usa2024election:

I’m seeing a lot of the same arguments and thoughts about this election as we had in 2016. I don’t want to see that repeated. Neither do you. So we have to come together and vote in record numbers. We defeated MAGA once. We have to do it again.

booasaur:

Something really amazing happened in France, and I think it’d help us in the US to learn about it. Forgive the long read, but I think this is genuinely great both because of what happened and how.

So as some of you might have seen, in a decision historians will debate for years (mostly to figure out just WTF he was thinking, even though he is alive right now and can be asked), the French president, Emmanuel Macron, currently in power and THREE YEARS before the scheduled election, seeing the far right rise in popularity decided to dissolve the assembly and hold snap elections.

577 seats were up for grabs. Remember that number. Since half of that is 288.5, 289 seats are needed for a majority.

The first round happened last week and boy, was it bad. The far right made HUGE gains. It won or was in first place in so many races. And Macron’s party ended up third!

Overall, this is how things ended up after the first round:

  1. Far right bloc: 33%
  2. Left bloc: 28%
  3. Macron’s centrist party: 20%
  4. Conservatives: 7%

The way the French system works is that if a candidate gets over 50% of the vote, they win outright, and some of the far right did manage that. But, many races went to a runoff.

Immediate projections after were that the far right bloc might win anywhere from 240 to 310 seats, a catastrophe.

A shameful swing to the far right leading to the first time they’ll be in power since the 1940s? Yes, but maybe not??

This is where things get interesting.

Unusually, a lot of these runoffs are 3-way, instead of a simpler 2-way choice. And in pretty much every case, that helps the far right.

So on June 30th, the night of the first round, this is how things went down:

Immediately, the left parties put out the call: anywhere they were third, they withdrew and their voters would go over to whoever was running against the far right candidate. Their goal: form a “republican front” to block the far right. The far right cannot get 289 seats.

Macron’s bloc was not so…motivated. Different people put out different instructions: in some places, if they were third, they should drop out, but only to help the center left, not far left, in other places, see how far you are, only then drop out, that kind of thing.

The conservative party simply said they won’t drop out and won’t give their voters instruction either way in races they’re not involved in.

Late night developments:

More people in Macron’s party are now beginning to realize the situation and starting to coalesce around whichever candidate can beat the far right one. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, from Macron’s party, says clearly the priority is to block the far right. BUT, some Macron spokespeople on TV say they’ll form a coalition only with the center left and conservatives, splitting the left bloc if needed. Some individual Macronists still saying they won’t drop out, even if there’s no hope of winning.

Lol.

So, now July 1st:

Only half so far. In one race, where the sister of Marine Le Pen (the far right leader and the face of their movement) was leading, the third place Macronist refused to bow out.

Excellent quote from another Macronist:

Perhaps realizing the same thing, that Macronist in the race against the Le Pen sister now drops out.

In some places, third place Macronists are dropping out DESPITE Macron bewilderingly telling them NOT to?

Halfway through the day:

Of the 311 3-way or 4-way runoffs, the number is down to 135 because of these candidates dropping out: 121 Left, 56 Macronists, 1 conservative.

Oh, there was this, in case people had any doubts about how terrible the far right are:

And to show the selflessness of the left:

July 2:

The deadline to decide if they want to stay in a runoff is today.

A dozen new third place Macronists who said they’d stay in have now dropped out. One got a call from both the PM Attal AND Macron to drop out, signalling the dawning understanding of the importance of this moment.

Even some conservative party members are now backing the left candidate who faces the far right.

A Macronist who had 30.55% of the vote in the first round and came in third to the far right’s 33.11% and left’s 32.73% and who would have been tempted to stay has dropped out.

The deadline to stay in or not has now passed.

Look at these far right shenanigans!

Macron still being a freaking loser:

July 3rd:

In the end, of the 311 3- or 4-way run offs, only 91 left. Some polls come out that have the far right getting between 190 to 220 seats.

July 4th:

New polls say the balance of the voting itself isn’t transferring between the left and center and predictions have risen for the far right, now predicted to get between 210 and 250 seats.

July 5th:

New polls again, left voters now predicted to do better transferring vote to the centrists, decreasing the far right projections again.

However, scandalous reporting emerges: while Attal was trying to fend off the far right, Macron was not only NOT taking the far right seriously, he was undermining efforts to defeat them. His team shrugged off the first round results and celebrated a BIRTHDAY as the results were still coming in?

July 6th:

A few runoffs happened yesterday, nothing much unexpected, some left and center wins.

July 7th:

The day of reckoning. At this point, the expectations are that the far right won’t come close to that 289 number but could still easily have the most seats.

GUYS.

It’s over and the left are in the lead!

A LOT of cases where a leftist or centrist was 2nd in the first round and now won.

Amazing:

SO many lessons to take from this.

First, you have to vote! You have to. You can’t do anything without voting. The freaking French, who’ll protest for anything, are showing up to vote. If you’re trying to achieve any kind of result and it’s not going to happen by January 2025, you have to vote now.

But just as importantly, the left and center (and even conservative) parties made very key decisions. They were all lucky that Attal, who Macron chose, saw the big picture, bigger than indeed Macron could. A stupid selfish centrist leader could have still ruined everything if it were up to him.

TL;DR: After a disastrous first round in the national French elections where the far right was on the cusp of taking power, the left and center formed a strong coalition and through the power of voting and unity, overcame the far right AND their selfish centrist president to win.

booasaur:

my period is back again and id like to take this moment to remind everyone with a uterus to avoid using tampons at all costs, if you can. a recent study was conducted with 14 different popular brands of tampons, revealing that every single one of them contained toxic metals such as lead, arsenic, and more.

I’m a cis male but I’m reblogging this to save lives.

i sincerely appreciate it! and i agree, being aware of this danger could genuinely save people’s health! menstruation is rarely talked about and when it is it’s treated as something disgusting or embarrassing, so many people will just quickly buy whatever products are on the shelf and get out of the store asap.

which i understand, youre on your period, there’s too many choices on the shelves to read them all and it sucks being in public. but, if you have the opportunity, please consider getting reusable menstrual products instead, like medical-grade divacups or washable fabric pads or ones made from organic materials. they exist! and theyre much better for you than popular store bought ones.

always be aware of what products you use on and especially in your body!!!

omg??? Another source here

Quote, “For the moment, it’s unclear if the metals detected by this study are contributing to any negative health effects. Future research will test how much of these metals can leach out of the tampons and be absorbed by the body; as well as measuring the presence of other chemicals in tampons” But like, why take the risk??

And from the paper itself, “we found measurable quantities of several toxic metals, including Pb, which has no known “safe” exposure level.”

seeing all the 14-17 y/o queer kids who don’t know what v for vendetta is…. u mean the blockbuster film written by two trans women about a masked vigilante who decides to singlehandedly take down a fascist alternate version of england set in the distant year of 2020… and his driving force was getting justice for a lesbian who he never met but whose diary he found, who was separated from her wife before being killed by said fascist gov…. and it stars natalie portman…. okay

and they’ve never been more relevant

“People shouldn’t be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.”

There’s strong subtext that V is a trans man and A)the lesbian from the diary or B)her wife.

frankly I prefer the movie over the comic, for three reasons:

1) lewis prothero as a rush limbaugh/glenn beck/bill o’reilly type is both more applicable and way funnier than a 1940s radio propagandist

2) it has stephen fry as gordon detriech, and makes him explicitly gay and pretending to be attracted to evey as part of being closeted than actually attracted to evey and having sex with her while she hides in his home.

3) the movie came out in 2005; that is, only four years after 9/11, while the Iraq war was still in full swing, and while xenophobia and Islamophobia were not just acceptable, but tacitly encouraged by the administration at the time. which makes the following exchange even more poignant and sweet:

Evey: [seeing a book in a glass display case] What is that?
Gordon: It’s a copy of the Qur’an, 14th century.
Evey: [shocked] Are you a Muslim?
Gordon: No, I’m in television.
Evey: But why would you keep it?
Gordon: I don’t have to be a Muslim to find the images beautiful or its poetry moving.

just… the easy acceptance of it. the idea that a religion that he doesn’t believe in and that has been explicitly outlawed in-universe is a source of beauty. I’m not Muslim, either, but that particular moment really stuck with me emotionally.

Love this movie

pls love yourself and stop pre-ordering aaa games

this is a joke but people in the notes are missing the point, so id like to try to explain something… I’m in the games industry, i know a lot of people who worked/work in triple a company positions.

preordering a game does *not* say “i trust this dev and they deserve my money to use to make the game that much better”

what it says is “hey boardroom, i will throw money at anything with this logo, even before i know what the game is like”

that boardroom sees that trend. they see theyve made their money back within 2 months of the game being announced… so the next time a lead comes to them and says “we would like to make this game, heres a budget and a timeline” the execs say “well last time we gave you 100 bucks and a full month, but your fans dont really /care/ what game you make, as long as it has our brand. so heres 75 bucks and 3 weeks. make it marketable”

this means more “pre-order exclusives” like cosmetics or different art, filler stuff that a side team can pump out in hours. every store, every platform will have their own version.

pre-orders do nothing but incentivise the shitty money-sponge practices we all hate in games. the point of a pre-order used to be to ensure you got your physical copy, but with most games being digital license anyway, that worry is unrealistic.

However when you wait for reviews, what you show that boardroom is “what we put out actually matters. if we make a shit game, we get shit sales. when we only give a team 2 weeks and a fiver we get shit reviews.”

so… love yourself, stop pre-ordering triple a games.

It definitely wasn’t a joke and this is a very good addition to my post, thank you!! You explained really well what I didn’t feel like doing with my one sentence post 🙏

Did you know in Europe it’s standard practice to vaccinate chickens against salmonella? That’s why they store their eggs on the shelf at room temp. We can’t do that in America because we don’t vaccinate against salmonella in chickens. Because it’s considered too expensive/not cost effective.

I wonder if you can buy a vaccine in the US. It’s a really awful disease for the birds, I wouldn’t want any of my babies going through that.

I own a pet portrait of a Irish wolfhound that I found in an antique shop.

It’s a really good pet portrait of a dog, the dog looks so happy and the artist’s style is pleasing. In the shop I turned it over. On the back is the artist’s signature and the year it was painted. That year was 1986. It suddenly occurred to me that the dog in the portrait must be dead by this point and the owner who commissioned it must be dead as well. Someone who loved their dog enough to get such a great portrait of them made wouldn’t part with it so they must have died, that’s the only reason it would be here. I was so horrified looking at this beautiful portrait of a beautiful dog.

It occurred to me all of the 19th century paintings of dogs in my favorite museums are portraits of dead dogs commissioned by dead owners. That portraiture is haunted by nature, a snapshot of a living thing that is loved and will survive long after the subject is no longer living and the person who loved them has gone.

Then I remembered my favorite Gary Larson comic.

Anyway, I bought the painting and it now hangs in my cat’s room. My cat has a room because I love her very much. I want to commission a portrait of her.

why would you assume someone who commissioned a painting in 1986 is dead now??? That’s not even 40 years ago, they might even still be in the workforce

@bagel–bytes also me referring to 19th century dog paintings in museums was referring to 19th century dog paintings in museums, like one of my favorite paintings:

Portrait of an Extraordinary Musical Dog by Philip Reinagle (1805)

It suddenly occurred to me that the adorable dog who the owners had taught to play the piano was long dead but the painting of the dog proudly using its extraordinary talent remained two centuries after it was captured.

I’m sorry for responding like this but I’ve got so many responses to this post implying I am stupid and have no concept of the passage of time. Perhaps it’s my wording of the post but I’m not implying 1986 was eons ago, just that the painting was a sentimental object I could not see the owner willingly getting rid of. Also, people can die at anytime.

Thank you for leading me to this! It is sad to think these dogs are dead but so sweet to know they were loved in their lifetime. They have their own form of immortality here with us in photograph and painting. Some of them may have been separated from their name but they have never been separated from the affection you can feel radiating through their likeness.
