I just finished a short book on “how to write scary”, since that seems useful as a skill, and man……..the author cautioned not to over-use fear signifiers because that can make a character come off as a wuss, and as an example he wrote a paragraph from the point of view of the most pathetic man possible……and when I tell you I was sweating and shaking reading that. there is something so wrong with me.

oh I feel bad that so many people are misunderstanding this. I’m afraid that I’m Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary posting again.

it’s so bizarre when animated American films are set in a certain location and then only certain characters have the accents of that place. It makes no damn sense!! like

image

WHY IS SHE MORE FRENCH THAN THE REST OF THEM???

WHY ARE THESE GUYS MORE SCOTTISH THAN THE KIDS??

(also, aren’t they Vikings or something?)

To be fair, almost everyone in Ratatouille does have a French accent. The real question is why Linguini and also all the rats sound intensely American

If it was just the rats I’d say it’s because the movie can be interpreted to mean that the rats understand but don’t necessarily speak human languages so the rat dialog isn’t literally taking place the way we see it but that doesn’t explain why Linguini has a rat accent

LINGUINI HAS A RAT ACCENT

Do we ever hear like

For sure that Linguini grew up in France tho?

It could be possible he’s just an American immigrant

I mean his name is Alfredo Linguini so I always assumed he was Italian

I’m sorry his first name is Alfredo?

What

ALFREDO???

he’s American you guys his mother was American it was mentioned in the beginning

I’m sorry, I’ve moved on to the fact his mother was going through her cupboard for baby names

Alfredo was a name before it was a sauce let’s go over the movie from the top again

This is Alfredo di Lelio (right) the inventor of fettuccine Alfredo, he’d come out to the table and make it in front of you by hand

The chap on the left is an airport

I think you might have your left and right mixed up, my friend

You can fight AI in indie publishing by leaving reviews.

Seriously.

Ai-generated garbage is flooding the self-publishing market. It works as a numbers game- put out ENOUGH fake crap and eventually someone’s aunt will buy them the ebook as an unwanted gift, and you’ll have made two dollars. This tactic works at SCALE, which means real independent titles are now a needle amongst a haystack of slop.

If you have read a book this year that has less than 5 reviews, your rating is an algorithmic spotlight on that needle.

A one sentence review helps. Really. A star rating helps if you really can’t think of anything to say, but if you can muster up even “I laughed at the part about the tabby cat” you are doing indie authors a favor like you cannot believe.

(Also if you left a review on one of my books this year I am kissing you so softly on your forehead and I adore you)

as a former indie author i cannot express how much even one single sentence review can mean to sales.

so if you care about supporting authors take a sec to leave one!

One of the universe’s great synchronicities is how Dungeons & Dragons podcasts revived popular interest in tabletop roleplaying at exactly the right time for all the ex-Homestucks to be like ACTUALLY this is my tiefling player character without changing a blessed thing.

@lonely-secundus replied:

Is this why there is an overrepresentation of tieflings on tumblr?

In part, yes, though “perennial tiefling player who you’re pretty sure is using the game as an informal group therapy session to work through some sort of gender thing” is a stereotype that pre-dates both Homestuck and Tumblr itself.

Yeah but literally the only one I know is Jesse and she’s the blue ranger. Neither of these facts are guaranteed to be true however. my maybe controversial opinion is that if there are even slightly competing alternatives, reliable and frequent public transport beats fast public transport

if one train is fast but gets frequently cancelled and loud and the alternative train is reliable, departs every half hour and is relatively quiet but takes twice the time to reach my destination i will take the reliable train over the fast train in 9/10 times. even if the fast train takes 30mins and the reliable takes over an hour

i will go out of my way to take trains where i know I won’t get stressed

reducing travel time will barely improve the quality of the service but having reliable and semi-frequent service and quiet rolling stock with air conditioning is very important for the service quality

that’s also why i despise buses, they are not reliable since traffic can easily cause delays, the ride quality is shit and they are loud

also seat quality is not important on regional services with <1h of travel time

once again the reliability is more important. the one time where the train gets cancelled makes the entire experience way more uncomfortable than having harder seats on a 20min route

even having to interchange between two reliable trains is more comfortable than using an unreliable but direct train

Just started reading Sherlock Holmes and all the adaptations are wrong. This man is a delight. He gets excited about hemoglobin and is ecstatic at the thought of Watson as a roommate. He purposefully forgets how the solar system works so he has more room in his brain for crime. He shows Watson the dirt stains on his trousers and he can tell what part of London they come from based on color and consistency. (As far as i can tell Watson didn’t ask, Sherlock just gets back from walks and tells Watson about the stains unprompted.) The text specifically says “Holmes was certainly not a difficult man to live with.” Why does every adaptation make him unpleasant and rude, he’s literally just eccentric. He’s such a goober, I love him.

My therapist (who knows my gender and is not an asshole!) Recently recommended me a JK Rowling book, and was VERY surprised when I said that I wasn’t comfortable giving money to someone who wanted me gone.

We had a conversation where I explained that Rowling was very vocal against the trans community and used a lot of her wealth to bail out transphobes and fund anti-trans agendas, and they just said, “I hadn’t heard about that- I just thought she was passionate about the female experience.”

That’s what they do, though. They say things that sound fine and normal and maybe even good on the surface to an uneducated third party and it kinda holds up until you start asking questions.

“Protect women and children!” Is a rly that any decent person can get behind. What nobody seems to do on their own is ask, “protect women and children from who?” And, “from what?”, and, “Is that fear realistic?” And, “has that actually happened to any degree worth considering as a systemic issue?”

Fun thing about football right now is that there’s a move called the “brotherly shove” that the Eagles do when they’re very close to scoring, where the whole team puts their hands on the ass of the guy with the ball and physically propels him over the line into the endzone for the touchdown, and all the other teams’ fans hate it because it’s got such a ridiculously high rate of success for the Eagles and doesn’t really seem to work for any other team. People are straight-up calling for this move to be banned, claiming it’s “unstoppable” and gives an “unfair advantage” but it really and truly is a skill issue. The whole league hates this move because it only makes the Eagles win more often and nobody else can figure out how to do it right

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, let’s talk about your posture-

there are things you should be doing now to prevent yourself from starting to look like 🥀

Why does it matter? Future you would like to avoid the pain, limited motion, and fall risk that goes along with worsening posture.

What’s the focus?

1. Keep the flexibility in your spine

2. Stretch the muscles in the front

3. Strengthen the muscle in the back

Here are some simple things you can do daily while sitting and when you get up to go into the bathroom or the kitchen

Keep the flexibility by doing these repeated movements: 10 repetitions several times a day

The goal is to give yourself a double or triple chin. Keep your nose pointing forward, don’t let it tip up or down

Thoracic extension- use a chair with a seat back that comes up to the level of your shoulder blades. Try to bend back over the top of the chair without arching away from the seat back and without extending your neck. If the pressure from the top of the chair is uncomfortable you can place a towel there

Stretch the muscles in the front by using a door frame. This one will feel good afterwards

If this isn’t enough of a stretch you can do one side at a time. If you have the right arm up step forward with the right foot and turn slightly to the left. Then do it on the other side.

Strengthen the muscles in the back by squeezing your shoulder blades together for a count of 10 and then repeating 10 times. You can do this several times a day Hint: Don’t lift your shoulder blades up

There are lots more exercises for strengthening your back muscles but this is a good starting point and easy to do. I like doing it while driving

Tips:

  • Do the best you can
  • If it hurts stop
  • Envision future you saying thank you each time you do one of the exercises

NOTE: I can do most of these with the cerebral palsy. In fact, a lot of these little exercises are automatically part of my physical therapy. My problem is I already have hyperlordosis, spine arthritis, and cervicogenic headache. These have helped me at least try to have a posture.

I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW GOOD THIS ADVICE IS

Life-changing OCD hack is learning that you can literally call poison control to check if you fucked up and took medications wrong in a way that could kill you instead of having a panic attack while reading reddit and quora threads for an hour. They won’t even be mad at you. Like obviously don’t do it every day or something but genuinely you can do this if you need to

as people turn more and more towards the internet as a first choice for information, poison control (which has rebranded as poison help? i think?) is seeing fewer and fewer callers

part of this is because the USAmerican birth rates have slowed, and the number 1 culprit for why you’d call poison control is kids under 5 put shit in their mouths all the time

but part of it is BECAUSE people are turning to the internet first

and you don’t have to! poison control is FREE and available in EVERY US STATE AND TERRITORY

they are staffed 24/7 365 days a year! they do everything they can to minimize wait times and they have an ENORMOUS database of medications, household cleaners, chemicals, pesticides, and MORE! and not only information on JUST those things, but how they interact with other things! they can even give you advice on if your pet ingests something they shouldn’t!

but poison control isn’t federally funded! they’re a frankenstein mishmash of state funded, federally funded, and a couple of other weird ones (like organizations helping with funding) just for flavor. poison control NEEDS you to be politically aware. keep a finger on local and state politics; if your state is voting to shut down their poison control center, make sure your reps hear about how pissed you are!

poison control saves lives, but even more than that, it keeps people out of emergency rooms and walk-ins when they don’t have to be. when Louisiana closed its PCC in 1988, people who called the PCC hotline were instructed to call their local hospital instead. the number of medically-treated poisonings rose by 42%…meaning ERs and walk-ins were flooded with people who’d taken, say, one extra pill of ibuprofen by accident, or got a bit of rubbing alcohol in their mouth, or got their dog’s flea medicine on their skin. stuff that was SCARY, sure…but wouldn’t have needed medical care at all if there had just been someone to tell those people you can just wash your mouth out, or wash your skin, or refrain from taking any more ibuprofen for at least 24 hours!

anyway help ur local PCC, put the pressure on your political reps, and if you ever have questions like “hypothetically what would happen if you inhaled iodine,” you can call 1 800 222 1222 and speak with a real live reassuring person any time day or night!

I saw something in the news today that truly took my breath away. If you have been paying attention to U.S. politics over the past few days, you’ve most likely seen this woman:

This is Bishop Mariann Budde, and on Monday (Trump’s inauguration) she led an interfaith prayer for Trump and the incoming administration. During the service she asked him to have mercy for LGBTQ+ Americans and undocumented immigrants. This was badly received by the Trump administration (as expected).

After seeing headlines about this woman, I read something that I wanted to share. In 1998 a man named Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay. I’m not going to get into the details of his death on this post, but please be warned it is extremely triggering if you do choose to read more on your own. Matthew Shepard’s death caused a lot of change in the U.S. regarding how LGBTQ hate crimes are handled, and laws that were passed to protect LGBTQ+ people.

Now you’re probably wondering what Matthew Shepard has to do with an Episcopal bishop. For years after Matthew Shepard’s murder, his family had held onto his remains, too scared to lay him to rest in fear of his final resting place being vandalized. In 2018, Budde had his remains interred at the National Cathedral, which is also the place where the interfaith prayer for Trump and his administration took place. The impact of this really had an effect on me. Budde could have led a non confrontational prayer service, and chosen not to mention the harm that will come to the people Trump and his administration are going after. Instead she chose to call out hate and fear in front of some of the most powerful people on the planet, and at a place that has such a large historic meaning to the LGBTQ community.

In the next few years there will be many challenges in protecting free speech, standing up against hate, and protecting those in our communities. But I would like to believe that for every Donald Trump and Elon Musk, there are people like Marianne Budde. There are those of us who can’t speak up for themselves, so it’s important for those of us who can to amplify our voices, even if it’s not the ‘popular’ thing to do.

And he said you should apologize. Will you apologize?

I am not going to apologize for asking for mercy for others.” - Mariann Budde’s response in a Time interview
