A comic to try and sort through some difficult feelings about being an artist and a reminder to not forget who you are.

Maybe.. we should be more grateful for what ’s brings us here. It’s not big accomplishment, but at least my latest event makes me happy and feels validated as someone who is deadly in love with drawing.

We shouldn’t compare ourselves with anyone because the sun and moon have their own time to shine.

Even if the moon is shining there’s still enough space for all the stars.

And even if yours is not bright enough to outshine the city lights, there’s going to be people heading out to darker places to look for it.

Not to sound like a fuckin hippie but please for the love of god start noticing and appreciating the natural world around you. You don’t have to go hike the entire Appalachian trail or anything and I get that not everyone has access to the outdoors for various reasons, but just fucking … look around you when you’re outside. Notice the sky and the sun and the birds and creatures. Start caring about them. I’m begging you.

You’re just using space on someone else’s hard drive.

I explain this to eeeevery patron who comes in to ask for tech help etc. I find ways to explain it, because it’s important.

“Oh ‘the cloud’ is just what they decided to call it. What it actually means is that you use the internet to connect to some dedicated computer somewhere where your file is stored, and then you can access that file, which is why it only works with an internet connection. You’re just renting space on a computer the company owns.”

Suddenly everything is less mysterious.

It lays out really nicely as 3-up spreads on A4 paper, so you can print, staple and fold it, then cut it into 3 zines. It made it really easy to print up 20 of them to trade at this art social thing I went to

Yes! I’m also gonna need that! Modern biker/skater OZ is so cool!

knives out is so good for so many reasons but I really appreciate how utterly, absolutely, devastatingly sad it is that Harlan didn’t have to die. he didn’t want anything bad to happen to Marta because of a mistake she didn’t actually make. he would’ve been fine. she was his friend and he died to protect her. what a perfectly executed tragedy.

The more I watch that movie the more that I think Harlan was just as flawed as the rest of his family.

He didn’t die trying to protect Marta. He died trying to bring his mysery novels to life.

Properly protecting Marta would have been following her instructions and recording something to insist it wasn’t negligence. Not suicide.

The entire Harlan family never actually listens to Marta - they use her as a prop. Sometimes as a demonstration of a “proper immigrant,” sometimes as a prop to get their inheritance back, and sometimes as a plot device in one final grand mystery.

Which is what Benoit means when he tells Marta, “You didn’t play his game.”

Fun fact: Government subsidies are required to make many industries profitable. Your taxes go to pay farm and chemical company owners who frequently produce more than can reasonably be consumed or preserved and must destroy product in order to keep profitable subsidies flowing in. Corn and grain are put to the torch, animals slaughtered and left to rot, and milk and chemicals poured down the drain because they’d rather destroy an excess than allow someone to have it for less than a 800% markup. It’s one of many reasons why we can’t “vote with our dollar” out of climate crisis or inequity. We must do more than petition our corrupt government. Act up. Act out. Disobey. Take action, even if it seems fruitless. Only through action will we create the change we need.

“According to Indian Country Today, in 2017, Destany “Sky” Pete, a member of the Shoshone and Paiute Tribes from the Duck Valley Indian Reservation in Idaho and Nevada, discovered that her tribe’s current health issues were linked to a lack of traditional foods, including the forgotten recipe for toishabui, or chokecherry pudding. She enlisted the help of Dr. Ken Cornell of Boise State University, who specializes in cancer research. Dr. Cornell tested four types of chokecherry specimens on uterine sarcoma cancer cells. Remarkably, only one sample – the traditional chokecherry pudding – successfully inhibited cancer cell growth. Within just 24 hours, the cancer cells began to die. Sky noted that the success of the pudding was due to the inclusion of the crushed chokecherry pits, which were a critical component of the recipe.” **Edited to add that she graduated from the University of Idaho today!**

I’ve I’m ever forced into the ground, I don’t want to be embalmed. No coffin either. Just toss me into the ground completely powerless. I wanna Rawdog my funeral. It will be open casket because there will be no casket. I will provide shovels for you all to dig the shallow grave. It must be 4ft deep. I was the chance to be found after rain. A garden is to be planted over me. Nothing but Hemlock. I don’t want to risk being disturbed before it’s time.

I trust one of the various rat detector detectors will be able to organize it. Whoever wins the blood games at the end of my funeral gets the inheritance. The biometric lock only opens if there’s enough blood in the soil of the fighting pit. Each of you may only bring 1 weapon and it must be made entirely out of some kind of stone. No metals no wood no plastics or whatever. Only stone. Glass is acceptable but you’re on thin ice. Ice is also acceptable.

Now then. Good luck everyone on trying to outlive me. If you don’t, I’ll make sure your funeral is just as unforgettable as mine, and that’s a threat. Don’t bother warning your loved ones, they’re already doomed.

Before COVID shut the library down, I was helping a little boy and his mom find books.

“What do you like to read about?” I asked.
“Dinosaurs!”
This is common request, but can mean different things, “Okay. Do you want a story about dinosaurs, or facts about dinosaurs?”
“Facts.”
I took him to the dinosaur section (567.9) of the juvenile nonfiction. He picked out a couple books, and I asked him if there was anything else he was looking for.
“Do you have anything on DNA?”
I had to think about that for a second. “I think so…but I’ll have to look it up.”
The boy beamed, “I want to find out how DNA works, so I can bring them back!”
“We just saw Jurassic Park,” his mom explained with a smile that did not waver when she added, “We didn’t learn anything.”

Can’t believe Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice in the 2000s

And in 2015 Emily Brontë released literary clsssic Wuthering Heights

Thank God someone paved the way for them…

if you think jk was the first woman author, you don’t actually care about women authors.

Mary Shelley didnt fuck on her parents graves for this level of disrespect

Murasaki Shikibu didn’t invent the novel for this.

Christine de Pizan did not sit down at her desk and write The Book of the City of Ladies, advocating for women’s education and finding value in women of all social classes and backgrounds, in 1405 for this.

🎶SHAHARIZADE HAD A THOUSAND TALES🎶

This……….isn’t even true in 20th century fantasy or childrens books? Pierce, Lackey, Applegate, McCaffrey, Bradley, Butler, whomst?

Casual reminder that

  • a woman was the first known author/poet in 2300BC - Enheduanna
  • the first novel in recorded history was written by a woman in 1010AD - Murasaki Shikibu
  • the earliest example of science fiction was written by a woman in 1666 - Margaret Cavendish
  • horror science fiction was popularised by a teenage girl in 1818 - Mary Shelley
  • a Scotswoman expanded childrens’ stories from moralising tales into anarchic adventures in the mid 1800s, well before it became popular in the early 20th century - Catherine Sinclair
  • the masked/costumed hero archetype that inspired Batman and Zorro was created by a woman in 1905 - Baroness Emma Orczy
  • And while she is problematic as all get out, we all know who is to blame for popularising Boarding School fiction (which is a huge inspiration of She Who Must Not Be Named) from the 1930s onwards - Enid Blyton

And do I even need to mention what a badass pioneer Ursula Le Guin was for women author in the fantasy/sci-fi genre?

Not to mention Agatha Christie is literally second only to Shakespeare in terms of works sold – 4 billion compared to JKR’s paltry 500 million

Mary Shelly did what

Mary.Shelly.Lost.Her.Virginity.On.Her.Parent’s.Grave.

Mary Shelley lost her virginity on her mother’s grave. Her father was still very much alive.

She did what now?

We have female authors who published before Rowling here on Tumblr. @dduane, for example! I read her Star Trek novels from the 80s and 90s as a kid/teen.

Octavia E. Butler wrote probably the most accurate dystopian novel in the form of Parable of the Sower.

The Lottery is a short story by Shirley Jackson that was first published in The New Yorker on June 26, 1948.

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote “Little House on the Prairie” in 1932

Harper Lee wrote “To Kill a Mockingbird” in 1960

Just saw somebody use the phrase “indirect incest” and I think my brain melted.

For context, this was about two sisters whose boyfriends were related to each other. Like these two sisters were out there dating men that they were not related to. And the men were dating these two sisters, who they were not related to. Nobody was related to anybody they were dating. But the fact that the sisters’ boyfriends were related to each other makes it indirect incest. I am going to eat glass.

This is “dating short people makes you a pedophile” type logic

I once joked to a friend that I should go flirt with the guy in our group who had the same first name as me. In a “haha wouldn’t that be funny” way, (like today I’d say “imagine the ship names!”)

Friend said, “That’s super incest-y, don’t do that.”

And nope, friend really meant “incest-y”, “like you’re almost related but not really, feels like that.”

👀

The same FIRST NAME is ‘incesty’? Does your friend know how names work?

I mean some parents just have bad taste in names. But naming someone Incesty is pretty bad.
