only.

Step Two: Make your Flash Drive

Linux Mint has great instructions. For the most part they work.

Start here:

The trickiest part of creating the flash drive is verifying and authenticating it.

On the same page that you download the Linux .iso file there are two links. Right click+save as both of those files to your computer. I saved them and the .iso file all to my Downloads folder.

Then, once you get to the ‘Verify your ISO image’ page in their guide and you’re on Windows like me, skip down to this link about verifying on Windows.

Once it is verified, you can go back to the Linux Mint guide. They’ll direct you to download Etchr and use that to create your flash drive.

If this step is too tricky, then please reconsider Linux. Subsequent steps are both easier and trickier.

Step Three: Restart from your Flash Drive

This is the step where I nearly gave up. The guide is still great, except it doesn’t mention certain security features that make installing Linux Mint impossible without extra steps.

(1) Look up your Bitlocker recovery key and have it handy.

I don’t know if you’ll need it like I did (I did not turn off Bitlocker at first), but better to be safe.

(2) Turn off Bitlocker.

(3) Restart. When on the title screen, press your Bios key. There might be more than one. On a Lenovo, pressing F1 several times gets you to the relevant menu. This is not the menu you’ll need to install, though. Turn off “Secure Boot.”

(4) Restart. This time press F12 (on a Lenovo). The HDD option, iirc, is your USB. Look it up on your phone to be sure.

Now you can return to the Linux Mint instructions.

Figuring this out via trial-and-error was not fun.

Step Four: Install Mint

Just follow the prompts. I chose to do the dual boot.

You will have to click through some scary messages about irrevocable changes. This is your last chance to change your mind.

I chose the dual boot because I may not have anticipated everything I’ll need from Windows. My goal is to work primarily in Linux. Then, in a few months, if it is working, I’ll look up the steps for making my machine Linux only.

Some Notes on Linux Mint

Some of the minor things I looked up ahead of time and other miscellany:

(1) HP Printers supposedly play nice with Linux. I have not tested this yet.

(2) Linux Mint can easily access your Windows files. I’ve read that this does not go both ways. I’ve not tested it yet.

(3) You can move the taskbar (panel in LM) to the left side of your screen.

(4) You are going to have to download your key programs again.

(5) The LM software manager has most programs, but not all. Some you’ll have to download from websites. Follow instructions. If a file leads to a scary wall of strange text, close it and just do the Terminal instructions instead.

(6) The software manager also has fonts. I was able to get Fanwood (my favorite serif) and JetBrains (my favorite mono) easily.

In the end, be prepared for something to go wrong. Just trust that you are not the first person to ever experience the issue and look it up. If that doesn’t help, you can always ask. The forums and reddit community both look active.

👀

Can confirm that HP plays nice with Linux. I’m able to both print and scan wirelessly with ease and relatively little hassle to set up.

Little tip for the scanning: if your scanner has airscan then you can use that with a special sane plugin. I highly recommend

Save Dr. Farhat’s family from genocide in Gaza

👇 “Unveil the truth – Dive into the full story.”

In the heart of war-torn Gaza, where destruction and loss are a daily reality, lies the deeply moving tale of Dr. Husam Farhat and his family. Amidst the relentless bombardment, Dr. Farhat faced an unthinkable tragedy: the martyrdom of his beloved sisters, Inas and Amal, along with their husbands and children, and his brother Mustafa. This devastating loss shattered not only their dreams but also their hopes for a peaceful future.

Life Before the War: Memories of a Beautiful Home

Before the war, my life revolved around a beautiful home where I lived with my wife, our daughter Sham, and our sons Muhannad and Muhammad. This home was more than just a place to live; it was a sanctuary filled with love, warmth, and the joy of watching my children grow. Every corner of our home echoed with their laughter, turning it into a place where dreams for the future felt not only possible but inevitable, but then the war came, and in an instant, everything changed. The place where we once felt safe and secure was reduced to rubble. The life we had carefully built, the dreams we had nurtured, and the bright future we had planned were all torn apart. The war didn’t just destroy our home; it uprooted our entire existence, leaving us with nothing but the painful memories of what once was, Now, standing in the ruins of our former life, I’m left with fragments of a distant dream. The joy and security we once knew have been replaced by loss and uncertainty as we face a future overshadowed by harsh realities.

The Loss of My Professional Dream and Life After the War

And it wasn’t just my home that was destroyed. My accounting office, one of the most renowned in Palestine, was also reduced to rubble. I had worked tirelessly to build this office, which wasn’t just a place of business but a reflection of my passion and dedication to the field of accounting. It was our primary source of income, providing financial stability and security for my family, My office was well-known for its exceptional services and strong reputation among clients. Over the years, it had become a symbol of success and hard work in the accounting world. But the war took it all away in an instant. Everything I had worked so hard to achieve was destroyed, and years of effort and dedication were wiped out in moments, Now, I stand on the ruins of my office, just as I stand on the ruins of my life, trying to piece together the remnants of my dreams and memories. This office was a source of pride for me and my family, but the war has left us with nothing, facing an uncertain and difficult future.

War’s Toll on My Dreams and Future

The war didn’t just destroy my home and office; it shattered my dreams and future. As a PhD candidate in Accounting Information Systems at Universiti Utara Malaysia, I was in my final year, pursuing research that is a significant contribution to my field and valuable to entrepreneurs. With a master’s degree with distinction and a bachelor’s degree, I also taught at several universities, sharing my knowledge and passion, But the war disrupted everything. Years of hard work, academic progress, and my contributions to the field have been torn apart, leaving me with an uncertain future. Now, I am faced with the daunting task of not only rebuilding my life but also reviving the dreams and ambitions that once drove me. The journey ahead is filled with challenges, but my resolve to continue remains strong.

Displacement and Uncertainty After the War

Now, after all this devastation, my family and I are living as displaced people, homeless and jobless, with no clear future for ourselves or our children. Every day is a struggle to find food for my children, who have been robbed of every chance at a normal life by this war. Once, we lived in Shuja'iyya, in North Gaza, where we had a home, a life, and dreams. But now, after being displaced over nine times, we find ourselves in the refugee camps of Nuseirat, the war has stripped us of everything—our home, our security, and our future. Our daily life has become a constant search for basic necessities, a far cry from the life we once knew. The dreams I had for my children and myself now feel like distant memories, overshadowed by the relentless challenges of survival. Each day brings new uncertainties, as we navigate this harsh new reality, clinging to the hope that one day we might rebuild what was lost.

Rebuild Hope: A Call to Stand with Us

We urgently call on all those who stand in solidarity with us, and every supporter, to help save what remains of our lives. Your assistance, even in small ways, can make a significant difference in helping us rebuild and restore our shattered world, rebuilding feels like an insurmountable task, but with your help, we can begin to piece together what was lost. Your contributions, no matter how small, can provide the foundation we need to start anew, offering hope and a chance at a better future for our family. Your solidarity means the world to us as we navigate these challenging times.

A digital illustration features my family standing together, dressed in warm clothing, with backpacks and bags, suggesting they are traveling or displaced. The group consists of Dad, Mom, Ahmed, and Maryam in the middle with our beloved cat Tota, Me Darine, Nadine wearing hijabs, and at the end Judi with her backpack. The background has a soft pastel gradient, and the text "Ramadan Kareem!" is written at the top. The expressions on their faces are a mix of resilience and hope.

========≈===========≈=====

Ramadan Kareem is a common greeting used during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.

Meaning of Ramadan Kareem

"Ramadan" refers to the month itself, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.

"Kareem" means "generous" in Arabic.

Together, "Ramadan Kareem" can be interpreted as "Generous Ramadan" expressing wishes for a blessed and spiritually fulfilling month.ALT

A stunning piece by the incredibly talented Notte @rhymeswithfart , inspired by our true story one that began on January 27, 2025, and continues to unfold.

A digital illustration depicts us standing on a hill, overlooking a massive crowd moving along a road. The text "The Return to Home" is written at the top. In the foreground, from R2L Judi Nadine Darine Maryam Ahmed and Mom snd Dad, stand together. Some are wearing headscarves, while others have backpacks. The sky is cloudy, and power lines stretch across the scene, adding to the atmosphere of the illustration. The image conveys a sense of movement, longing, and a journey back to a homeland.

ALT
This is a hand-drawn, colored comic-style illustration. It depicts a young man named Ahmed walking carefully with a backpack, as indicated by the caption: "Ahmed scouts ahead, careful with every step." He has curly hair and wears a dark sweater and brown pants.

In the background, a man with a beard and a white shirt is carrying a box in front of a fruit stand filled with crates of oranges, apples, and other fruits. The setting appears to be an outdoor or semi-outdoor market area with visible damage to buildings and rubble on the ground.

In the foreground, two children are crouched on the ground, building a kite. One child wears a blue sweater, while the other wears a red hoodie and has curly hair. They are smiling and focused on their task.

The scene portrays a mix of caution, resilience, and normalcy in a challenging environment. Let me know if you need a more detailed description!

ALT
A two-panel comic features my mom and Judi, both dressed in warm clothing. Mom wears a headscarf and carries a bag.

In the first panel, they stand on a barren landscape with a cloudy sky. Judi, looking sad, asks, "Do you think our house is still there?" Mom looks ahead with a solemn expression.

In the second panel, the background is blue and glowing. Mom, now smiling gently, places a comforting hand on Judi’s shoulder and says, "No matter what, we'll rebuild." Judi looks up at her with a mix of sadness and hope.ALT

A two-panel comic illustration. The top panel shows my family, my father, my brother, and me and youngersiblings, standing close together. They appear worried, solemn, and anxious. The background behind us is a gradient of warm colors, possibly representing sunset or an emotional atmosphere.

The bottom panel reveals what we are looking at a devastated landscape filled with rubble and collapsed buildings. We are seen from behind, huddled together as we face the destruction. A speech bubble from one of us reads, 'We're home.' The color palette in this panel is muted, with grays and blues emphasizing the bleakness of the scene.
ALT
Maryam with her curly hair, wearing a white cap and dark clothing, stands in front of a pile of rubble. Her expression shows surprise and sadness as she notice a framed family photo resting among the debris. The sky is a muted pink, giving a somber tone to the scene.
ALT
Maryam now holding the framed family photo close to her, looking at it with teary but hopeful eyes. They are smiling gently and saying, "We still have us." The background is a soft pink, creating a warm and emotional contrast to the previous scene.ALT
An illustration depicts us as a family, including Dad, mom, and me Darine and my brother Ahmed and my younger siblings, working together to rebuild in a post-disaster or war-torn setting. The background shows destroyed buildings, rubble, and debris. WE are engaged in different activities: one sweeps the ground, two carry a large metal sheet, Maryam and Judi stack bricks, and Dad helps mom climb over the rubble. Facial expressions convey determination and cooperation. The sky is a mix of soft pink and blue hues, contrasting with the destruction. In the bottom right corner, a text box reads, "To be continued..."

Please, do not become accustomed to the scene. The war is not completely over yet, and we must not forget the harsh days we have endured.

We need every helping hand, every heart in solidarity, and every voice to amplify our cause. Reviving life here is not a choice it is an obligation we all share. Let us come together on this journey of healing and restoring hope.

amina @freepalestine96 is still fundraising for her family. with aid being cut off from the strip once more i can only imagine the horror and fatigue she must be feeling having to take care of her three small children, nasser, baraa, and adam. they’ve already faced so much tragedy in this genocide, losing family members, facing malnutrition, and being internally displaced.

her gfm is currently super low on funds with only 10% raised and the last donation was a week ago!!!

🆘🆘SToP Don’t Skip

A small donation can make a big difference 🙏🍉🇵🇸

Dear beloved friends, My name is Mahmoud Alkhaldi. I am a Palestinian refugee living with my fiancée and family in a catastrophic situation-in tents- in Rafah. However, for 116+ days, me and my family have been under intense bombing and warplanes rockets in the Gaza strip. I’m asking funds to evacuate (5) members of my family from Gaza to a safe place in Egypt, including my younger brother (Mohammed, his wife, and his 1 and half year son Yasser), and me and my fiancée Sujood). It could be very expensive and costly to evacuate a war zone at a miserable time like this. We will need approximately $50000 and a lot of prayers

My home was cozy, beautiful, and warm before the war. Here is some pictures for our house before the war

Our home was targeted in a tank bombing on the 25th of November 2023 that left it unlivable, along with the entire neighborhood of Al-Burij refugee camp, in Gaza City.

When we returned back to our home to get some needed itemsand clothes, we found that Israeli soldiers also steal our belongings. Since that day, my family has been sleeping in a miserable tent in Rafah, in the south of Gaza, which has become a home for all people from the Gaza strip, whose homes were also destroyed by airstrikes, but they have survived thus far.

I can’t express how useless and depressed we felt after finding out what they’d been through and are currently going through. Each moment, we worry about losing them. Without connection settings, we cannot constantly contact them. During the moment of typing, over 25,0000 individuals have been killed in Gaza. They are without electrical power or heating for a period of three months, food is limited, and their drinking water is unsafe for human consumption. My family’s only hope is to evacuate to to a safer place out of Gaza. My family went through the loss of several friends, and many of them have lost their spouses and children. I am afraid of losing my family. They are the light that leads me through my life. I cannot live or survive without them.

The expenses of travel for 5 people are as follows:

• $50000 for the boarding pass (Egyptian coordination) to pass Rafah border, 10000$ for each person.

We are need your help and support in raising $50000 to transport them from Gaza to Egypt. Once the cash are put in the US bank account, they will be deposited to my family’s bank account. He intended to utilize the funds to cover the costs of going to Egypt as soon as feasibl

watching a video about this cargo ship that blew up in texas in the 40’s and it’s like . i know that with a lot of incidents especially older ones like this the reason that the safety standards were so shitty was because they literally did not know that these kinds of disasters COULD happen (and in many cases these disasters are what MADE the safety standards better) but sometimes you just learn about this shit and you think. how could all these people be so stupid

- cargo of the ship consisted of twine (flammable) peanuts (flammable, oily) and cotton (FLAMMABLE) from houston and POST WAR AMMUNITION (OH MY GOD) FROM CUBA

- additional cargo they were picking up in texas city was LOOSE BAGS OF AMMONIUM NITRATE that the dock workers described as being ANOMALOUSLY WARM UPON BEING LOADED INTO THE SHIP ??????

- small fire breaks out in cargo hold, instead of putting it out with water that could damage the cargo the captain decides to close all the hatches to try to make the cargo hold airtight and smother the fire (stupid but you can kind of understand how they got there)

- the heat of the trapped smoke in the cargo hold instead causes the aforementioned LOOSE BAGS OF AMMONIUM NITRATE to undergo a chemical reaction and turn into nitrous oxide, massively increasing the pressure inside of the airtight hold

- one of the hatch covers fails

- mfw all the pressure in the cargo hold is released at once causing an explosion that fucking levels everything in the port within 2000 feet

- mfw the shockwave shatters windows up to a hundred miles away

- mfw on-fire twine and peanuts and fucking grenades are raining down over texas city

- mfw some of the pieces of the ship got launched into the sky faster than the speed of sound

- mfw they found the ship’s anchor inside of a ten foot wide crater over a mile and a half away

- mfw this was one of the largest and most devastating non-nuclear explosions in world history

- mfw this could have been avoided if they’d just taken the L and put the fire out with water

also worth a mention: the SECOND boat that exploded in a very similar manner the next day which was an even more violent explosion, but less devastating because most of the port was. you know. already leveled and evacuated

someone running rescue and recovery after the FIRST boat exploded noticed that the second boat’s cargo was on fire and reported it….and this just went. ignored. for several hours. until someone was like “oh shit better get this under control” and tried to move the boat to no avail and they just gave up and evacuated

next day it started raining glowing-hot metal boat chunks all over the city. AGAIN.

Today’s problematic ships are the Grandcamp (first explosion) and High Flyer (second explosion).
