My 11-year-old couldn’t decide what flavor of ramen to make, so I told her to flip a coin. Heads for spicy chicken, tails for beef.

Taking my advice, she flipped a penny, and when it landed on tails she said “Wait! Wait! I did it wrong!”

I told her that she did it right, because the real reason for flipping a coin isn’t to let fate decide for you, but because when the coin is in the air, you will suddenly realize what you wanted in the first place.

I’m sure there’s a life lesson there somewhere…

But honestly, I have never known her to pass up spicy chicken.

Update: Yesterday, her brother asked her if she wanted a corn dog and she couldn’t decide, so again I told her to flip a coin. She did so, and without even looking which way it landed, she snatched the penny up and said “I want a corn dog”.

My sister did this to me. I was dithering between sandwiches and she said “the club sandwich” and I went “no! The French dip!” and this advice also works on almost everything else. It’s scary.

fascinated by how “dislocate” seems to be a word used almost exclusively to refer to the misalignment of bodies, or parts of the body, from their proper place. it’s distinctly anatomical. you don’t say “i dislocated my keys” for instance, even though that’s technically a correct and coherent sentence.

on the other hand, it would be really funny to say “i misplaced my shoulder” to announce a devastating injury

it went that way 👉

A young man, Fahmi Akkila, has reached out to me and trusted me to share his story with you in the hopes that it will spark people to donate and help him get his family to safety.

He’d been a hard working man, newly engaged, doing his best to build a good life for himself, his family, and his soon-to-be bride. And the genocide has taken away everything he’s worked so hard to achieve, his new apartment, his car, his jobs. And he’s now forced to bear the responsibility of protecting his family during this crisis.

Below are videos of the destruction taken by Fahmi:

He is requesting €160,000, which will go to evacuating 7 people from Gaza into Egypt, as well as to living expenses. They have only reached €545 after months of trying to raise money. Please donate if you can, and share this post. Every bit will help Fahmi and his family evacuate and start to rebuild.

And there are so many reasons a kid might be quiet. I was quiet because I felt safer when I was quiet. Because I WAS BEING ABUSED. And I had to go through even more abuse at school because the teachers there wouldn’t lift a finger to stop it.

Flashback to the time my science teacher said, “If you don’t want to be bullied, don’t make yourself a target.”

Throwback to when my teacher said to me that i “basically chose to be bullied"💀

Do you know what the only thing that stopped the kids who bullied me when I was being bullied so badly I came home crying daily my entire fifth grade?

It wasn’t any of my mom’s suggestions, which were go to the teacher, go to the principal, just keep going to an adult because *surely* that will *eventually* help even though obviously it wasn’t and my life was turning into a living hell in the meantime while the authorities she put all her faith in did nothing and she didn’t lift a finger because she thought I needed to handle it on my own to learn *responsibility*. The teachers said either what this post did, or to just ignore them. Obviously none of that worked.

You know what did work?

One week when my mom was out of town, my dad was waiting by the bus stop for me. He drove his car over to some of the kids who had been picking on me, and scared the living daylight out of them by rolling down the window and asking them “so you think it’s funny to make little girls cry?” He didn’t *do* anything to them. Just scared the little shitheads so badly they hopefully never bullied anyone else ever again because they realized there would be fucking consequences.

My best friend and I didn’t have a single other issue the rest of the year. From anyone who had bullied us, not just that particular group. For the rest of the year we were left completely alone by people who had up until then tormented us every time the adults’ backs were turned.

So there you have it. Actual consequences and the fear of god (or a very angry father) are the only things that will stop bullies. Not ignoring them. And certainly not stoking their wrath more and then turning your back on them in the hopes they’ll go ‘pick on someone else’.

smh the only way to actually not get in trouble is to fuckin zip it?? i was in a fairly abusive relationship with my family and a friend at the time, and i was so mentally drained of doing anything. the "friend” was toxic and would manipulate me into just doing everything for her and that i was so important but was also worthless at the same time. i also had multiple instances of when i just got so fuckiin depressd id go to the counselling my school offers.

and that was fucking horrible. my dad was called in several times, about once every two months. because the school didnt care that there was a 13 year old crying and yelling over and over “please dont call him he’ll kill me i’ll do anything just please”. imagine a child begging for their life and swearing on their bloodline and all you say is “oh but we need to communicate this to your parents and i like calling rather than text”.

like excuse me? wtf are you tryna prove here? clearly not the point that im safe at school.

god.

schools suck and the justice system’s corrupt.

“As a chemical engineering Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh who uses a power wheelchair, I figured it wouldn’t be long before I met one of these bots in a frustrating face-off on a narrow sidewalk. What I didn’t realize was how dangerous, and dehumanizing, that scenario might be.

The robot was sitting motionless on the curb cut on the other side of Forbes Avenue. It wasn’t crossing with the rest of the pedestrians, and when I reached the curb, it didn’t move as the walk signal was ending. I found myself sitting in the street as the traffic light turned green, blocked by a non-sentient being incapable of understanding the consequences of its actions.”

-Emily Ackerman

The article: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-19/why-tech-needs-more-designers-with-disabilities

Two paragraphs I really liked:

Now, thanks to the presence of these new delivery robots, the regular walk to my office has earned a spot on my ever-growing “Things to Worry About Daily” list. But don’t mistake this story for a protest against a singular company, or a warning about our possible autonomous future. In fact, the disabled community as a whole could greatly benefit from a delivery service for food or medicine.

"Instead, my experience is representative of a much larger, evolving problem. The advancement of robotics, AI, and other “futuristic” technologies has ushered in a new era in the ongoing struggle for representation of people with disabilities in large-scale decision-making settings. These technologies come with their own set of ethical design challenges, with more unknown consequences than ever before. And we have yet to have an honest, critical conversation about it.”

Bloomberg headline: The fast rise of prescriptions for Adderall and other stimulants suggest the start of another drug crisis like the opioid epidemic, according to the DEAALT

I fucking knew it, I SAID it: they’re making ADHD people the next culture war targets. They will ‘just ask questions’ until we lose every scrap of ground we’ve gained in the last decade and more. We may not quite inspire the same level of hatred as a sexual minority, but we can very easily be made to inspire disdain and that also works.

They will strip us of our accomodations and our medications and try to stifle any sense of shared identity, and if that kills some of us, oh well. So long as it fuels another outrage cycle, fine.

So many of the tropes they’ve been using on trans people work extremely well on ADHD people too! “There are too many of these people suddenly! It must be a fad! It spreads through friend groups! And online! People are going private for diagnoses and that’s bad! They are using pOwERfUl medical interventions and we think it’s freaky!”

I saw the first ripples of this in terf circles about two years ago. And of course it’s spread.

6% of British ADHD people lost their jobs in the last year thanks to the meds shortage. SIX PER CENT! And that just made these ghouls go “ooh, tasty, what else can we do?”

Recently an 'expert’ was on the BBC saying people see ADHD diagnosis as a “golden ticket.” Laurence Fox has been ranting that the condition doesn’t exist and threatening “'you won’t poison my child’s body [with ADHD meds] against my consent”

People need to be aware this is going to get worse. Maybe, if we’re lucky, it won’t get really bad. But it’s going to get worse than it is now.

I really need everyone, no matter where you are on the political spectrum you are on, to understand one thing:

What happens to the most marginalised in society will eventually happen to all of us who aren’t part of the ruling class!

Please get this through your head! Obscenely wealthy and power people do not care about you! Do not making the mistake of assuming they see you as human, they absolutely fucking don’t. Like I am begging you all to use your damn brains and stop falling for this divide and conquer shit!

For anyone who thinks: None of these people in power could actually believe any of this is sustainable… right? Then you’re incorrect, they absolutely do believe that because these people are addicted to greed, they are incapable of thinking rationally. They simply do not give a single shit what destruction happens so long as it doesn’t affect them! And it does not help at all that most of society has been letting this shit happen to those they were told were “beneath” them for fucking decades! The lack of action and even the vocal or monetary support of their actions fucking told them that this shit is okay! That it won’t piss people off enough to affect their power or their bottom line!

Conservatism and far right political ideology doesn’t just stop and go “oh no, you’re part of the Good Group, don’t worry, this won’t affect you! You’re special!” No! That’s not remotely how this shit works! Instead these people simply go: “okay, we’re gonna test this horrible thing on that group, because we tricked everyone into hating them, they’re the scapegoats, and we’ll convince the other people that they’re going to eventually benefit from this!” And then they keep pushing that boundary until they work it into everything and everyone else until we’re all so powerless that we’re unable to stop the progression!

And this bullshit with adhd meds is a perfect example of this phenomenon! Today people are demonising “junkies” who rely on dangerously addictive substances to simply remain alive because that’s the only option they have. Tomorrow your colleague with adhd or narcolepsy who relies on taking stimulants in order to safely and effectively do their job can’t get their meds anymore that they need to literally function. They now have no choice but to self medicate via illegal and dangerous means or watch their entire life fall apart and be blamed for it.

And it’s not like they can go on disability because society let the same thing happen to disability benefits and unemployment thinking it wouldn’t affect them! What a horrible massive chain reaction!

Black activists during the Jim Crow era in the US had a saying (and black activists still do): “If you can convince the poorest white man that he’s better than the richest black man, then he won’t notice you picking his pocket.” I really need people to remember this and keep it in mind before they start fighting with people in their own socioeconomic class.

I just… I’m so tired and angry and I barely talk about stuff like this despite really caring about it because each day that goes by it feels more and more impossible to get through to these people. The things leftists fight for are things that will at some point personally benefit you and the people you know! Trying to get people to understand this is like talking to a solid concrete block! What about that is not clicking for you exactly? Like… how am I supposed to tell these bastards that they’re supposed to care about people other than themselves?

I have ADHD and I’m very worried that I won’t be able to afford medication soon. In the past few months the price of my ADHD meds in the United States has spiked dramatically. It used to cost me between 20-60 dollars. Now it costs hundreds of dollars even with insurance. Furthermore, it is taking longer for my pharmacy to refill my prescriptions. The last time I needed my meds refilled I had to wait TWO WEEKS between putting in the request and actually getting my meds, all while trying to prep for exams (which was impossible without them). I am not optimistic about how I’ll be treated because of my disability in the future.

fundamental problem is this idea of bandcamp as a platform you use, instead of switching from spotify to Owning Music. you can just download music. you can have all ur mp3s and use whatever music app you want. you could be getting your music from bandcamp or itch or soulseek or redacted.ch it doesn’t matter. music isn’t just some app you use. centering bandcamp as Freeing Music or thinking about things in those terms is a fundamental misunderstanding of the good that bandcamp was doing, and will lead to the exact same problems spotify is causing. by far the biggest problem musicians face is that bandcamp is one of the only remaining fair ways to sell music; we need more places, not one solitary “better” place.

very hard to find sources on the subject but ive always been fairly interested in the neuroendocrinological and psychological aspects of medical transition beyond how it alleviates/reduces dysphoria related symptoms. its a shame that most studies seem to have a preoccupation with testosterone as a catalyst for aggression, i suppose because they are usually focusing on cis men, and all prior literature does the same. its anecdotal but i have observed in myself and some others, a reduction in social anxiety, mood swings, executive dysfunction, etc as a result of hrt. im personally prone to going of for a week or so if im lazy regarding refills, and in the past ive been off for months at a time, so i have developed an acute awareness of how t affects my mental state (consistently for the better). it is also interesting to consider why this would be, as its not the alleviation of dysphoria but something far more fundamental. why would my psyche benefit from something that from a natural standpoint im very much not supposed to have (at those levels)? would a cis woman who suffers from those aforementioned mental issues benefit in the same way if the physical effects of T were magically excluded, or is there some inherent neurological difference in trans men that makes us crosswired, so to speak?

Trans Zuko is so funny to me. I’m not saying this to try and make fun of people who headcanon him as trans - trans headcanons are great and I support them. It’s just wild because it implies Ozai was out here like:

image

[Image description: a white woman with blonde hair is saying:

‘I can excuse burning a kid’s face, but I draw the line at misgendering’.

The words ‘burning a kid’s face’ and ‘misgendering’ have been edited in.

End description]

Possible explanations I just pulled out of my arse:

  • Being trans is very normalised in the Fire Nation and misgendering is considered dishonourable and makes you Look Really Bad.
  • Zuko’s transition was convenient because Ozai wanted a male heir.
  • Zuko went to the Mother of Faces or whatever the spirit was called to get a new (male) face and body and part of the magic was that his family would only remember the new him.
  • Ursa allowed Zuko to transition when he was very young and Ozai just straight up forgot that he used to be a ‘girl’ because he pays no attention to his family.

Trans rights not children’s rights

That last one tho.

Ozai over here frowning as Ursa calmly presents him with Zuko and Azula one day all like “I thought I had two daughters but I don’t know enough about my children to dispute it.”

That last one… that’s the one.
