love how the ming dynasty has a long series of really competent and hardworking and idealistic emperors who each get on the throne and go i’m going to be the best emperor ever, unlike my good-for-nothing predecessor who let the bureaucrats make all the decisions while he sat back and worked in his hobbies! and then they realize that the squabbling confucian bureaucracy has gridlocked the government so badly that the emperor couldn’t make any decisions even if he wanted to and they’re like ohhhh i get it now

i’ve seen people use the word “childish” to describe the zhengde emperor’s marie antoinette thing where he made all his ministers and eunuchs cosplay normal people in a fake marketplace with him, but honestly i think he was onto something. pretend with me for a minute that the most important thing in the world is not which faction’s interpretation of an eight word phrase in the analects is correct, but rather whether or not you can sell enough beancurd to make rent. sixteenth century touch grass

I hate so much that professors who still can’t figure out how to send messages on Zoom think they’re capable of spotting AI writing. Professors are just feeding essays into AI detectors with massive fail rates with absolutely zero critical thought about the tools they’re using. I moved across state lines. I’ve spent years of my life trying to get this degree. But at any moment I could be expelled because I got a false positive from a detector that tells you ChatGPT wrote Anna Karenina.

#I Kinda feel like there must be more scrutiny to this to ensure student safety from being wrongfully accused without definitive proof

My friend was placed on academic probation because their essay tripped the automated AI detectors. His probation only lasted until the humans in the community standards office made time to manually review his essay – that wound up being sixteen whole days.

There’s a scholarship for our school’s study abroad program, but you can’t apply if you’re on probation. And there’s a strict deadline. My friend wasn’t able to apply, even though he would have been perfect for the program, because the mindless program started beeping, and the humans in charge didn’t care enough to come check until after the scholarship deadline had already passed. He can’t afford to go on his own. This likely means he won’t be able to attend classes during the summer even domestically, which means he won’t earn credits during those three months. That pushes back his graduation timeline by a whole semester. I cannot stress enough that these crazy arbitrary braindead-version-of-HAL “detectors” are wreaking havoc with real people’s lives.

re: that last post, ive said it before and ill say it again: no one deserves to die (deserving is fake and death is bad) but some people need to be stopped and choose to make death the only way to stop them

I disagree. Pedophiles 100% deserve death.

you are moralizing and weaponizing your disgust in order to construct and justify a category of person you’re allowed to murder

what do you think you deserve for this?

Sorry, no person deserves to die, thankfully child molesters and pedophiles aren’t human, so this doesnt apply to them.

denying the humanity of people who do horrible things accomplishes exactly three things:

  1. give cover to people who haven’t been caught yet by allowing them to use their humanity as “proof” of their innocence
  2. silence any criticism of societal structures and institutions that facilitate those horrible things by putting the focus on individuals who are assumed to be so uniquely monstrous that the ways it was made easy for them are irrelevant
  3. provide a shortcut to dehumanize anyone you feel like killing: simply accuse them of doing a horrible thing

3.a. if you’ve already established that only an inhuman monster could kill a child, then all you have to do to get people to burn down the jewish quarter is say that jews kidnap christian children to bathe in their blood

3.b. if you’ve already established that only an inhuman monster could commit rape, then all you have to do to get people to string up a black man you don’t like is find a white woman who’s willing to point at him while she cries and babbles

3.c. if you’ve already established that only an inhuman monster could molest a child, then all you have to do to get people to drag gay people behind their trucks is say that since gay people can’t have babies, the only way they can make more gay people is by following a nefarious Agenda to “convert” children by molesting them

3.c.a. meanwhile if you try to address the rampant sexual assault of catholic altar boys, you’re met with “don’t be ridiculous, he’s a priest!” (see #1) and with assertions that even if it does happen sometimes, those priests are just infiltrators who don’t represent the church and there’s no reason to make sure priests and altar boys are never alone together (see #2)

tl;dr: your disgust-based violent politics are not less reactionary than any run-of-the-mill homophobe or racist’s disgust-based violent politics

I realized how bad of a take this was after I added my last bit, i apologize for the idiocy i portrayed in my half thought out statements. And I appreciate the way you rebutted this with reasonable statements rather than going hog wild because I said something you didnt agree with.

hey no worries. we’ve all been there, and anyone who says they havent is either 11 or afraid of their social circle

I hate when an artist gets exposed for being a bad person and people start the narrative “why would you even want to listen to their shitty music” when are we going to be freed from the idea that only good people create good art and bad people create bad art. It just makes it harder for these types of people to be exposed because now you got people thinking “how is this possible, his music is so good!”

more controversial (for tumblr at least) addition to this - the argument that “people should have known based on the subject matter of the songs” is also extremely unhelpful. Songs can be fictional and cathartic depictions of bad emotions or thoughts and I don’t think they should be used as evidence that someone is bad. If that subject matter makes you uncomfortable especially given hindsight that’s one thing, but I don’t think that should be confused with “evidence” or a sign “people should have known”. I think this line of thinking just ensures artists are going to make much more boring music

good GOD I am so angry.

I, as my bio suggests, am a minor. I am also asexual. And feeling quite dysphoric about all the adults in my life telling me ‘I wouldn’t know until I’ve tried it.’ But that’s a different topic.

I needed a little boost for myself so I looked at the asexual tag here on tumblr, so I’d feel less alone.

There are always thirst traps and other things of that kind on any popular tag. But I saw so many, on the asexual tag, that I actually cried, ripping my skin off as I did so.

There will always be people that abuse the tag system, I know. Tagging your posts with trending tags to make them more likely to show up on people’s dashes is a corporate tactic. But to see so many of these ads, I can barely call them posts, on the asexual tag, made me physically ill.

Asexuality is often overlooked by not just cishets but the LGBTQ+ community so often. To see that a safe space for positivity for such a overlooked community was being vandalised for the sake of marketing makes me so angry and so upset for myself and all the other people who fit under the umbrella of asexuality or aromantic who just want to feel like they belong.

I’m a relatively new blog, but I know how tumblr works. I know how the world works. The way the world is run means that we are all victims, and I thought that maybe society, that damned, twisted thing, could let us have a little corner to protect ourselves.

All it does is hurt. it hurts, and it hurts, and it hurts. Companies aren’t going to get new customers by ripping apart supposed safe spaces, and young asexual kids like myself aren’t going to get any validation or even feeling of home from seeing thirst traps targeted toward our community.

our community that is SPECIFICALLY DEFINED BY FEELING DIFFERENT OR NO SEXUAL ATTRACTION TO WHAT IS DEEMED ‘NORMAL’.

it’s targeted. I can tell. And I am by no means an expert, but this tag abuse is hurting everyone. And no one is doing a thing about it.

please boost this. Reblog, like, whatever. This is damaging people far more than you think, and it needs to be resolved.

thanks for hearing me

hi I’m from your pseudo-medieval fantasy city. yeah. you forgot to put farms around us. we have very impressive walls and stuff but everyone here is starving. the hero showed up here as part of his quest and we killed and ate him

yeah umm actually everyone kinda lives, inside.. the walls yeah. no yeah theres not any surrounding farming communities or villages to levy taxes from so we’re pretty much just in a stone pit all together. Theres a massive stone castle tho! where did the infrastructure for the stone quarring come from? I dont know… Evil wizard maybe?

If you actually want to know how medieval (and overall pre-industrial) cities interacted with its rural enviroment, check out these articles:

Long story short, cities weren’t islands in the middle of nowhere. If you’re a generic fantasy character approaching a city, you wouldn’t find a lonely Shining City Upon A Hill (hmm, interesting imagery there, wonder what it means…), but actually a highly populated area of farms, orchards and all that feeds and maintains a city.

Ya, hey, hi. We are from the fantasy pit and just wanted to tell you that magic doesn’t actually exist. Ya, nether do wizards. It seems like your not even writing a factual accounting of history but rather fiction or something.

blocking this idiot but by god you people are fucking annoying. we can’t say anything about fiction ever because it’s not real. anyway here’s my fantasy story where you piss your pants and fall off a cliff and die. badly

You people will just say anything you want about Korea, North or South.

Before I scuttle off, though, please ask yourself why articles like these that talk about birthrate or lack of 1st graders or whatever in South Korea almost never discusses the fact that recently, the far-right capitalist regime has made it even harder for couples to afford kids, or historically, the fact that the decline in birthrate being sharp coincides with far-right regime at enforcing lower birthrate + “democratic” regime’s neoliberalization in social welfare policies after the 1997 Asian financial collapse. It’s almost as if critique of capitalism and its tangible harmful impact on human lives is impossible to conceive of (no pun intended) for these people. Women aren’t “withholding reproductive labor,” yankee reading this from their shitty suburban dwelling. People can’t afford to see a gynecologist because the far-right regime modeled its social welfare policies after the USA’s social welfare policies.

I thought I was done with this post (and this addition probably won’t spread), but I wanted add one more thing that bothered me about the Other Post.

This isn’t even the age that kids start school in South Korea. If Korean cis women really did do this since 2019, the kids that enter first grade would be….

2-3 years under the age that they normally enter kindergarten (kids do not just pop out of the woman right after sex! You’d have to account for the 8-9 months of pregnancy!). So now, we have to look at what happened 8-9 years ago. So what did happen 8-9 years ago?

THAT’S RIGHT! IT’S ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT LABOR! Park Geun-hye’s awful far-right regime has made it impossible for Korean youth to even survive, let alone think about kids 9 years ago! Did you know that if you’re working 60+ hrs a week because you lost your benefits in your “contractor” job, you tend to stop having sex (or any other leisure life)? It’s always been about capitalism and its impact on human lives! Pretenidng otherwise is literally letting the capitalists hijack the narrative about their failure with flashy “causes” that do not line up! Reject any “analysis” that ignore the actual, tangible material causes to the phenomena in favor of sensationalism! It’s like a key dangling in front of your face!

Well shit, Henry Jenkins, out here in 1997 dropping truth bombs

Oh hey I need this for a research paper I’m writing, thank you!

i mean he had been out here since 1988 dropping such bombs:

“‘fandom’ is a vehicle of marginalized subcultural groups (women, the young, gays, etc.) to pry open space for their cultural concerns within dominant representations; it is a way of appropriating media texts and rereading them in a way that serves different interests, a way of transforming mass culture into a popular culture”

Jenkins, Henry. “Star Trek Rerun, Reread, Rewritten: Fan Writing as Textual Poaching.” Critical Studies in Mass Communication 5, no. 2 (1988): 85–107. https://doi.org/10.1080/15295038809366691.

there are even some earlier works in fan studies but that’s what i have ready to hand.

Henry’s been amazing for a long time.
