sorry to start discourse again but I’m going to keep making the comparison between maleness and whiteness when other transmascs try to genuinely argue that they’re being discriminated against because they’re male, until it sinks in

conversation that just happened: guy acknowledged that society is set up to let men succeed, and minorities are upset about this. sometimes they direct their frustration at individual men for being complicit in the system. guy argues that this is something that needs to be addressed and we need to fight back against anti-male hatred.

conversation that is also happening amongst white people: society is set up to let white people succeed, and minorities are upset about this. sometimes they direct their frustration at individual white people for being complicit in the system. white people also argue that “hatred toward white people” is a substantial problem that needs to be addressed.

what’s the difference? both are reactions to immense structural power, and the perceived aggressors are acting on isolated impulse without societal support. they face consequences for challenging someone who has maleness / whiteness on their side and are fighting upward against embedded cultural pressures. for all intents and purposes, the hatred is occurring in smaller communities outside the mainstream, where those expressing animosity do not determine the material conditions of the recipient, e.g. access to housing, job opportunities, etc.

there are intersections with each of these identities that will alter the circumstances, but with all other things being equal, two people expressing animosity toward each other who differ on one of these axes will experience the asymmetry of societal / institutional power. society will favor a white able bodied trans man over a white able bodied trans woman. society will favor a white nonbinary autistic person over a brown nonbinary autistic person. you can qualify your specific experience with other facets of your identity but you cannot outright negate the benefits ascribed to you by maleness and/or whiteness, no matter the level of attachment you feel toward that label.

does it suck to have people dislike you? sure does. does it suck to have people assume you’re part of the problem when you’re doing your best not to? of course. does this warrant a response on the level of “I’m facing *discrimination* for being white/male”? no, and I’m sorry that people in your community are being rude. but you need to understand that using terms that allude to widescale inequalities for something that is happening to you on an interpersonal level is at best naive, and at worst minimizing the constant struggle that other marginalized people go through on the other side of the axis - and someone’s occasional lapse in composure when they say something harsh to you in response to their daily confrontation with mind-numbing bigotry is not the point.

this equally goes for measures meant to correct for historical institutional & social inequalities: if you are genuinely looking at support services and opportunities for women and thinking that it’s a point of discrimination that you’re not allowed to access these now that you’re a man, please also consider the majority opinion in this country where white people believe that colleges reserving spots for black people is unfairly discriminating against them. the reactions to institutional inequalities, and the efforts to re-balance the scales, are not themselves discrimination warranting your contempt.

I think there’s a lot of people arguing in favour and against the discriminations which trans masc people can face which doesn’t have a full analysis.

Like yeah men as a social class don’t typically face the same discrmimination that women do, the same way that white people generally don’t face the same discrimination that black people do.

But perception has a lot to do with the discrimination that people face. There’s been a lot of cases of dark skinned black people going from the UK to the US, and then being treated as English (with respect) rather than Black once they’ve spoken, I even had this happen as a light skinned person (USians are really good at clocking blackness - the only people who have ever called me racial slurs) when I stayed in the US for a while and the cops were called on me for looking for fireflies.

The discrimination is about people percieved as trans men, rather than cis men. I think there’s not enough talk among trans masc people about the differences people have experienced. Like how in the book “Working Guys” about trans masculine sex workers, while they have varied experiences, one of the main points the book makes is that there’s just no-one who has really spoken about anything before, and it’s important to listen to what people have experienced.

There’s a wide range of different types of bigotries that trans masculine people experience, which can happen at any time in their transition, or not happen! A trans man who passes even before T and is respected in his daily life, shouldn’t be used to dismiss a man who has been on T for years and finds passing difficult, but still experiences discrimination due to his masculine aspects.

Many people when given a new tool try to make it fit everything possible, and that does lead to some people pointing at all problems they face being given one name, when it might have multiple names. Even some long standing terms for serious societal issues are used in areas they never would have been used initially.

There’s many trans masc people who have said that they feel unwelcome in the trans and feminist community, or in their local offline community once they have transitioned, which I think is a problem, there may be interpersonal issues, but much like how callout posts are now properly identified as harmful, it’s fine to call out other harmful behaviours. Many people experience mind-numbing bigotry on all sides, and it’s still not good for hurt people to hurt people, whether someone is trans fem or trans masc or neither.

Additionally with measures for correcting historical institutional and societal inequalities, if a trans man has lived his life as a woman up until 1 year ago, with all of the historical insitutional and societal inequalities which that implies, he’s not suddenly going to be given the full benefits of cis malehood on his transition? While it doesn’t mean there should be one of those shitty “femmes and afabs” things, there should still be understanding and allowance that there is a distinct lack of trans men positions of influence or employment, much like there’s a lack of trans women in positions of influence or employment. Living with dysphoria fucks up your life somewhat before you get it under control. It’s common for trans people in general to drop out of education.

Much like there are initiatives to include trans masculine people in areas traditionally considered womens’ healthcare, such as how almost all the vaginal healthcare people I’ve spoken to within the last year have asked me preferred terms for my bits, there should be ways to understand that on average a white trans man is not going to have had the same opportunties as a white cis man. In the mean time it’s fine for trans men to be upset that they’re no longer able to access help they may have needed. In the book “Working Guys” (it’s a good book!) there’s men who don’t transition until they have earnt enough money to pay for their transition and provide a buffer, even though they didn’t like the sex work they were doing, because they knew their earning potential would be massively reduced after transition. I don’t think it’s good to extend that notion of “If you transition you will be worse off”.

thank you! I really appreciate this reply and the counterpoints + great book recommendation.

did read the article to make sure it wasnt just clickbait title its just a long diatribe about how npd is bad person disorder and every nice or pleasant interaction you have with a narcissist is actually just them trying to manipulate you for their own ends. I’m so tired of this shit

i feel like im actually going insane with how much psychology media talks about personality disorders in ways where you can tell they *really* want to take a hard turn into eugenics

If you like it when your friend drives you places and you never ever thank them, they might think you’re not grateful even if you are. If you like it when your partner does this or that thing for you they won’t know that unless you tell them.

Tell people in your life hey thanks for driving me, that was a great dinner, I like your singing, thanks for helping me with that. They don’t automatically know that you appreciate what they do.

Reuters article about it

Nah, you really gotta read the article. They’re gonna force insurance companies to separate from the stupid mandatory specialty pharmacies that they own that they force anyone insured who needs a “specialty medication” to use. I used to be able to get my specialty medication at the regular fucking pharmacy, and so did everyone else before they started up this nonsense. They cost more, and I’ve never had one that didn’t fuck me over every single year when I have to redo my prior authorization. Like I have to get every specialty prescription filled in advance, even if I don’t necessarily need it right now, to have a stockpile of 2-3 months of medication in case they fuck it up again and I lose that buffer. Most people don’t have that buffer. Caremark, Express Scripts, Optum, and there so many more. Call your fucking congressperson and tell them to support this legislation. PLEASE.

do NOT shop at Horse Head Farms! Their items are incredibly overpriced (you can find grass, logs, etc for better prices) and this “alternative payment scheme” is actually signing an IOU. If you don’t know what that is, IOU stands for “I Owe You” and is a legal document that, when possessed, someone can force you to do anything. Literally anything. LegalKnight does a great video going into detail about it. According to this article, Horse Head Farms have just invested in building an auction house, possibly to sell off the IOUs they’ve acquired, so scummy CEOs could force you to work at their companies. Not to mention, their owners are incredibly sketchy, xBCrafted regularly tweets conspiracy theories and Hypnotizd invests in crypto

His name was Charles Hatfield and I’m not saying that you shouldn’t make a deal with him, but I am saying that you should be very clear about the terms and conditions

I think we need to fully appreciate the fact that the reason he “looks like the Devil” is that many depictions of the Devil in American popular media are specifically caricatures of this guy. Like, imagine being a con man and fucking up your hustle so badly that for more than a century afterwards people start drawing the Devil to look like you.

Quarantine was a bad time for everybody, so far be it from me to imply I had it worse than anybody else. But man.

I was 3 years into college…. and I could tell it wasn’t working. Grades were getting worse, assignments were late, internship opportunities were looking dire. I was all set to become a failure. I was gonna flunk out, and unless I found a job, my dad was eventually gonna kick me out onto the street. But I got lucky. Quarantine hit. The world went on pause. I had an excuse. I had time. I could find a solution, and work my ass off to push it through.

I started streaming full time almost immediately when quarantine went into effect. Mostly out of desperation. If I couldn’t make this work. If I couldn’t take advantage of the meager audience I’d amassed by spending my entire teen years shitposting… I didn’t have a plan C. So there I was, for four years. In that room. As much as I could, as much as my health would allow, I’d be streaming. That tiny room, not even 80 square feet, with a single, tiny window. That was my entire world for those four years.

After a year and a half, it felt like I’d made it. I was making money. I was saving money. Deciding to stick with streaming, I formally quit college, and started looking for my own place….. It took me almost two years find one. The housing market was in the shitter. There were few addresses available, and prices were high. And nobody was interested in renting an apartment to some nobody with no degree and almost no provable work history. The only thing I could do was keep trying. Keep working. My income was all there: I was registered with the chamber of commerce so I was legally a self-owned company. I had a stable income. I just needed more time to prove it. It had to go through the system. It had to look stable. I had to look reliable.

Those last two years, I felt so hopeless, all the time. I had no idea when I would finally get lucky and find a place to live. No idea when I’d finally be able to be someone. No idea when I would finally get away from my dad, who I was fighting with more and more. Every time I went to a place for an interview but didn’t hear back afterward, I felt crushed. Every time I would get depressed and become sick. As long as I was living with my dad, I didn’t have any future to look forward to. Four birthdays had passed since quarantine started. My body was growing older, but I wasn’t moving forward. It seemed endless.

That tiny room was all that existed. I had the feeling I would die there. It was my coffin.

It’s been six months now, since I moved out. I’m very happy with my apartment. It’s pretty large. At least five or six times larger than that room I spent those years in. I have a large bed. I have a large corner where I work. Work is going pretty well. I’m going out more. I’m trying to find out who I am. My therapist says I’m doing very well.

I never want to be in that room again.

Sometimes as a European you play an American game and even though you speak fluent English and culturally there’s not too much different you can Tell you’re missing some kind of cultural context

I had no fucking clue what a mormon was when I played the New Vegas DLCs

This post is not an invitation for you all to explain mormonism to me I am fine not knowing about this

I can’t put this in tags like a normal person because apparently Tumblr no longer lets you do long tags which is dumb and I hate it but ok. Long time ago when I was but a wee 14 years old kid living in a sleepy town in Northern Ukraine, one day my bestie told me: hey, have you heard about this new English speaking club at the city library? They say it’s run by two guys that came here on a mission all the way from America. And I was like: what mission? And she told me they were supposed to be Mormons. I didn’t believe her. I was convinced she was fucking with me because at the time I didn’t think that Mormons were real. I honestly thought they were fictional and only existed as a gag in South Park. And then a couple of days later those two missioners actually showed up to our English class to promote their little conversion club. Those poor men stood in front of a bunch of 14 years old and told us they were Mormon and several of my classmates said: wait, Mormon? Like in South Park?, and from their pained expressions you could clearly tell that it wasn’t the first time they had been asked that here.

Dudes shouldn’t have to prove themselves by having spartan greyscale homes with dollar store rubber shower curtains and a mattress on the floor. Do you know what life is like with linen

Being a dude raised with a certain level of socially enforced traditional femininity has imbued my ass with great wisdom and powers

  1. Sleeping naked is fine but pajamas protect your sheets better from your body’s natural sweat and oil and dead skin and junk so if you wear clean jimjams to bed your skin won’t break out as bad and your sheets will stay cleaner longer
  2. On the topic of sheets, dirty bedsheets don’t ventilate as well as clean bedsheets so washing them regularly (once every 1-2 weeks) will keep you warmer in the cold season and cooler in the hot season
  3. If you can get your hands on linen sheets- new, second-hand, pass-down, whatever- they’re incredibly sturdy, get softer and softer over time, and will last longer than your lifetime. They also wick sweat so you don’t wake up wet if you’re a night-sweat guy and are, again, pretty great for your skin
  4. Getting a proper bedframe extends the life of your mattress, will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer, offers additional storage space, and is easier on your back.
  5. A boxspring under your mattress will make it softer, too
  6. You can get mattress protectors that zip over your mattress to keep it clean and bedbug-resistant, too
  7. Your entire house will feel bougie and cozier if it smells good. Consider a reed infuser, or a plug-in wax melt. Trust me on this it turns a shitty studio apartment into a 4/5 hotel
  8. Stick some plants around. If you can’t sustain them, get fake ones. New ones are kind of expensive at home decor places but dollar stores and thrift shops have some pretty decent options usually. The human brain responds well to seeing plants around, you get depressed without plants. Stick one in your bathroom for that ritzy feel
  9. I know you’re tempted to go all black but dark colours will make your spaces feel smaller and bleak. Again, try thrifting a shower curtain in an interesting pattern, it brightens shit up
  10. Wash your face. You don’t have to do anything crazy you can just scrub some water on with your hands if you want but it feels really really good.
  11. Keep DIFFERENT SHOWER SCRUBERS for your FACE and your ASS this one is NOT OPTIONAL I will fucking find you
  12. Three in one shampoos are fine but it’s just shampoo mixed with conditioner. Having shampoo and conditioner separate lets your hair get moisturized before the final rinse and your hair will feel silkier. Scrub your scalp a lil too bro you get sweaty during the day. Shampoo for the whole head, when conditioning focus on the ends and let it sit a sec.
  13. You don’t HAVE to do a bunch of fashion research but in general sticking to clothes you Like The look Of, not just “whatever was on sale at target”, and spending some time planning out your appearance will make you feel better about yourself.
  14. What haircuts look best for your face shape? What glasses make your cheekbones stand out, or make your head look taller, or whatever? What are your options for facial hair? What’s your body shape, and how do you estimate flatter it? You don’t gotta, but it’s fun. It can be so so fun
  15. If you can see your veins, green means warmer skin tones and blue means cooler skin tones. This can help determine what colours look best on you. Your skin may also come off as cooler or warmer-toned in neutral light, too, if you can’t shortcut
  16. Stop buying white light bulbs for your house. It feels cold and depressing and washes you out so when you look in the mirror you feel sick. Stop it. Get warm-tone or yellow lights and feel warm and cozy. I want this for you
  17. There’s nothing illegal about using a lil concealer if you wanna cover up discolored spots.
  18. Skin products with salicylic acid kill off zits and junk. Like not 100% but definitely a game changer
  19. Nobody in the world has naturally bleach-white teeth, that’s a marketing lie, but you DO still have to brush regularly and toothpaste comes in a bunch of flavors now not just nasty mint. I personally am fond of strawberry
  20. This was a post for dudes but it’s actually for everybody now so if you weren’t raised with girl rules have at er

i just want to say that nobody should ever feel shame for the state of their living space, no matter how unclean or unsanitary it might get. if you’re in a situation like this, you know that if it was just so simple as to “take care of it”, you would have. nobody is happy or content living in squalor, and you’re not less of a person for whatever circumstances have led you to having to live like that. whether is because of mental health, physical health, grief, neurodivergency, lack of time, whatever - you are a person deserving of empathy, respect, and dignity. and an unclean space is never a reason you should be deprived of that.
