You guys … No. If the only thing I ever teach you is that lichens, moss, and algae are not hurting trees, then this entire endeavor will have been worth it. Who out there is looking at a fucking tree, seeing something growing on it, and stewing over it? I am imagining some man noticing a tree trunk for the first time in his godforsaken life and thinking “hmmm … That can’t be right.” Like not looking at a single other tree trunk, just worriedly turning it over in his head. Lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, can’t stop thinking about that weird fuzzy stuff they saw on a tree earlier. Then he googles and sees this and can finally relax. The world is right again. Maybe next time he is out he looks at another tree and *gasp* there it is again! And suddenly it’s everywhere: moss in the cracks of the sidewalk, lichen on the telephone poles, a slime of green algae on the subway wall. Suddenly the world is alive, and he no longer has to worry.

They are just hanging out :)

Here’s a a little sapling I photographed with the thickest plushest moss coat. it’s his puffy winter jacket

He moss too thick for he gotdam he

He moss to big for he gotdam he

I just spend the night at the botany open house showing people the herbarium, and how mosses open up their leaves when you put a drop of water on them. I needed to make a little guy, for science.

OHHHHH MY GOD 💚💚💚

Just a reminder that there are whole sections of the world (including the US) where it is too dry for any of these and the only time you’d have seen them is in fantasy art or science class books. Most moss you can find in the US southwest is at Michaels.

My friend, that’s just not true. And that’s kinda the point that I am getting at with this post. It is so easy to miss the lichens (and moss) around us simply because 1) we don’t know what we’re looking at, and 2) they are so common that they sorta just fade into the background. Now certainly if you go outside looking for fluffy green stuff you won’t see tons of that, but there are tons of lichens and mosses adapted to hot dry environments–hell lichens tend to dominate compared to plants in those extreme environments! May I direct your attention to the not 1, not 2, but 3 volumes of The Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region?

I highly recommend going on a lichen hunt–getting up close and personal with your local rocks, trees, bushes, walls, cacti, what have you–and familiarizing yourself with your tiny symbiotic neighbors. I can almost guarantee that you will be amazed at what you find!

Also fun fact: the moss they sell at craft stores is often spray painted lichen. It desiccates and holds its shape better long-term than moss.

ok really hoping someone can help me out with this because its a bit weird. first of all, important data:

do your feet hurt (like pressing on a bruise) after like half an hour of walking

yes, im in pain most of the time i walk somewhere

no, it takes a couple of hours at least

op are you ok???? my feet only hurt after hiking for like 6 hours???

See Results

ok heres the deal. for most of my life, every time i have walked or stood up for more than 20-30 minutes, my feet hurt. not uncomfortable, PAINFUL. like pressing on a bruise painful. if i walk/stand for more than 3-4 hours its a SHARP pain like blisters, except there are no blisters and none form later (unless my shoes were rubbing or something, which if im wearing my usual trainers they dont)

I always thought this was normal and that everyone just grits their teeth through pain to do fun stuff like go to a zoo or a museum or a theme park. but i told my dad about it recently after a day out and he was like “what the fuck go to a doctor thats not normal my feet only feel uncomfortable right now they dont Hurt”

so i want to know how common this is. does anyone else get this? and what might be causing it?

information that may or may not be significant, just including it in case any of it is relevant to a condition i havent heard of:

i have been looking into EDS and i think i might have hEDS, so idk if any of this is related to that. my dad also thought the foot pain might be an autism sensory issues thing?

if anyone can relate to any of this please tell me about your experiences and what causes it because that would be super helpful

thank you

striving-artist:

Oh shit, Tim Walz.

“I know basic gun safety isn’t a threat to my rights. It’s about keeping our kids safe,” Walz said last month about his evolution on the issue. “I had an ‘A’ rating from the NRA. Now I get straight ‘F’s.’ And I sleep just fine.”

He was beloved by the NRA. When Parkland happened, his daughter was 17. She asked him to do more. I guess he doesn’t do shit by half because not only reformed gun control, he donated all the money the NRA ever gave him to charity, and now has straight Fs. In 2016 he was a ‘top 20 politician for guns’ He turned it that fast.

I know this is the website of catholic guilt structures, but the idea of a politician that changes their mind, doesn’t pretend it was different before, admits he was wrong, and then gets shit done? I adore that.

I did not expect him, so I have not done my learning yet, this was one of the first things I saw. And Damn.

it sucks so bad that ‘lightning magic’ in every media is just some pathetic little strands of electricity. i wanna see some LIGHTNING. show me a magic setting where lightning magic lights up a room like the sun, and the bolt is only visible as an afterimage burned into your vision. I wanna see someone cast lightning and have the thunder rattling the room and shaking everyone to their core. i want lightning magic to be a split second blast of so much power it leaves everyone’s senses reeling. c'mon guys don’t you know what real lightning looks like? we can be doing so much better than this.

I agree with this but I’m always far more upset when plant magic is incredibly weak or used exclusively for healing. Like… Have you ever seen what a tree can do to a rock? What plants over the course of a millennium can do to an area? Or what some plants can do when they grow on a living thing? Now imagine you could do all those things in an instant, anywhere you wanted. Imaging growing an oak tree in someone’s chest. Imagine growing new trees that are very resistant to fire suddenly to block an enemy spell. Imagine filling the air with pollen so thick it causes the enemy forces to suffocate. Plant magic should be the scariest magic in any setting and instead it appears gets limited to “oh, I can’t hurt anyone. I must defend and heal those I care about.” No. Rip off that guy’s limbs with strangle vines before he even gets a chance to attack your friends.

SO many elemental/natural force magics are boiled down to particular tropes and i hate it!!! like what was listed above, having nature related magic depicted as frail or used exclusively with caring for others in mind.

personally. water being depicted as calm, working around the opponents moves bugs me so much. its cool in theory, but where are the water magic users who crash into you like a WAVE!!! pulling and pushing with a fierce, storm driven tide until you’re completely senseless and don’t even know which way is up!!! unreleting attackers that completely overwhelm you, don’t hesitate to keep dragging you down even when you stop kicking. using kelp/seaweed to strangle someone within an inch of their life. there’s something so awesome to me about water magic – because water is EVERYWHERE. water makes up most of the world!!! once you’re in its domain, there’s no getting out.

alternatively… where are the support fire users. fire has significantly helped the human race. Where are the fire users running around trying to help cauterize the fresh open wounds from battle

i grew up in a big city and i rly think it’s important to the best of your ability learn to be okay sharing spaces with people who are not in that moment pleasant to be around. people who smell bad. screaming children. people asking you for money. teenagers noisily loitering. people talking to themself or to you in disorganized ways. even in a socialist utopia with free health care and housing and robust harm reduction programs, there’s always going to be people being disruptive and uncomfortable in public and you’ve gotta be okay with that and be polite.

current fan creation landscape is kinda like if you went to a party with a homemade cake and everyone takes a slice and silently thumbs up at you with no attempt to start a conversation except for occasionally some guy sits in the corner with a tape recorder critiquing the cake as though he was a restaurant critic and another guy is handing the cake to an uber driver like “yeah i need you to find a restaurant that makes cake like this so i can have more of it” and the only person that’s talked to you in 30 minutes is a very sweet little guy who was like “hey i liked your cake” and then ran away apologizing for bothering you the moment you said thank you.

someone brought a cake analysis robot to feed the cake into to determine the exact ingredients and supposedly it can spit out the exact same cake. and if you’re like dude. what. then they’re like well if it bothers you you should have made more cake. i’m hungry and i deserve cake. and you’re like dude we’re at a party.

I just KNOW romans would go crazy for american fair food. Like have you ever seen blooming onions? Funnel cake? Cheese curds? Gigantic boats of chili cheese fries? Good ol claudius horatius would go hog wild trying to hold all of those at once without spilling all over his tunicus

Chili fries would blow Roman minds as tomatoes, chilis, and potatoes all came from a continent the Romans didn’t even know existed (but which, as Italy has proven, they would have gone ABSOLUTELY MAD for).
