castielelfresita on tiktok is an art thief who purposefully covers watermarks and refuses to give credit, deleting comments of people rightfully calling them out. I don’t have tiktok, but if anyone who follows me or sees this does, I would highly suggest blocking them or seeing if you can report them.

They’ve stolen a work from my friend @linkerbell and covered her watermark, has lied and claimed she removed the original post (she has not), and is deleting comments from other friends of mine crediting Bee and calling the thief out. It’s one thing unintentionally stealing art and being ignorant of providing credit/having permission, but it’s another, disgusting thing to have it be so intentional and motivated to remove and refuse proper credit. Please be weary if you use tiktok.

Sure the US propaganda machine is powerful now but ngl it was worse at the height of the Cold War.

The Kennedy administration ordered 41 ballistic missile submarines whose only purpose was the wholesale destruction of Soviet cities and called them the “41 for Freedom”.

Like, say what you will about Fox News and CNN, they can’t hold a candle to that kind of spin.

Oh and don’t even get me started on how John F Kennedy brought the world to the brink of nuclear annihilation over the Soviets pulling a tit-for-tat on medium range missiles.

Ok so I’ve got myself started.

The western narrative around the Cuban Missile Crisis is bullshit from top to bottom.

It’s been framed for 60 years as JFK bravely standing up to unprovoked aggression against the Soviet Union and persevering through superior resolve.

The reality is that the Soviet Union brought those missiles to Cuba as a direct counterweight to US missiles in Italy and Turkey of similar range, accuracy, and payload.

The whole crisis ended more or less by accident as both leader’s concessions literally crossed in the mail. Kennedy secretly promised to remove the Jupiter missiles from Turkey and Italy (a move that the USAF already wanted because they viewed the missiles as useless and obsolete) in exchange for Khrushchev withdrawing his missiles from Cuba.

But Khrushchev had already ordered the removal when he received kennedy’s word. (He was elated to accept, as this was entirely the purpose of the whole stationing)

This trade was kept secret for the better part of 50 years and while widely understood to have taken place in inner policy circles it was only declassified in the mid 2000s.

In short, rather than stoically calling Nikita Khrushchev’s bluff, Kennedy gave the USSR exactly what it wanted, but only after threatening to destroy the entire world and coming damn close to actually doing it.

I would say conservatively that half of Americans don’t know about them.

What’s even worse is that generations of people–including people who have since become politicians and political reporters–grew up believing the “badass chicken-playing Kennedy” myth and now think that that’s how “great men” are supposed to handle such crises.

Important addition to this, the nationalism we are currently facing is a direct result of the propaganda that was created in the ideologically warfare of the cold war. Both sides lost that war, we’re just losing it slower.

hey nice misleadingly cropped screenshot you got there, would be a shame if someone shared the full context

I follow @tributary and it didn’t make sense to me that this is a take they would have, the fact that this post has double the notes of the one it misleadingly screenshotted to make it seem like op agreed with the reblog and the tags is saddening.

there is no reason to crop OPs response except to paint them as supporting anti-intellectualism, you could have easily screenshotted the response it got or the reblog with those tags, instead of conveniently cropping the image in a way that makes it seem like op agrees to not trust academics.

op is literally criticising these people who trust social media influencers instead of academic experts with a fucking degree.

Rent control is on the ballot for California voters this November.

I uh, get that tumblr isn’t exactly sorted by geography, but this is a huge deal.

It’s a huge deal even for people who don’t expect to be personally affected by it – rent control is a protection against the poorest people living in a city being forced out, and that’s just bad for everyone. When you have a city where only medium well off to rich people live, you get their service employees coming in from a suburb an hour and a half away (blech) or else you get people stacked three to a room. Or people holding down a job or three while trying to earn enough to get off the street or, well, out of their parents’ place or away from the abusive partner they can’t afford to break up with. Point is, a lack of housing that people can just keep living in at the same price, means a lot of bad things for society, and we probably aren’t going to socialize housing within the next ten years but maybe we can get rent control back.

Man, one characterization of Vader that I love but rarely see is: Vader as deeply religious.

Because from an in-universe perspective, that’s so weird! Vader and the viewer know that the Force is not a matter of faith, and that it does in fact give him powers up to and including the ability to accurately see the future, but the galaxy at large doesn’t know that and his fellow Imperials definitely don’t. I think the point of Motti, besides introducing Vader’s ruthlessness toward even his own faction, is to demonstrate that Force use is not just a known factor of the Star Wars universe.

In that context, Vader is inexplicable. Not only does he have uncanny and inscrutable powers, like those the murdered Jedi are rumored to have had, but he is the only figure in the Imperial military who seems to talk about his religion. At least among the military leadership, he’s not secretive about it; if he’s got to leave a conversation to hunt down Obi-wan, he’ll just come right out and say that he has supernatural knowledge which he needs to go address now. He wields a banned, antique Jedi weapon. He has several times invoked the Force while speaking to his officers.

In-universe, the general public doesn’t know why he’s like this! The Empire isn’t a theocracy; besides banning the Jedi religion, Emperor Palpatine doesn’t really seem to make a lot of overtly religious policy choices, and I don’t think the general public knows if he subscribes to any specific faith. Except for people who know what the Sith are, Vader just seems like an extremely devout sole adherent to a religion that is all but dead, its other practitioners hunted for treason. He’s like if the president had a weird murder pet who was a Catholic nun, only Catholicism was banned and all other church officials had been murdered by the government.

also like if catholicism was banned because it was DEFINITELY fake lunatic bullshit that so-called ‘catholics’ made up specifically to seize power from the former government, except the murder nun has just turned your manager’s blood into wine right in front of you and you’re both just standing there watching him die horrifically in the middle of your fucking office

This is excellent meta, also Vader-as-murder-nun is an eerily accurate analogy

Since the whole thing with NaNoWriMo has gone down, I’ve noticed that one of their former sponsors, Ellipsus, has cut contact with NaNoWriMo because they do not support their stance on AI; I didn’t know what Ellipsus was, but upon further research I’ve found that they are a writing platform that works a lot like Google Docs and Microsoft Word, only with a heavier leaning on the story-writing aspect and connecting with other writers - and they also completely denounce any use of AI, both in the writing process itself and in the use of their platform. I really appreciate that.

Since this is the case (and since I’ve noticed Google has begun implementing more AI into their software), I’ve decided to give Ellipsus a try to see if it’s a good alternative to Google Docs (my main writing platform). It’s completely free and so far, I’ve found it simple to use (although it is pretty minimal in its features), and I really like the look of it.

I figured I’d spread the word about this platform in case any of you writers would want to give it a try, and if you do, let me know how you like it!

This sounds great, I’ll give a try tonight!!

one thing tumblr has unironically done to improve my mental health is completely rewrite how i view disgust as a concept. there is no higher compliment to me than being told i have something wrong with me and should be ashamed of myself when i’m just living my life in a way that is perhaps odd and hard to understand, but ultimately as harmless as you can get in our society. which probably wasn’t the intention of all the advice i got in therapy to reframe my negative thought patterns as more positive ones, but it’s doing great things for me.
