So, true story. Many, many years ago, I got fired from my first job, at a thrift store. I had just turned 21, and I just started rapid-fire applying to everything I could.
And one of those job applications was for a school bus company. I wound up getting it, it paid 12 bucks an hour, that was a lot at the time. And what’s more, i was pretty good at it.
Most of the buses were the usual American nose-out-front type, but we had 2 of the flat-nose, rear-engine types. I was always drawn to anything mechanical that was weird, unusual, or old. These were all three.
In addition to being an absolute dream to drive, they had an overhead panel! It had, if memory serves, marker lights, a strobe light (in illinois, school buses have strobes sometimes for use in fog), cabin lights, and a couple of fans.
And i used to just flip that shit. Just to do it. And then one day I’m driving the middle schoolers home and one of them spots me doing it, and he asks “Are you just doing that because it’s fun?” I’m 21 and this kid has me dead to fucking rights. But i’m also the cool bus driver. And so I just go “Yeah” in like, the cheesiest cool-adult voice i can manage. And this 11 year old tells me “I can’t blame you.”

The deep history and why I shake my head at people who were toddlers when ao3 was conceived think that they’ll get anywhere with arguments about fandom purity.
Like, there’s a ton of shit on ao3 that I don’t bother with because it is very much not my thing but I am deeply grateful that ao3 exists as it does because the things I do like, even the super fluffy g rated fics, would be considered just as “bad” by various religions and governments. And if I want to be able to read sweet gay coffeeshop found family or wish fulfillment time travel fixit featuring complex qpp and gay ships, the best guarantee of being able to do so is a place where everything goes. Because my “non-problematic” innocent fluff is absolute perversion according to some people. I know because they yelled at me before I turned off anon comments. And even the country I live in used to require unhappy endings for queer characters if it allowed them at all in many forms of media.
I absolutely avoid the kind of fic that ao3 was founded on and I am still deeply grateful that it exists.

There is a Muslim revert on TikTok who is getting exposed for lying about their ethnic identity while also using their religious identity to speak over Palestinians who disagreed with them and I am honestly so sick and tired of seeing people get away with talking over Palestinians just because they happen to be Muslim.
