I heard reference to something about how all anime are required to have good looking cabbage because of That One Time. So simply looking up “anime cabbage” I found the source.
Some harem anime way back in the day had an episode where the characters cooked, and they animated cabbage so terribly like this it left a bad mark on the anime community forever. Apparently this is part of the reason why all food usually looks good in anime, even moreso than the regular show sometimes. With cabbage being especially well drawn.

i love finding poetry in the mundane, and yesterday i stumbled upon something that just hits that spot
So, my partner has an old phone- It served them for many years now, but it has one issue: Charging it is hard. Their current charger is hanging on by a thread (literally), and can barely do its job. The phone and the charger came together: They’ve never used another charger for said phone.
Now, they’ve tried to replace the charging cord several times. But it doesn’t matter how much they’ve searched what damned specific charger the phone uses, none of them work. They finally decided to bring it to a phone shop and ask what should they use.
The guy at the shop looked at the phone for a bit, and explained: “The port itself is broken. The charger you have works with this phone because they’ve mutually broken each other into the same shape, in a way that no other charger is shaped. The port itself has corroded in a way that only accepts the charger that shaped it like that in the first place.”
And while this is of course a frustrating situation for my partner, I feel like there’s a metaphor here. I could write a goddamn story about this. These two half-broken old things have been together for so long they’ve destroyed each other in a way that keeps them from working with anything else. They’ve hurt each other in a way that barely keeps them functioning together, and have been rendered useless with literally anything else.

Trump, the multiply indicted crime president who incited a violent mob upon the capitol, is now President. He has all the qualities you hate about Biden, AND more, except he and his administration have even less reason to be sensitive to the wishes of their democratic constituents. He is a puppet for the far right and white supremacists and christian nationalists. I really shouldn’t even have to go over this- we LIVED it already. Genuinely asking, is this what you want? Because frankly I do not think 4 more years of Trump is worth it over Biden. Your hands are not clean, this is the future you want to choose. I just don’t understand why.

If you were doing anything tangible in the world, it would be affected by the laws and policies you live under–the ones that will determine whether and what your kids eat at school; and what they learn there; and how your communities and protests are policed; and the conditions in the jails; and how likely you are to see the inside of one for sheltering undocumented people or providing abortion pills or DIY HRT.
If you were doing that work, you would know real people for whom a second Trump administration would mean deportation or forcible detransition or quitting college or going hungry, and you would need to be able to look them in the eye.
If you were doing that work, you would know that working with other people to achieve a goal sometimes requires compromising, even on issues that are important to you, but that getting things done, even incrementally, is worth that compromise.
If you were doing that work, you would have the experience of making things happen in the real world–gardens planted, children fed, houses built–and you would know that getting your hands dirty working is so, so much more satisfying than sitting alone and keeping them clean.

If you’re new to me yelling about this: my neighbors feed a feral cat colony but provide no other care to the colony like neuter/spay or vaccination. They free feed the cats, which attracts skunks, and they have (at the moment) about 20 cats in the colony, which attracts coyotes.
My dog has been skunked twice, she can’t be outside in our yard unsupervised for even a minute because otherwise she’ll try to eat cat shit because there’s cat shit everywhere in my yard because the neighbors also haven’t provided litterboxes or a sandbox for their ferals (their entire yard is paved) and if she has to go outside at night I need to clear the yard for coyotes before I let her out even in the small fenced area by our bedroom.
Also there are fleas fucking *everywhere* and even though my dog is on medication to prevent fleas I need to de-flea her twice a week in the summer; this is the case for every dog owner on the street.
The street I live on has a speed limit of 25mph but I hear cats getting hit frequently, so frequently that we have a resident group of crows who hang out and wait for them to become roadkill.
I have a collection of photos on my phone that show kittens with broken legs, kittens with missing eyes, kittens with horrible ear mite infections, and I have a dedicated shovel that I use for moving cat corpses that show up on my property. The cats that die on my property die from abscessed wounds from fights with other cats, respiratory infections, renal failure, and injuries from being hit by cars.
My spouse is immune compromised, and while toxoplasmosis is not a serious risk for most people, it IS a serious risk for people who are immune compromised (as are all the other infections that cats can potentially carry), which means that it’s unsafe for me to grow vegetables in my yard for us to eat and it’s unsafe for him to work in the yard.
I’d love to maybe open my windows at night and keep down the electricity costs of using the AC, but I can’t because the entire side of my house that faces my neighbor’s yard reeks of cat shit and piss year round.

Last week I was walking my dog as a neighbor around the corner was pulling out of her garage; she paused and rolled down her window and pointed at the cats on her lawn and said “Head’s up, my cats are weirdly aggressive about small dogs and they just got let out so they’re full of energy right now” and I nodded and crossed the street and didn’t yell at my neighbor but *the temptation was there* because A) why are you letting your aggressive animals roam and B) Why are you letting your cats shit all over the neighborhood and C) Why are you exposing your owned cats to the risks of the large and territorial feral colony that is a literal stone’s throw away from your house?

People acting like slavery was good at literally any point in history kinda drive me crazy. There’s been many different types of slavery and indentured servitude all throughout human history all with a lot of difference and nuance to all of them and all of them have been bad. Like it’s fundamentally wrong to take a person’s personal ownership of their own body and life away from them and/or to make them work for no compensation against their will.
Slavery has been a bit different in every society that has practiced it and it is always a different kind of bad with that core immorality of stealing a person’s personal autonomy from them at the center of it. People throughout history have always preferred owning themselves to being owned by others. There’s no ethical way to own another human being.
Like people talk about slavery in ancient times like more modern examples of slavery should’ve been more like that. No, they shouldn’t have. Because they shouldn’t have been practicing slavery at all. Perhaps a third of the Roman Empire’s population was enslaved. It was incredibly normalized. Did that make it right? No. That was a third of the population that could legally be killed or sold or raped by their enslavers at any time for no reason. That had no ownership of themselves or their labor.
And to be clear, slavery still exists and it’s still bad. The excuse now is just that it’s only being done to prisoners. Like all the forms of slavery before it, this justification does not make it right. People being punished for their crimes, whether you think prison time is a justifiable punishment or not, are still people. They need to be given control over what work they apply to do and be paid for their work. This is basic stuff and yet. Forced unpaid labor is still happening. It’s all bad. It’s all nuanced and and complicated and different and changes with culture and time and it’s bad.
Like as someone who loves studying history I hate watching other people who study history try to justify these things. Face your actual history. There’s a lot of bad in it. We can’t change the past but we sure as hell can stop ignoring it.
