the average person’s understanding of the “squirrel” could stand expansion. most people think of grey squirrels and red squirrels. urge them to think a little harder and they might come up with chipmunks and flying squirrels, while asking “i mean, do those really count?”

prepare yourselves.

first up, red squirrels and grey squirrels (classic):

chipmunks (nightcore ass animal):

african pygmy squirrel (the smallest Squirrels):

thirteen-lined ground squirrel (fancier than you):

prairie dog (insanely intelligent and social):

marmots/groundhogs (the Biggest squirrels):

flying squirrels (how does she do it):

Indian Giant Squirrel (And why he ourple😂):

there are 200+ species of squirrel out there their family is one of, if not the most diverse of the rodents

“Of course I know about squirrels,” you say. “My back yard is full of them!”

Friends, this is the range of the southern FLYING squirrel:

And even if you live in the area, I bet you’ve never seen one.

Wait what’s a buildings fire evacuation plan if you aren’t supposed to use the elevator to get down

You go down the stairwell/fire escape. Is that weird?

But what if you have a walker or a wheelchair??

in america at least, in this situation, there isnt one. either your loved ones or the firemen can get you out using the emergency fire escapes or stairs, or you die

That’s fucking horrific, thank you

“fun” little story:

last summer my friend who is an amazingly talented artist and i were in this super tall building, and she’s in a wheelchair and i’m pushing her around the room. it’s an art exhibit and some of her art was chosen to be showcased there and so it’s all fine and dandy until suddenly an alarm starts going off

a FIRE ALARM

everyone starts running for the stairs and my friend just looks at me with this forlorn look on her face

“i can’t go down the stairs”

but i’m a stubborn bitch “i’ll carry you”

“what about my chair? it’s too expensive for me to be able to get another one if i can’t get this one back”

“i’ll carry that too”

and i did. we went to the stairs (by then most people from our floor were gone) and i lifted her up in a fireman’s carry over my shoulder and then lifted her chair up and used the ridiculous amount of adrenaline that was coursing through my veins to make it down approximately 20 half-flights of stairs until we met some people exiting lower floors, one of which who kindly took the chair. I changed positions so i was holding my friend bridal-style which was, somehow, easier and the person who took her wheelchair (with her permission to handle it of course) accompanied me to the ground floor and then out the doors

basically there is no real protocol for people who can’t use the stairs in an emergency. it’s up to the people with them, if anyone, to help them or the person to somehow make it down the stairs alone, unassisted

thank fuck that it was just a faulty alarm system, because if i was unable to carry her down those stairs and the building was on fucking fire???? then i don’t know what would have happened to her, but i don’t think it would have been very good.

it’s fucking ridiculous and ableist to the absolute max.

I use a cane. When I did a day-long fire safety training at my northeast American university (UMass Amherst), I asked that exact same question: “what am I supposed to do if the fire alarm goes off and I’m in my lab on the twelfth floor?”

the fire marshal hemmed and hawed for a while and then said to take the elevator- you’re supposed to leave it free for the fire department to use and they want able-bodied people out fast not waiting for elevators. if the fire alarm has just gone off the building probably hasn’t suffered enough structural damage to make using the elevator dangerous, and modern elevator wells are heavily reinforced. many large and high-trafficked buildings on my campus have fire rated elevators that link in with the fire alarm system so they won’t let you off on a floor with a possible fire.

if the elevator isn’t working, wait in the stairwell and call the fire department to let them know where you are. modern stairwells are also heavily reinforced- it might not be pleasant but modern building code usually requires fire-resistant stairwell doors in office and big residential buildings, also to help firefighters get in and out safely. older buildings’ stairwells may or may not be retrofitted with fire-resistant doors but a stairwell is generally the safest place to wait if you can’t get out.

what happened to your friend was horrible, and i’m very glad you were there to help her out, but you can absolutely use the elevator to evacuate if it’s not shut down. those don’t-use-the-elevator rules are for abled people.

This is GOOD TO KNOW. why do they not tell people this??

Okay, firefighter here. If you are not physically able to use the stairs, and the elevator is NOT compromised, use the elevator. But you MUST be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that the elevator is NOT compromised before you get into it, because there is always the chance that once you get into it, you may not exit it. Power could go out. The elevator may actually BE compromised and you just couldn’t tell from where you were until you were in there, and it suddenly shuts down on you. Something else could happen.

Understand that once you enter the elevator, you could POTENTIALLY be taking your life into your hands there.

It is NOT LIKELY, to be perfectly honest. It’s only in a pretty catastrophic scenario - think the Twin Towers, USA, on September 11th - that the elevators will be compromised and out of service. But there is a NOT ZERO PERCENT CHANCE and you need to understand that and accept it.

As for leaving the elevators free for the firefighters, okay, here’s the deal. Unless your nearest fire station is literally right next door? Your first on scene fire truck is NOT likely to be there on scene and needing that elevator before you get to the ground. It takes us TIME to find the address, gear up, and drive to the building. Then we need to hoof it into where the elevators even ARE, so YOU HAVE TIME to use the elevator to get down to the ground floor… BUT ONLY IF THERE’S NOT A RUSH ON THE ELEVATOR! And THAT is WHY we don’t tell people this shit. That’s WHY we tell people to NEVER USE THE ELEVATOR… because every self-entitled asshole will use it because they don’t feel like walking, and then put YOU in danger by delaying the elevator’s arrival to you.

IF, however, the elevator IS compromised, or you just can’t get it to come for you, or whatever, and you either don’t have anyone with you who has the adrenaline fueled BALLS to be able to toss you over their shoulder and hoof it down the stairs with you - because, let’s face it, that is RARE AS FUCK, then HERE IS WHAT YOU DO:

You call 911 and tell the call taker that you are in the building that has a fire alarm going off, and you are not able to evacuate because of a physical disability, and you tell them what floor you are on, and EXACTLY what stairwell you are waiting at. And the very FIRST thing that the firefighters are going to do once they arrive, if it is, indeed, a REAL emergency, and not a false alarm, is come get your ass and bring you down. Whether that means carrying you down the stairs, or whether that means locking out the elevators so that no one else can override them and coming to get you themselves, they WILL come get you FIRST THING if it is a real event. And if it is a false alarm? You will probably be the first person who is not involved with the building to know, because the call-taker is going to stay on the line with you until you are under someone’s care and out of danger, or until the scene has been sorted out as real or false, and you are out of danger that way.

These are pretty standard operations in the fire service throughout the United States. There may be some minor variations based on specific municipalities, but, for the most part, this is pretty typical: LIFE BEFORE PROPERTY. So, as long as SOMEONE knows where you are - hence why you call 911 - Firefighters will come get you. You are NOT alone, and you have NOT been abandoned. I PROMISE. It’s like, our whole reason for doing the shit we do: to save lives and to break shit. Sometimes, we get lucky enough to do both at the same time.

High rise fires suck ass, and I always hated them. But the very FIRST thing I asked anytime we got one was if we had “any entrapments” - which is what we call anyone who could not self-evacuate for ANY reason. We ain’t leaving you behind. And yes, your friend who doesn’t have the stamina to carry you down can stay with you, too. Because I would never ask that of someone, honestly.

Also, just a little FYI… MOST fire alarms are false alarms. Not to make anyone complacent or anything, but, yeah. Most of them are either system malfunctions, someone accidentally hit a pull station, or someone burned popcorn in a break room. So don’t let a fire alarm freak you out until you need it to - by smelling or seeing smoke or flames.

i have had multiple nightmares about this very thing because NOBODY BOTHERS TO ACTUALLY TELL WHEELCHAIR USERS THIS STUFF

weird anti ideology finally leaking out into the mainstream

I’m so exhausted by all of this.

I think we’re seeing the consequences of surveillance, honestly. Like they’re policing themselves this heavily because they’ve never had privacy before, not from their parents, not from their peers, not from advertisers, not online, nothing. And with all that constant and conflicting criticism, there are no consistent rules for when they’re going to be attacked so they’re responding by making elaborate, false rule-sets as a coping strategy. LIke “maybe, if I act this way, I’ll finally be safe” but it doesn’t work so they get more desperate.

Add on all the school shootings in the US, inaction on climate change, and a pandemic that was allowed to rip through schools unchecked, kids and young adults have a deep sense that their lives are disposable. And they’re right! Our society is systematically hostile and abusive to children in so many ways! However, the only child abuse society gets riled up about is pedophilia. Adults act like pedophilia is the only kind of child abuse that counts as abuse.

And that’s why I think we are seeing kids stretching the meaning of pedophilia. They are looking for language that encompasses all of the kinds of abuse that they’re experiencing. All of the emotional abuse of children is normalized, quite a bit of physical abuse is normalized, and the lack of privacy, agency, and bodily autonomy is all socially enforced. The truth is that all of these other forms of abuse can and do lead to sexual abuse, too. These kids are on to something, but it’s getting deflected and warped by the fact that they still live in the dangerous environments they’ve been abused in. I think more specific language will be empowering here and will also bridge the gap between the current generation of young people and other anti-violence movements.

So if you are a child or young adult who resonates with any of the above, I want you to know that as a child abuse survivor, I believe you when you say that you’ve been abused. I think the anxiety about fandom websites and queer people and kink is misplaced because strangers don’t usually have the structural power and access to you to hurt you but I know that there are people in you life who do have that power and I’m worried about you. I think ao3/queer/kink are just the issues that you feel safest speaking up about. I see you speaking up and I think there’s more going on.

So what I can do for you, as a random stranger on the internet, is give you some resources and language so you can start to articulate your experiences and find solidarity with others.

Some terms you might find helpful:

Here’s a copy of the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child. The US has refused to sign this but it’s still a good idea of what the rest of the world believes you deserve and what we know will help you thrive.

Here’s a copy of the power and control wheel for child abuse. Power and control wheels are commonly used in many forms of victim advocacy to help map abuse. To be clear, we count these things as abuse because we know from research that they are traumatic. Many laws have not been updated to include all these forms, so you’ll notice that many of the things on this wheel are completely legal even though we know they are harmful.

Additionally, I’m including a zine I found on peer support for suicide ideation. I know that growing up, my friends and I were always told to tell a trusted adult but we didn’t have one and ended up trying to help each other through some really awful shit. This is a guide written by someone with a similar experience and it details ways to informally support someone who is feeling suicidal.

I’m so so glad to see a response to this other than:

  1. “lmao antis, amiright? 🙄🤪”
  2. “Gen Z is sooo stupid because they’re too privileged to know what ~real~ pain & abuse is!”
  3. “Gen Z is sooo stupid because TikTok brainrot mental illness otherkin China mindcontrol cummunism virus 10,00,0000,000 dead!” or
  4. “hey king. I saw your tumblr post about how Gen Z are trash and I just wanted to let you know that I agree. although I myself am a zoomer (i know ugh) i am on your side. ‘one of the good ones’ as some may say. btw I never even noticed how big your brain is till now but its awesome”

This is a real problem with real causes. Things don’t just happen for no reason because a group you don’t like is inherently worse than you or incapable of making good decisions.

We are like this because of the unprecedented cultural conditions surrounding our development & socialization!!!

I think it’s also worth noting that in the US there has been a major push in schools to devalue & defund subjects that would help these kids develop critical thinking skills. If you don’t know how to process information in an analytical way, you rely on your emotions and instincts – which are not always correct in assessing the content. When school overworks these kids & tells them that art and English are a waste of their time and won’t get them very far in life, it’s easy to see how these kids will reject those subjects and embrace reactionism. They’re genuinely exhausted from all the expectations put on them, which is not conducive to the “sit down and really mull it over” kind of work that critical thinking requires.

And I also 100% agree that kids are abused, exploited, and generally undervalued in our society. They are also taught that sex & expressing sexuality is one of the worst things they can do (whether directly from a parent or indirectly from the wider cultural attitude towards sex) and sexual abuse is often (as the person above said) the only abuse that gets validated by adults. So you get a whole group of kids who will police their own sexuality and don’t know how to effectively question whether they have the full picture about those subjects. They are not taught to think for themselves. When someone else is found thinking for themselves and says something that seems alarming to these kids, the ones who have not learned to exercise critical thinking will react instead of consider, and are more likely to attempt ostracizing and shaming their peers. They reject media that seems problematic because they never learned how to analyze what’s being said or how to engage with problematic themes in a critical way, or that doing so is a valuable practice to begin with.

It is, in part, adult society failing to teach our children the very basics of independence & free thought. By doing so, we create children who will grow up to be those same reactionary adults who don’t foster critical thinking or free thought because they never learned how to do it either, and they don’t see the problem in forcing everyone to prioritize their own comfort & worldview.

weird anti ideology finally leaking out into the mainstream

Listen, I wanted to join the military too. I really, really did. But if your motivation for joining the military is anything except going somewhere far away and killing people, rethink.

If it is getting away from the situation that you’re in, if it’s the ability to serve your country full-time, if it’s camaraderie and wearing a uniform and the opportunity for college and/or job training, if it’s physical fitness and learning to live with other people who are really different than you, heck, if it’s fully paid-for travel and the ability to do cool things like respond to disasters and fight wildfires…

JOIN THE NATIONAL CIVILIAN COMMUNITY CORPS OR A CONSERVATION CORPS INSTEAD.

AmeriCorps NCCC is a residential, team-based national service program. It’s free. They provide all travel, lodging, food, and training. They even pay you a stipend. At the end you get money for college or job training. Almost everyone 18-26 gets in. If you want to be a team leader you can be older than that.

You travel around the country for 1-2 years with a diverse team doing anything from building parks to trail maintenance to serving with a food pantry to disaster relief to cutting fire line to building houses.

If you have any questions I was a team leader with this program. I am happy to answer them.

lots of stories about being possessed by demons and forced to do evil things against your will, not many about being possessed by angels and forced to do good things against your will

I think you could actually write an incredible horror story about this actually

if you get possessed by a demon and start doing evil things, everyone’s immediately like “oh no this isn’t like you, this is so sinister, we must put a stop to this and restore your free will” but if you get possessed by an angel* who’s going to stop you? who’s going to want to stop you? your friends are either going to approve or they’re going to start resenting you and cutting ties…

and I specifically don’t mean this happening to an originally evil or villainous character, just like, a normal person with an average degree of benevolence and selfishness, succumbing to a gradually escalating series of good deeds that offer no pleasure or relief that they never would have chosen

I really hate to do this to you, but I really do think this could be. a kink thing….

I have neutral news about literally anything

The thing is, an angel never would force a person to do things against their will, even if they found themselves possessing a person for some reason. Forcing unwanted actions upon a person (breach of consent) is an evil act, in and of itself. An angel would likely attempt to persuade the person they’re possessing to do good, but they wouldn’t force them.

See now but that’s stupid. Humans recognize “good”/not evil violations of consent all the time. We snatch poison out of the mouths of children, pull people away from ledges, and overpower violent attackers all the time and consider that to be “good”. We apply coercion on a societal level all the time and, usually, ascribe “goodness” to it when it seems to serve a greater good (ex. taxes, food safety regulations). So either breaching consent is always inherently evil and the concept of a greater good is invalid (in which case taxing the rich or taking poison from a child are wicked acts) or breaching consent is a lesser evil than allowing greater harm to happen (such as the child dying) or enabling more important good (ex the maintenance of roads).

If we define an angel as cosmic force for the nebulous concept of “good”, then it’s either wholly incapable of any degree or moment of wickedness, however small, and therefore completely useless, or it’s able to assess a relative value to good and evil acts and may do so on a system not immediately apparent or relatable to humans.

i am shrunken down and brought to the gnome world and when i attempt to assimilate to their culture I use an acorn cap as a hat and they all laugh cheerfully at my silly mistake of wearing what they use as a bowl like a cap and though this is a transgression that would have humiliated me in my human life I am instead laughing alongside them at my humorous misunderstanding

they ask me what I would like to eat and knowing that gnomes enjoy fruit i ask for my favorite fruit, an apple, and they all laugh raucously and say that i must be very hungry indeed to desire an entire apple rather than just a small chunk, and i go along with their joke and say that while my body may have shrank my stomach has not! and they all guffaw with delight until their faces turn red and see that my request is met and we all sit around a toadstool and share many apple slices together

over my time spent with the gnomes, my antics are still regarded with much delight. though i am past the age in which i am confused by their customs and norms, i occasionally pretend to be clueless about simple and easily understood things, such as shock at how toads are as tall as I am. they all continue to laugh at my feigned surprise, and sometimes join in, asking me if I need any help distinguishing what berries are for eating and which are for painting. i laugh, too. there is a sense of grace that comes with my shortcomings amongst the gnomes. they are entertained by my misunderstandings, yes, because life is to short to not be jolly.

i wake up one morning back at my original size. the small cavern in the roots of a tree that i lived in is destroyed in my sleep. my clothes, tailored from cut-up scraps of fabric, are shredded around me. i am a human again. i am horribly embarrassed.

the gnomes of the community gather around where i sit, all looking at me and exchanging glances with each other, none of them speaking the obvious. i can no longer stay here, now that i am not their size. but i was part of their community. i became one of them, indistinguishable from these people only from my past. how am i supposed to return to the world of the humans now? there is no life left for me there. that is not a life where i may fish for minnows in a babbling brook and feast off a bounty of raspberries. i am distraught. i cry.

my community comforts me. friends, all minuscule to me now, pat me wherever they can reach, nimbly dodging the tears that fall from my face. one of them offers me water. they don’t have any containers that are big enough for me, they apologize, so just this acorn cap filled with morning dew will have to suffice.

i take the acorn cap and look at it in my hands. it is so small now. with a sniff, i put it atop my head.

the gnome chuckles. then laughs. then bends at the waist, bellowing with laughter, supporting himself on my knee. then i am laughing too, face red, tears still falling, and my community of gnomes laughs with me as well, so loud that a flock of birds takes off in the distance, and i am still laughing even as i stand to my feet and lumber away, back to where i once came.

Dear friends and supporters,

I write to you with a heavy heart but also with hope. My name is Hala, a child from Gaza, born in 2010. I have witnessed all the wars in my city.

Now I live in a tent with my mother, brother and sister. We live in constant fear of death and miss our school days, my classmates, and my education.

I am sharing my story to get your support and help in my campaign to evacuate from Gaza so that I can live in peace and continue my education.

Please share this post with your friends, family, and anyone who can help.

Let's work together to achieve this simple dream of living a safe life and going back to school.

Thank you for your support and care.

with your donation, you can be the light that lights up my life and the life of my mother, brother and sister, and this small donation can make a big difference in our lives.

Hala

👍

Hello, I am Mohammad from Gaza. The war took my parents and siblings, and I can't bear the thought of losing my three children as well. Can you share my story and donate to help me keep my family safe? 🙏

👍

My family is still staying in half of the church that wasn’t affected by the bombing because there is nowhere else to stay other than tents. They are limited to one small meal a day and one shower a week. They are sleeping on the floors, but no one can sleep since there is bombing everywhere around them. Even when there is no bombing, they can still hear the loud buzzing sound of the military planes above them, which would keep anyone who hears it awake. Along with everything, My grandma has diabetes and osteoporosis, so she can’t walk. She has to take her insulin medication along with many others; however, she has run out of many of her medications.” Am on my knees requesting for donation. Target $450

Only a single day of posting history and a fundraiser link that’s a PayPal? I don’t trust this.

This Week on: Sonic The Hedgehog

Is no one gonna elaborate?

Short explanation: if Sonic’s clone is a girl it means that sonic could be afab

Long explanation:

In Sonic The Hedgehog 2 there was a glitch were Sonic’s palette would turn green and black, the fans named it evil sonic/ Ashura the hedgehog

Archie’s artist Ken Penders turned this concept into a character named Scourge The Hedgehog, aka anti-sonic; a sonic from a parallele universe, bizzarro style

He was a fan favorite but Penders wasnt really the best (Google Ken Penders lawsuits to check) and gived a lot of problems to Sega and in the end the Archie comics had to stop because of him, and now IDW pubblish sonic comics, and due how messy Archie sonic was, now Sonic Team has put a lot of rules of what the writers can or can not put in the comic.

Since they cant use Scourge anymore; IDW made a new character based on the green sonic glitch:

Surge the Tenrec; a clone of sonic made by Dr Starline! And since she is a clone and a girl; accidentally implies that sonic may be afab

Trans Sonic is real. Unleash the memes.

All my mutuals and followers should get to see this

trans sonic? on my dashboard! it’s more likely than you think

the beauty of tumblr’s retrochronological dash is that when you come back online, if the first post you see is “okay im normal now” you know you’re about to witness the most spectacular meltdown a mutual has ever had in recent memory, followed by the impetus that trigger the entire event

FWIW, “mauve” was one of the coal-tar dyes developed in the mid-19th century that made eye-wateringly bright clothing fashionable for a few decades.

It was an eye-popping magenta purple

Back view of the top half of an 1860s dress in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. It is extremely fussy and a uniform brilliant magenta purply-pink.ALT

HOWEVER, like most aniline dyes, it faded badly, to a washed-out blue-grey …

…which was the color ignorant youngsters in the 1920s associated with “mauve”.

(This dress is labeled “mauve” as it is the color the above becomes after fading).

1920s “Robe satin mauve”fashion plate. Her dress is a washed-out grey, barely on the purple side of neutral.ALT

They colored their vision of the past with washed-out pastels that were NOTHING like the eye-popping electric shades the mid-Victorians loved. This 1926 fashion history book by Paul di Giafferi paints a hugely distorted, I would say dishonest picture of the past.

Plate from the truly awful 1926 fashion history "The history of the feminine costume of the world” by Paul di Giafferi, showing a bunch of VERY badly drawn historic costumes in washed-out pastel tonesALT

Ever since then this faded bluish lavender and not the original electric eye-watering hot pink-purple is the color associated with the word “mauve”.

A 1920s fashion plate from “Chic Parisienne” showing a pale lavender-grey dress with a pink inset and undersleeves and beaded edgesALT

Oh! Just like the Victorians did to the Gothic, where actual Gothic cathedrals which had been built to be bright and full of light were portrayed as dark and gloomy places, because that’s what happens after a cathedral is filled with candles for several hundred years.

she really saw the Charli xcx album doing well in the UK and is just trying to rig the charts which is actually insane. I never want to see someone call Taylor Swift a feminist again. This is legitimately insane and she should be embarrassed. The fact that it’s a geo locked UK exclusive cements how deliberately pathetic this is, she genuinely hates seeing other women succeed.

Tags by 10001gecs that read "to explain to my less online followers taylor is releasing basically infinite alternate albums (ithink diff cover art and a few bonus tracks?) whenever another big album from a diff artist is abt to come out to compete on the charts and limit how well that other artist's album will chart which is dumb. and often it chokes their album out + has her take number 1 brat peaked at number 2 on the charts and taylors rerelease took number 1ALT

Tags stolen from @10001gecs hope you don’t mind but your explanation helped me a lot so I’m leaving it here to help more people understand what’s going on.

all of this is extremely annoying, and Swift working the charts like this is petty and irritating. but Charli xcx had the funniest possible response to this, which was to rerelease brat but with 3 extra songs on it so it’s a different album

screenshot of the album "Brat and it's the same but there's three extra songs so it's not" by Charli xcxALT

this is great because now I can listen to brat another ten billion times

Documenting what is quite possibly the best exchange I have ever seen on this website.

He will not be exiled again

I enjoy all parts of this post. The trans leash, the confusion, the heartfelt display of affection we give to our pets. The biography, the history lesson, and the morality of keeping cats indoors are all bonuses.

Hey thats me again.

Anyway guess whos 18 now!!!

THESIS: the real reason that people stay on this hellsite is not “chronological order” or “the drama” or whatever (per se), but is instead linked to how tumblr, unlike most social media, is not optimised to give content as short of a half-life as possible, but instead is optimised to let content continue to cycle for months, years, even decades. this has in turn led to a more consistent centralised site “culture” in which there is more coherent linkage among different areas of the site, thus also explaining why its content permeates so thoroughly throughout the internet.

i made a grindr and in under 24 hours i got the most insane unsolicited nude to ever exist. hes fully nude on the beach and in his right hand is a black tipped reef shark i could not make this shit up if i tried

artistic rendition

i fucking wish i had a way to prove this but a) passing around nudes is wrong even when its a 40 year old nudist shark freak and b) he unsent the messages bc my silence made him nervous ig. wish he was instead nervous about sharks around his panenis but im not his dad

btw another pic in the set he sent me was essentially the same photo but the shark was a fishing spear and his penis was erect this time. do you think he meant it as a metaphor thats kind of poignant symbolism

he looked almost regal in a florida man way

actually fuck do you guys think i ghosted Poseidon on grindr be honest its hurricane season and im on the gulf i mean did you SEE what that guy did to odysseus

I feel like Poseidon would have a better beard. It was probably one of his kids. So just don’t shout your name back to him as you sail away and you’ll be fine.
