If you want your memory or executive function to improve, stare out a window at the skyline or sidewalk or trees or birds on the electrical wires for like 20+ minutes per day. (With no other stimulation like a podcast or TV if you can manage but hey baby steps innit). If you’re fortunate enough to have safe outside with any bits of nature, go stare closely at a 1 meter square of grass and trip out on the bugs and shapes of grasses and stuff.
Literally this will make you smarter. Our brains HAVE TO HAVE this zone out time to do important stuff behind the scenes. This does not happen during sleep, it’s something else.

alright, I’m annoyed with the class that I’m taking. it’s about writing novels, and I thought it would have cool stuff about balancing your narrative and developing themes etc, but instead she spent the first class talking about how every book fits into the Hero’s Journey (the monomyth template). and I was somewhat of a contrarian, and said “can you give us examples of books that don’t fit into this template?” and she said “no. because all books fit.”
but I dunno man, I just finished reading this Korean book where the plot is just the character having a string of hookups and reflecting on them without changing in any way. I don’t know if it’s possible to contort that into the Hero’s Journey.
Just started reading Sherlock Holmes and all the adaptations are wrong. This man is a delight. He gets excited about hemoglobin and is ecstatic at the thought of Watson as a roommate. He purposefully forgets how the solar system works so he has more room in his brain for crime. He shows Watson the dirt stains on his trousers and he can tell what part of London they come from based on color and consistency. (As far as i can tell Watson didn’t ask, Sherlock just gets back from walks and tells Watson about the stains unprompted.) The text specifically says “Holmes was certainly not a difficult man to live with.” Why does every adaptation make him unpleasant and rude, he’s literally just eccentric. He’s such a goober, I love him.

This is especially funny because early on, part of Netflix’s business model was to look at what series were being pirated and acquire them, and a lot of pirates would just use Netflix because it was easier and not too expensive.

afaik mostly comes from the history show 那年那兔那些事/Year Hare Affair where china is depicted as rabbits. as for why the show did it, there are a few different possibilities: the ballad of mulan’s ending lines; the fact rabbits are peaceful and populous; or ‘rabbit’ and 'comrade’ sounding alike in some topolects

Being 30 is fun. I was discussing anime with a teen at work and asked her how much of bnha she had watched. She had trouble answering and wasn’t sure how to approach it. I said “better question was who was your husbando” and she turned bright red before mumbling an answer. They never expect me to know how deep their love of anime boys runs….
One time she said she used to be into BL and another employee down the hall asked what BL was and I yelled back “ITS YAOI” which reduced the teen to yelling “ITS SOFTCORE! SOFT CORE!!” So I yelled back “ITS SOFTCORE YAOI” anyway I get why dads are like that now
The worst trick a childhood anxiety disorder pulls is, you spend your early years being applauded for being so much more mature than your peers, because you aren’t disruptive, you don’t want any kind of attention, you don’t express yourself, you keep yourself to yourself - this makes you a pleasure to have in class, etc etc - and you start to believe it’s virtue. But you’re actually way behind your peers in normal social development, and who knows if you can ever catch up.

i think the near-extinction of people making fun, deep and/or unique interactive text-based browser games, projects and stories is catastrophic to the internet. i’m talking pre-itch.io era, nothing against it.
there are a lot of fun ones listed here and here but for the most part, they were made years ago and are now a dying breed. i get why. there’s no money in it. factoring in the cost of web hosting and servers, it probably costs money. it’s just sad that it’s a dying art form.

a list of factors that CAN cause poor outcomes and fatalities in blood transfusions:

A list of factors that there have no substantial scientific proof of being linked with poor outcomes and fatalities in blood transfusion:
the sex of the donor
Currently, in the UK, there via a shortage of blood donors; in particular donors from Afro-Carribean backgrounds, whose blood is more likely to be a HLA match for transfusions for sickle cell anaemia and beta thalassaemia sufferers.
I guarantee you that if you’ve gone into haemorrhagic shock, or are at risk of sickle cell crisis, the absolute last thing you’re going to be thinking about is the sex of your donor, because without blood — no matter who donated it — you’re going to die.
Blood transfusions save lives — no matter the donor’s sex — to say that donor sex is related to adverse outcomes is at best, blatant misinformation with limited if any scientific backing, and at worst, modern day phrenology that’s playing dice with people’s lives.
(The data Rowling uses comes from 3 trials, all of which agree that a. further studies with wider sample sizes are needed, and b. the cause is likely due to an immunological factor rather than anything to do with endocrinology. Also, bias of interpretation is A Thing, folks.)
I was actually just up in Ohio for the solar eclipse, and did you know, I’d never seen Spring before?
I thought I had, because down here in Florida we do get some flowers and nice green leaves as the weather shifts from cool to hot, but the trees are never bare and the flowers just blend in with the rest of the trees and in comparison this Actual Spring was some sort of magical wonderland, I swear to god, I’ve never seen anything like it

I’m familiar with cherry blossoms- we do have some cherry trees- but not like this. This tree was entirely pink and stood out so much! No leaves or anything on the trees, just flowers everywhere!!! I see why people like spring and cherry blossoms so much, I think.
