i feel like a lot of the time fatphobia tends to manifest as a similar phenomenon to the “temporarily embarrassed millionaire” thing especially among older people. sooo many people who have gained weight with age see themselves as temporarily embarrassed thin people. like 60+ y/o people who have not been thin since their 30s but they still keep going on diets. it sucks to see cause it reads like such a clear expression of self-hatred to me, like they’re punishing themselves for their bodies developing in ways that they probably in reality had very little control over. fatphobia is such brain poison dude

Red marker handwriting on a bathroom wall. Text reads:

“Boss made a dollar
Granddad made a dime
But that was a poem
From a simpler time.

Boss made a thousand
Gave pa a cent
But that penny paid the mortgage
Or at least it paid the rent

Now Boss makes a million
And gives us jack
Smugly blames the workers
For the labor that he lacks.”

And the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls.

Help UK Trans Girl Relocate! (URGENT)

My fiancée, @plaidos , is currently looking to relocate with me outside of the UK, where things are becoming increasingly dangerous for trans people every day. Whether it be legislation or day-to-day living, this rampant transphobia has informed our decision to move her out of the country.

We have already taken steps to do this as soon as possible; I have increased my hours at work, am currently in line for a promotion, and we have recently been able to acquire resources which would allow her to work more often. Even then, the expenses for things such as Visa Fees, travel, housing, and other cost of living expenses are still quite high. This fund would serve as a financial safety net for us, and would help this process go much smoother for us in the long run.

We could really use any assistance you can offer, and we thank you for sharing & donating!

My own housing/home situation has become more dangerous and volatile very fast, and I need to seek shelter elsewhere, soon, for my safety and well-being.

I’ve been eyeing up a few apartments in the area in my current price range and I’m 🤏 this close to getting promoted, which will help me support myself in the long run. Anything donated will be going towards that apartment and immigration paperwork.

Any little bit helps– and if GFM doesn’t work well for you, my paypal is here.

also we fucked up as a society the moment we started telling teens and aspiring artists to conflate being an artist with building a brand as if the two things are inextricable. the name of the game if you want to share your art is to work a job and sell yourself as aesthetizied content. back in my day we could just POST SHIT. to deviantart! what the fuck!

pro-tip if ur a teen or aspiring artist: stay the fuck away from tiktok. tiktok is not the place for your art. your art is not content to be sold. don’t listen to art youtubers advice if they dilute being an artist to stats and algorithms. trying to make a business or career out of art is actually something that takes a lot of experience and consideration to go into it is Not an inherent facet to getting started/expressing yourself as an artist. conflating art = selling something/working a job is the fastest fucking way to ruin it for yourself i am so serious. find communities that share your artistic interests make friends and share your art there. be indulgent and creative and experimental. you deserve a period in your artistic journey that is purely selfish and fostering of your growth. don’t let capitalism take that from you yet

GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE!

Tumblr’s added some ruidimentary search operators, one of which lets you search by blog, and it actually turns up posts, unlike the search bar on a blog itself. It recognises quotation marks now, too.

You just have to make sure you’re searching on the actual “search” page, it still tries to take me to the “tagged” page and I have to manually change the URL.

BUT, you can actually find a post on someone’s blog now. Just don’t start from the blog you want to search

LOL.

Also works on the search page on the mobile app!!

How many beautiful emo men would we have if not for the tyranny of the 9-5. How many strange goth women are trapped inside the performance of a clean girl aesthetic because she needs to be able to eat. How many people are wage slaves when they should be punks?

Also I’m smarter than all of you guys who were forced out of your emo phases because I went to 7 mile and bought a wig for normie cosplay and no one has clocked me at any of the job interviews I’ve been to. I go to the interview in long sleeves and I wear a brace on my wrist to cover my hand tattoo and pretend to have sprained it until they give me the job. life hacks.

Oh also this is why a lot of people dressed alt on social media during the pandemic and then stopped. They’ll say it’s because they were bored and they think it’s cringe now. They’re liars it’s actually because they had to go back to work and were made to feel cringe by the lame ass office culture

Following the author of The Last Unicorn on Facebook is the only thing that makes being on that site worthwhile.

(source)

#all i know about the last unicorn is that alex hirsch hates this film#because the unicorn is a spoiled little bitch that never thanks the wizard for doing anything to help her

????????????????????????
is this true? because….she very much does thank him at the end of the movie

it’s in the gravity falls directors commentaries, and I trust his take

thank him while he’s busting his ass for you and you sit there complaining goddamnit

You should see it. It isn’t worth the risk of not seeing it if it’s something that you might even remotely enjoy. Especially based on what one person says, no matter how much you admire or trust them.

He can dislike it, but if the unicorn had been buddy-movie grateful, disney-movie emotional, it would have been a very different, very shallow, MUCH worse movie. Like just, really really bad.

She’s not bitchy or catty or cruel, she literally does not understand humans or their drive or their big emotions. She doesn’t feel love, she doesn’t feel regret. She doesn’t have ambition, she doesn’t desire or benefit from change. She barely wants anything. She’s complete by herself. She is content.

She can’t be ungrateful unless you expect what is essentially a…a kind of immortal spirit, a place, a forest in the shape of a creature, to be in any way at all human. She can’t be a deity, that’s an extremely human concept, but she is not a normal living thing in any regard whatsoever.

The entire point of the movie is change, and truth. Front to back, it is change and truth, and the destruction of illusions, and surviving it, and the toll that takes, and the gifts it can bring. It’s full of tremendous and intense, unthinkable, incomprehensible, destructive, renewing, life-altering change. And also truth, and the unraveling of illusions, which are everywhere in the narrative, and are almost always dangerous, or hiding something that is.

The unicorn unravels everything around her by being the catalyst for change, and it is incredibly destructive. Things come apart around her. It leads to good things, usually, but it breaks everything first.

She changes on the road, she learns to care about humans enough to help them, to save their lives, and that is very much an expression of gratitude.

She just doesn’t care about the wizard questing for greatness. It is irrelevant. Glory is useless. And she’s right.

She doesn’t experience a fundamental alteration of her nature until she is forcibly changed against her will to survive, and it is not a positive change. It ruins her. It is a tremendous trauma that leaves her empty and broken, and eventually, partly and unnaturally human. She keeps losing what she was, and it is tragic and painful to watch. Why would she be grateful for that? She wishes she had died.

She finally develops something like love, but only after she has forgotten much of what she was. Then she desperately grasps onto it as something to replace what she lost.

Her encroaching humanity is killing what she was (her first response to being human was absolute visceral terror at having a mortal, and thus actively dying, body) a trauma response that allows her to survive, to hide. An illusion.

Love is an attempt to make peace with it all, and it is beautiful enough, but also empty. You are never meant to cheer for it. Only feel for them both. It’s a sticking point for some people that the romance isn’t done well. It isn’t meant to feel right. They leaned on it a little hard in the movie, the book does it better, but it was a “kids’ movie” (it isn’t) so that was a little inevitable.

Change destroys everything, and it breaks everything.

At the end, when she changes back, who is it she appears to, to acknowledge what happened? And who is it she visits and touches and loves and says goodbye to? She is grateful.

The movie/book does exactly what it set out to do, and I have to say that I don’t necessarily trust the judgment of people who dismiss it out of hand.

Yes, I saw it young, in the theater, so I imprinted, but it has been a radically different movie at different parts of my life. I’ve identified with every character in different phases of my life, so it has had the depth to stand up to easily over a hundred viewings by a half dozen versions of myself. I know people have their issues with the style of animation which, whatever, I think it’s gorgeous and I also don’t consider that a reason to dismiss an otherwise good movie or show (I really dislike the animation style of Gravity Falls, actually, it bores the crap out of me, but that isn’t the point). But the story itself is not like anything else I’ve ever seen.

If you get it, you get it. If you don’t, you don’t. But wanting her to be grateful and kind is…really super duper extremely not the point, and would actually be antithetical to it and ruin the story as it is. And it’s missing the ways she expresses those things. If that’s what you take away, that she is somehow morally deficient, you literally did not understand it, or you haven’t seen it, or you have a take so radically divergent from mine I am probably incapable of understanding it.

It is so, so good.

It’s currently a ‘free with ads’ watch on YouTube*, too!

(in the US, at least, idk if these are region locked)

Ooooo I will be watching it (again) then! Thank you for the heads up!

Hot take, but cis people have gender identities. They aren’t the gender they identify as because of their genitalia or what their birth certificate says. They’re only cis because they identify with a gender and it happens to match their government documentation. Cis men aren’t men because they’re “obviously” men for having a penis. They’re men because they identify as men. It’s the self-identification that dictates this, not any other factor, even for cis folks. And we should be framing it this way. A cis man identifies as a man and a cis woman identifies as a woman. There is no automatic or inherent gender.

You are not “born a boy/girl.” Infants don’t have a gender. You acquire gender when you identify as it. No such thing as “biologically a man/woman.”

“I don’t identify as anything, I’m a man.”

It sure sounds like you identify as a man, bud.

Giving a brownie to cis folks who rb this.

Gonna admit the “this isn’t a hot take it’s obvious” comments from a dozen or so people are grating on my nerves, so I’m gonna address that.

Just say you’ve never had an actual conversation with a cis person outside of a very leftist circle lol. Obvious to you. To you, fellow trans person. I wish I got paid every time I had to hear a cis person say they don’t have a gender identity or don’t “identify” as anything they just “are” a man or a woman.

Sometimes you have to stop and ask yourselves what group of people a post is mainly directed at.

I submit to you that the most iconic feature of any animal is either unlikely or impossible to fossilize.

If all we had of wolves were their bones we would never guess that they howl.

If all we had of elephants were fossils with no living related species, we might infer some kind of proboscis but we’d never come up with those ears.

If all we had of chickens were bones, we wouldn’t know about their combs and wattles, or that roosters crow.

We wouldn’t know that lions have manes, or that zebras have stripes, or that peacocks have trains, that howler monkeys yell, that cats purr, that deer shed the velvet from their antlers, that caterpillars become butterflies, that spiders make webs, that chickadees say their name, that Canada geese are assholes, that orangutans are ginger, that dolphins echolocate, or that squid even existed.

My point here is that we don’t know anything about dinosaurs. If we saw one we would not recognize it. As my evidence I submit the above, along with the fact that it took us two centuries to realize they’d been all around us the whole time.

XKCD

So that people don’t need to go through the notes:

- We have fossils of spider webs

- Paleontologists have reconstructed the larynx (voice box) of extinct animals and we have a pretty good idea what vocalizations they were capable of

- Fossilized pigments have been found in a variety of taxa

- Soft tissues fossilize more often than you think; we have skin impressions for like 90% of Tyrannosaurus rex’s full body (shoulder blades and neck are the only bits missing)

If pop culture is your only window into extinct animals, then you do not remotely understand how much we know.

We know the entire lifecycle of a tyrannosaurus. We know from the sheer amount of remains we have, from every stange.

  • We know roughly how they sounded (as the person above me said).
  • We know they had remarkable vision.
  • We know they had the second. strongest sense of smell in history.
  • We know from their bones that they grew to a certain size and stayed there until about 14 or so, then absolutely ballooned up to their adult size in about three or four years.
  • We know they likely lived in family groups, because we have bones with certainly fatal injuries for a solitary animal (broken legs and such) that are completely healed.

We know exactly how other dinosaurs look, down to colors and patterns, because bones are not the only information that is preserved.

The Sinosauropteryx is one such dinosaur. Because pigmentation molecules were preserved in the feather impressions, we know it’s colors, and it’s tail rings (which one would argue would be it’s “iconic feature.”

(Art credit Julio Lacerda)

Microraptor is another! We know from feather impressions that it had four wings. We know from pigmentation that it was an iredecent black, like a raven.

(Art credit Vitor Silva)

This is not limited to dinosaurs, or feathers. We’ve found pigmentation in scales and skin. We’ve completely reconstructed two extinct penguins, colors and all. We’ve figured out the colors of some non-avian and non-feathered dinosaurs. We can identify evidence of feathers existing on animals without feather impressions.

We have feathered dinosaurs preserved in amber.

We can defer likely behavioral patterns through adaptations we see in bones, and from the environments they were found in. We can see how certain movements evolved through musculature attachments (yes, how muscles attached is often preserved). We know avian flight likely evolved by “accident” by the way early raptorforms moved their arms to strike at their prey.

We also understand behavior in extant animals and can easily speculate likely behaviors in extinct animals. (A predator running for it’s life is not going to exhibit hunting behaviors)

We learn and understand way more from “rocks” than paleontologists are given credit for. And if you watch a movie like Jurassic World, which has no interest in portraying anything with any sort of accuracy, and your take away is “We can’t possibly know anything about these animals,” then you don’t understand science.

As for shrinkwrapped reconstructions, we understand how muscles attach, and how fat works. Artists who lean into shrinkwrapping are are not generally concerned with scientific accuracy, or biology. They’re only concerned with Awesombro.

If true paleoartists tried to reconstruct a hippo, while they naturally would not get every bit correct, it would certainly look like a real animal, and not that alien monster that tumblr is so fond of using as “proof” that paleontologists don’t know anything (an art piece that itself was extreme and satirical, and a condemnation of the particular subset of paleoartists I mentioned earlier)

Every time paleoblr tries to show you how extinct animals actually looked, all we get is a chorus of “thanks i hate it” and “stop ruining dinosaurs!”
