i think what bothers me about a lot of “girl power” narratives is that they function on the implicit idea on the idea that women can become worthy of respect. and i happen to think that really caring about women means believing they already are worthy of respect. that historical seamstresses and soccer moms and forgotten sisters and sweet polite little girls and someone’s weird grandma matter just as much as the warriors and politicians, even if they, personally, never accomplish anything “cool.”
INSPIRING: This woman pioneered the concept of the computer program, making her nearly as noteworthy as a random upper-class man whose only accomplishment was his inheritance!
My DM for our weekly DnD game recently moved to California. It’s been sad and we miss him. He DMs now via Zoom and we’ve got a really nice set up so he feels very present. Today while DMing he had us rolling investigation in a library. He said the books title was Is Sex Necessary? When we all seemed puzzled he prompted, “You two should know… Is Sex Necessary?”
My girlfriend and I were stumped. “We should know or our characters should know?” I asked.
“You!” He insisted.
We looked at each other in bafflement repeating “Is Sex Necessary!?” “Is Sex Necessary…?”
“It’s on your bookshelf!” He exclaimed. So we went over to investigate and sure enough, a slim volume stood on the shelf titled Is Sex Necessary? The whole group, all four of us, clustered around to inspect the book.
It honestly didn’t occur to me to investigate the book for clues, I opened the cover hoping to see a hint as to its origins, and inside found a paper note with my DMs distinct handwriting that proclaimed, “Secret! Do not open!”
It turns out he planted notes in several books over two months ago specifically for this eventuality. Each note had a hint for defeating beholders (which he knew we were gunning to fight after being extorted by one) and were sprinkled through many books. He’d say, “An earth genasi explorer wrote this account called Feet of Clay,” and I’d go pull down my Terry Pratchett book of the same title. Or “A sea faring elf wrote about their study of leviathans in Ship of Magic,” and I’d grab my tattered Robin Hobb to find another note.
It was really cute and immersive and it made him feel a lot closer finding all the little notes he left in our home.
I still can’t get over what brits call musical notes like bro please I’m trying so hard to take this country seriously
I hate to be defending brits but as a musician the simplistic american terms sound so sterile and lifeless to me.
If yanks can have their whole “but inches sound so much more poetic than centimeters and millimeters” stupid bullshit I think we can have this stupid bullshit too.
the lack of ability to comprehend literally anything on this site is genuinely impressive
Absolutely agree we should be allowed to take a break from the fall of western society to just enjoy things and there’s nothing wrong with not dedicating 100% of your time to activism (in fact if you do dedicate 100% of your time to activism, you will probably destroy yourself), but the game and the halftime show were also inherently political events.
Trump was there and people were booing him through the game. The chiefs, who have won 3 of the previous 5 games and made it to 1 more, were the obvious choice to win, and were the team Trump wanted to win, lost. Massively. Even though it was not a political statement, it was a political outcome. Anything involving Trump is inherently political because that is what he does.
Meanwhile Kendrick Lamar’s show started out with “Uncle Sam,” who in the context of the show and with everything he said was also a reference to Uncle Tom. If that statement doesn’t make sense in and of itself, please look up Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Sparknotes works, but reading the actual book is better; it’s public domain.
Then there’s Kendrick saying “the revolution boutta be televised, you picked the right time but the wrong guy.” That was clearly about the election. The prison yard, the goose stepping, 40 acres and a mule, it was all political. It was all a protest.
I would even argue that the inclusion of his beef with Drake was inherently political cause the primary focus of it within the halftime show was about his abuse of women and children.
I can’t decide which implication from the screenshot is worse: that we shouldn’t allow ourselves rest and fun, or that the superbowl and “celebrity stuff” aren’t (currently) extremely political.

If I was a game dev on a popular franchise I’d be slipping in fake “unused assets” to fuck with data miners more or less constantly. There’s a random asset folder which includes two “unused” versions of the player character with their dick out, except on one of them the dick is really big and on the other the dick is really small – see if we can get folks arguing about which version is canon.
Six months later there’s a patch whose notes say “cleaned up unused assets”, but all it does is swap the dick sizes.
hey man. i didn’t see you at the ambient red lighting and horse store. you ok man?
This is the kind of post that is baffling until you see the next post and it’s a store with a horse in it but everything’s red. except. there is no second post
As far as Pokemon trainers go I’m basically a huge badass. Any kid who enters my line of sight is going to get destroyed by my Pidgey. And if that doesn’t work? I have a second Pidgey with the exact same move set.
when i was a kid i lost my retainer while swimming in the ocean because i saw a stingray and screamed too hard and it popped right out my mouth and i used to go to sleep at night imagining that it had landed in the mouth of a dolphin who now had beautiful straight human teeth
schizorella: “You might already know, but this is a midi file found in Windows operating systems in the C:\Windows\Media folder. People say it was used as a test file but I don’t think anyone really knows why it’s there. Nevertheless, it’s awesome!!!”
You don’t have to like weed but I find people who are vehemently anti-weed but claim to be left leaning infuriating. If you go into a rage because you smelled someone smoking pot, how the fuck do you expect to form community with people addicted to meth? It’s easier to say you hate smokers than to say you hate all drug users in leftist spaces because one makes you sound a bit like a square while the other is the writing on the wall. You aren’t anti-weed, you’re anti-drug user and anyone who uses substances is not safe around you.

I know dozens of people who use meth, coke, and fentanyl. While heroin is harder to get I do know some folks who use it when they can. Some of these drug users are my neighbors, some are my clients, and some are my friends & family. One does not cease to be human just because they use a substance you find scary.
Community doesn’t mean you need to invite them to your home and look away if they smoke there. It means you don’t call your property manager because you suspect your neighbor uses. It means you don’t require drug tests for homeless shelters and housing services. It means the very idea of someone who smokes meth in your community doesn’t make you go, “what the hell.”
Genuinely kind of a wild thing to see in the replies as someone who has been professionally practicing harm reduction for years.
Considering recent events over here in the States, this seemed like a good time to bring this back. Over the next four years, expect an increase in discourse around “undesirables.” This will include but not be limited to drug addicts.
