My friends and I used to do this thing where we’d dress up on a theme and go do something totally normal.

We dressed up as pirates and went bowling.

We dressed as vikings and went to the grocery store. The security guard told us we had to move our longship because it was illegally parked.

We dressed as Romans and went to Blockbuster. The staff chanted, “toga! Toga! Toga!” at us.

We dressed up all steampunk and went to the museum. Tourists kept taking our picture.

I used to do historical reenactment when I was at University. I would go to class before session as a Norman knight, and when the session was over me and some of my buddies I did it with would get the bus home in the same kit. Stop at the Tesco’s in full armour for beer and supper and ice cream, then get together at Irish’s place for a LAN party.

It’s enrichment for all involved.

I remember being told I was 900 years late for the battle, and asking the bus driver where the horses were.

Sometimes you’ve gotta take received wisdom in tabletop RPG design and do the exact opposite on purpose, just to see what happens. I’ve got a vaguely superhero-adjacent RPG I’m working on right now that flips the whole “the player characters’ actions should never result in an NPC’s death unless that was their explicit intention” thing turnways and makes it literally impossible to engage in physical coercion of any kind toward another person without some non-zero likelihood of accidentally killing the target in the process, and let me tell you, it’s resulted in some fun “okay, how are we going to do this” conversations.

This is insane to me. Please there has to he someway that we can put these posts into a translator and make them comprehensible.

The post is saying that people often label things that trans people do as being a result of growing up as a certain gender even when they wouldn’t make that type of claim about a cis person acting the exact same way. In fact some people might celebrate that type of person or see them as normal or unremarkable if they didn’t know they were trans.

Look. I’m going to be honest with you. Adopting that hard anti-plastic surgery stance while trans people’s lives and right to transition is at stake is absolutely horrendous timing. Knock it off.

Plastic surgery saves and rebuilds lives. While anti-aging culture and lookism are both detrimental to society, it’s important to remember that plastic surgery is healthcare.

People in the tags are nottttt getting it. I’m saying you should address the societal influences that lead young women to seek plastic surgery before you seek to villianize the plastics field and/or limit access to healthcare to anyone. Plastic surgery is healthcare.

I am not making this a ‘trans people versus feminists against lookism’ issue. You may require plastic surgery in your lifetime as well. Anyone could. The line of where plastic surgery is frivolous and driven by vanity or necessary for maintaining or creating a greater quality of life is far thinner than you think. That nose job may have been motivated by Eurocentric beauty standards or it may have been motivated by the desire to correct a deviated septum. I am saying that at a time when we are all losing our bodily autonomy and access to medical care at an alarming rate, now is not the time to be writing treatises on why access to certain forms of healthcare is bad.

im a trans man having top surgery this year and if a woman wanting a boob job had to go through all the exhausting loops I have with therapists and psychiatric evaluations for nearly 2 years then I wouldn’t feel better, I’d feel sorry for her. we BOTH should have been able to go to the doctor and said “I want my chest to be different” and to have it be done without a hassle, because we’re adults and we get to chose how our bodies look. a lot of times your self image just can’t be cured with body positivity and good self talk. no one else gets to judge someone for what they do with their body regardless of the reason.

Some people have no idea exactly what plastic surgery entails and it shows

The person who stitches your face back together after a motorcycle wreck? Plastic surgeons

The person who puts skin back on your body after a house fire? Plastic surgeons

The person who evens your tits out after breast cancer so you can have a workable bra Ever Again? Plastic surgeons

Plastic surgery can be purely cosmetic but they worked out a lot of the cosmetic stuff based on what they learned from emergency care

Plastic surgeons work in the ER on everything from reattaching severed body parts to fixing your broken nose - and yes, putting your face back on after an accident is also cosmetic surgery

“Oh obviously I didn’t mean actual medical emergencies” - didn’t you? Dysmorphia isn’t a trans-exclusive condition. Anyone can get it on any part of their body… which, yeah, includes that nose job you want to call frivolous

If the way you try to fight a social issue is by attacking medical care, you’re already in the wrong place; people who do get plastic surgery just for their looks are a symptom of the issue, not the cause

Making it even harder for the people who need plastic surgery to get it isn’t going to do a single damn thing to the propaganda machine that spews out all that lookism you hate

It’s just going to make more people miserable while the machine keeps telling them they’re worthless and ugly

Bodily autonomy is important and yeah, it’s a ridiculous argument to be trying to make when people are already not able to control their own healthcare, but it’s also fundamentally not going to do what you want it to do

The change you want won’t happen by making it so hard for people to change their own personal body that they give up. It happens when the mechanisms that tell people they must change their bodies in certain ways to be human are broken down to nothing and forgotten

This is a hard, complicated systemic change that needs to happen, and saying “plastic surgery bad” is very easy

The question is, what are you trying to do? Something easy, or something that actually makes a difference?

Light dinner cuz I’m not that hungry tonight

@intoxicatedinkeep recipe is very adjustable and I recommend experimenting to find what you like best, but the basic ingredients are just 1-2 cups of rice, 2/3 block of tofu, a quarter of some cabbage, 1 diced pepper, half a cup of chorizo, generous pour of maple tofu sauce, stir it up and top it with green onions, or peanuts for more crunch! It’s a good dumpster recipe, so you can add or substitute ingredients to your liking and it’ll still be good. This recipe is also super scalable, so it’s also a great thing to store in your fridge for later meals when you’re too tired to cook. I am kinda calculating the measurements in my head right now, but that’s the general gist of it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

👍 thanks!

Preoccupied by the way polyamory is treated with hate. I’ve gotten hate for even approaching the subject in the past. There’s so much violent rhetoric and ideation surrounding it, so much genuine bigotry and prejudice towards people who practice it. But if you mention that, you get met with dismissal. It’s not a big deal. You’re taking it too seriously. Who gives a shit. Get over yourself. It is something that people respect so little that they refuse to even see it as a legitimate identity. Even left-wing progressive types will make jokes tantamount to thrashing blue-haired SJW snowflakes when it comes to polyamory. They’re gross. They’re weird. They’re always cringe. It’s never the people you want to be poly. I would rather kill myself. You’d think simply changing the structure of a relationship wouldn’t be a problem, but even the most ardent defenders of equality can begin to say some pretty awful shit. Problem is, fundamentally, it is not seen as legitimate. It’s not seen as deserving respect. There’s all this handwringing about how these relationships are doomed to fail in order to justify this kind of thought and speech. It’s bizarre to watch unfold. Frankly, it’s the same sentiment and a lot of the same jokes as those cracked about nonbinary people. We’re at a point where we’ve firmly accepted that everyone has a right to do what they want within the structure of social norms, you can take any side you want and do it with whoever you want. But as soon as you step outside of those norms, as soon as you go beyond the boundaries of social convention to find what suits you personally, everybody becomes a bitter reactionary.

Edit: Now with an ID from @a-captions-blog! Thank you for writing it!

[Art description: A Pokémon-themed comic featuring OP as a Pikachu. Long description follows.

1. The tips of Pikachu’s ears are shown with text that says, ‘I’m a Pikachu / My world is filled with lots of cool stuff. Sometimes it feels like anything is possible!’ Under this is a collage showing a Charizard, a Pidgeotto, a Nidoking, an Eevee, and an Ivysaur, all in the background as the Pikachu looks up in wonder. Text reads, ‘All sorts of types, all sorts of attacks, all sorts of Pokemon.’

2. Text says, ‘But…only two ways a Pikachu’s tail could look.’ Two boxes in the upper corners show the male and female Pikachu tails, respectively. The male has a rectangular end to his tale, and the female has a heart-shaped end to hers. Text continues, ‘So then, what am I?’ A large drawing of the narrator Pikachu is shown, with an arrow pointing to their tail, whose end is split somewhat like scissors and doesn’t match either the male or female drawing above.

3. Text says, ‘Too pointy to be [female], too much of a V-shape to be [male]. I thought there was something wrong with me.’ Under this are three cascading panels showing the Pikachu from below at an angle emphasizing their tail. The second panel shows mel further away, and in the final panel she have disappeared entirely. Text on the panels reads, ‘I felt / very, very, very / alone.’

4. Text says, ‘But then, something happened. I found others like me.’ The art shows the narrator reaching out to another Pikachu. Under this are three other Pikachu. One has a rounded tail, one has a tail that has been stitched up to be rectangular, and one has a tail with a slight spike at the tip.

5. Closeups are shown of each of the tails from the previous panel, with text that says, ‘Round tails, scarred tails, spiky tails.’ Under this is a drawing of the Pikachu all hugging with lightning coming from their cheeks. Text reads, ‘They told me nothing was wrong with me, and I wasn´t alone anymore.’

6. Text says, ‘There are many ways a Pikachu’s tail can look. I’ve heard there’s at least over 30 different variations.’ Under this are two panels. The first panel shows the narrator lying on their back on a background of male and female symbols. Text reads, ‘Some days are still hard.’ In the second panel, the Pikachu with the scarred tail is shown with text that says, ‘My friend tells me her tail used to look just like mine. It was taken from her.’

8. The narrator is shown sitting and looking upwards. Text reads, ‘Some trainers won’t accept Pikachu that aren’t [male] or [female]. They alter our tails without our consent. But things are getting better. We are making change. We’re fighting so that our tails will be left alone.’ Under this is a panel showing the four Pikachu running happily towards the right. Text reads, ‘We’re all on a spectrum. Every tail looks different; anything is possible.’

The final text reads, ‘This is a comic about intersex people.’ The watermark in the lower right says @ PostManic. \End descriptions

We forgot about it

I once signed up to participate in a study on how depression affects memory, forgot I was meant to go do it, and when I emailed to apologise to the PhD student running it she basically told me that a) she was very used to this happening and b) the weird irony of her theories’ correctness making it very difficult to arrange proving them had by now gone from infuriating to hysterical

I went to the Grand Canyon when I was depressed and I literally forgot the whole thing. Like, the only reason I even know I was there is that I have photographs of myself standing in front of the Grand Canyon with dead eyes but i have absolutely no memory of it

People talk about depression like it’s just being sad all the time but straight up your brain stops working and sadness is just one of the many, many consequences of that
